Matchmaking once again

I just wanted to know if you have any news on the MM system on consoles. Also on OC there was a massive growth in players which went from 200 to 600 off peak an came up to 2k on weekend peak.

I also like to ask again that you implement a really simple thing (based on CR) even if this is no indicator of absolute skill but it is an indicator of dedication to the game which is the most important in keeping people on the game. A CR100 will probably not quit the game because of a few stomps even if he doesn’t like it while a CR5 is much more likely to throw the towel once he loses his 5 first PVP matches without having any chance at winning.
This idea is exactly why I ask you to split the beginners (CR1-CR25 numbers may vary) from the rest of the players. I know this will divide the “small” community at first but I am nearly sure that the community would benefit from it in the longer run because new players will get to like the game more and will stick around longer. Also from my personal experience this would also benefit the higher CR players because they would not get matched with low levels against good teams making it even harder to stand a chance.

I know this has already been asked but with all the new people you got to play your great game it is really sad to see so many leave because so many matches end in stomps for new players.

I know this will not solve every problem but I really think this should be done before the most new players who got the game leave again, for PC this might already come too late as I see the numbers on steam already go down again but better late than never. This also seems like an easy fix (perhaps even possible as hotfix) so please consider trying it (like you tired the competitive que and casual que).

At least we could see during 1 week if it changes anything or not

There are two problems at hand here:

  1. Matchmaking isn’t always great.
  2. Not enough players play for matchmaking to be accurate.

Gearbox did add competitive/ranked play to Battleborn a couple weeks after launch and it worked great for me. However, there was a big problem: queue times were abysmal. I’d have to wait 15-20mins minimum to find a match consistently. The system spread players very thin but it did actually solve the problem of being matched against players of similar skill.

Ranked play is no more simply because the player-base required to find a decent match for each of the 10 players in a game would need to be larger. The smaller your player-base, the more limited your matchmaking is as there are less “ideal” opponents to choose from.

At the time of speaking, matchmaking works okay for me and I’ve not really been in the situation where I feel I’m playing against opponents of higher skill. I do find myself playing with a lot of new low level players though which I can see being a problem for new-comers to the game. As everyone did eventually find out, matchmaking is based on your ELO (your actual player skill level) not overall level.

I think new players should definitely be separated from higher level players as it’s quite easy to get overwhelmed from people that have been playing since launch!

To put it short this is exactly what my idea/suggestion is. Separate the CR1-CR25 from the rest

As long as it doesn’t go F2P (smufs would exploit), would giving low CR players a base DR and/or damage buff create enough of a handicap to help? Have it drop off once they reach a certain CR? No one is going to keep buying a new copy of the game to get the bonus in a PUG.

I feel like I’ve seen other games do this.

I’ve had at least two games this week where there were a couple of CR3 players on the other team who were in no way beginners. They obviously knew the game inside and out, and were very good at it. I think that all you really need to do is get a new PSN account to reset your CR, and this is what they did.

Ah, I’m thinking PC…i keep forgetting this is on the consoles too. Sorry, gaming brethren!

The clearest issues for console players right now (Xbox One player) is that the playerbase is too low for quick MM or even balanced based on command rank.

In the last two weeks with Battleborn being in the bargain bucket sales of most online retailers (in UK anyway) there has been an influx of new players but during MM to be teamed with sub 10 ranked players when you are 100 and then match made against a full team of 100’s, only two things will happen: 1) low players quit 2) low players call surrender.

I have also noticed that EU region has now merged with the US region pool of players to try and build the playerbase numbers for MM, this has caused laggy games, red bar connections but understand why.

So basically the truth is on Console and PC platforms, the player numbers are desperately low to sustain optimal matchmaking…only the hardcore and those picking it up cheap are playing.

Can’t blame them, I picked it up for cheap on PC and the PvP is unplayable due to the seeming endless groups of lvl 100’s stomping anyone not playing with 4 friends who know the game. 10-15 min que just so that you can play 15 minutes of dying and watching your stuff get destroyed. Try and grit your teeth and just finish the match? New players will leave, and it’ll be even more uneven. Im lvl 55 due to PvE with my attempts at PvP, and I imagine ill never get to 100. There is no draw to play against other players, plus I can only learn so much through 0-100 matches. The game will go F2P withing a year probably, but once I get sick of playing the same missions over and over i’ll leave like the majority of people who tried the game (without the 60.00 dollar pricetag) and got sick of being destroyed.

I am honestly tired of playing with lvl 5’s that are now lvl 30-50.

Doesn’t stop me from stealing wins when I shouldn’t with Whiskey.:sunglasses:

Maybe it’s just the string of bad luck I ran into last night talking – I ended up on the wrong end of some REALLY imbalanced matches – but they do need to refine the balance of PvP Matchmaking.

You’ve got to have some noteworthy emotional fortitude (or a lot of great instincts honed from other PvP FPS) to wade into PvP these days.

As for these bad matches, from a pure CR standpoint, I had a run where it was 450-500 total CR vs. 150-200 total CR (and I was supplying 100 of that.) I recognize that CR doesn’t work beyond a GENERAL representation of experience, because of guys who are primarily PvE players.

I’m definitely in that category, and I wreck pretty hard on Story. I do… OK in PvP. I can think of only a few matches where I’d award myself MVP for our team, but I also don’t have a lot of experiences where I didn’t contribute anything and was the weakest link.

something seriously needs to be done with match making or were going to lose all the new people from fustration.

Lately i only have 2 types of games.
Either its too easy and we floorstomp, or its impossible and we get end up surrendering / leaving.

and LVL100 premades, or a full team of LVL100 should NEVER be pitted against a team full of lvl2-10’s.

Thats just asking for the low levels never to come back to this game.

On the PC, the population isn’t high enough to support pre-formed teams; therefore, just get rid of large pre-forms.

Have 10 players join a map lobby, and then balance teams every map according to the player levels.

An exception could be made in the case of 2-person pre-forms for real life friends who want to play on the same team, but not 4 or 5 person pre-forms.

I’ve just had such a match, a complete premade team of lvl 100 vs my PUG. Average Level… maybe 25 and that was only because one of us was level 100 while the others were between 2 and 25.

There is no excuse to matches like these… it’s annoying, time consuming and frustrating.

Pretty much my experience of the majority of matches I’ve had over the weekend - with being steamrolled being the common result.

Any new players I’ve played with either went AFK after being consistently destroyed 3-4 v 1 or simply just disconnected before the surrender option were available.

I’ve actually been cancelling out of teams with more than one other 75 CR plus player on it and trying to help out teams of lower levels.

My last 5 matches of tonight were with myself and 2 35’s and 2 mid 50’s and we had amazing team synergy and composition and we won 5 matches in a row.

It was me as Montana, a Toby, a Thorn, an Oscar Mike, and a Caldarius.
