Matthew Armstrong leaves Gearbox

There’s still thousands of fans. There’s also other games people like to play. Nobody is going play only one game their whole life, not even borderlands, but they can still be fans without playing it all the time.

A part of Voltron just left the team. This is troubling.

Calm down people. Yes this is sad news, but don’t jump to the conclusion that “everyone is leaving, this looks bad for the franchise” People leave all the time…and people get hired to replace them. If they found talented people like Burch, Helquist and Armstrong, they can find other talented people again. You hear about them when they leave because by then you know them, but you never hear about then when they come in.

They could have already just hired someone that, when he leaves, will spawn one of those threads…
Someone who will make you say “Gee, that new fellow in charge is much better than the previous one”

Not only that, but having a successful franchise like Borderlands tends to attract people who DESPERATELY want to work on it… think these people might have a bit of passion for the game ?
Think they’ll have trouble picking the talented ones from among them ?

I’m not worried in the slightest

I wish Mr Armstrong the best in his new endeavors, and best of luck to Gearbox to replace him.

Burch, Paul, Armstrong. :sob:

Thats when its time to reinvent what youve done, push the envelope of whats been done BL3 is a great opportunity to expound on both TPS and BL2, not jump ship when the franchise is on the verge of reaching a new pinnacle for what it can do on next gen consoles and pc.

All it was for me Chuck was thinking of preserving the franchise I have grown to love, thats all there is to it for me in a nutshell. Borderlands is why I got back into fps again…

Unfortunately there are so many signs that Borderlands brand is in trouble. The fans who actually came on board with BL:TPS are leaving fast and Claptastic Voyage did nothing to stop this exodus. Day one game stats for BL2 on steam put it at twice that of BL:TPS (for it’s day one stats) and it has been able to maintain decent daily number from 2012 til today. Day one for BL:TPS it was about 3 times the number of daily players than BL2 within 1.5 months the number for BL:TPS dropped below that of BL2 which (a game which has been out for several years), and while this number rose with minor significance when Claptastic Voyage came out but in a few weeks had returned to the decline. A game with replay value should not be losing players this fast. I can imagine Gearbox are worried and probably should be, the same audience that played Borderlands is their most likely audience for Battleborn and these people are wary what to expect.

I don’t think Gearbox have been listening to these forums hard enough because the main issue with BL2 and BL:TPS is they are too hard for the average player and not rewarding enough. Average players are dropping out of the game too early out of frustration, tedious bullet-sponge grinding and slow progress gaining XP. Some fans have commented well do you think we should just make it easier like the first Borderlands game which made gear accessible everywhere and that lasted for long time … YES! If you want to make money make games for the bulk of the people so you can keep them interested in buying more. There are many other factors that need improving but they really need to address this issue first in order to attract and retain a decent fan base.

Except that Matt Armstrong was the actual creator of borderlands. He made borderlands what it was and is.

That means BL3 has high chances of being different, which is far from being a bad thing.
Considering the amount of fans the franchise has, I don’t think whoever is going to take the lead is going to mess with what’s worked so far.

Think of it as someone new who will bring fresh ideas.
And in the case BL3 fails, well, one can still delete BL1/BL2 saves and start again

And George Lucas made Star Wars what it was and is…but that doesn’t mean that he’s automatically the best person to carry on that legacy. There are more cool things in JJ Abrams’s new movie’s trailer than in the whole episode 1 movie. (If anything, the new movie feels closer to what I love of star wars than the last 3 did)

Not comparing the 2 guys, but Borderlands has been created, it can grow from there and there is no absolute need for the creative hand to do everything from here on.

I disagree: I hadn’t played an FPS in years before Borderlands 2, and not looking at my own feet was a challenge early on, but I never felt that the game was too hard, nor did I hear regular complaining to that effect here. There are reasons why the games doesn’t sell as well as hoped, but difficulty is not it.

Haha I just thought of Star Wars too. It’s looking really good. No reason to worry yet.

And bl2 is fine for casual play, I’m pretty casual and I love it.
Ugh that reads bad…Im on my phone but Im trying to say I agree with you. Lol

Paul Hellquist, Anthony Burch, 2kAus, Matt Armstrong…I wonder…
Future borderlands games will be different, in any case

I have to agree with Chuck. I just don’t think this is anything but normal in the gaming industry as a whole. It is a highly creative and competitive industry and just imagine if you have been working on the same project for five or six years he would have to be a little bored or burned out or ready to move on.

He is using his success to capitalize on something different for him and his family and who can blame him for that.

And there’s always hungry talented people waiting in the wings for their chance. It’s just the natural order of things.

One thing I learned in the army was there is always an individual who is ready and wants to step up. And usually they do as well or even better then the person they replaced.

It was a little bit of a shocker, but also heartening to see that as an example one day when I walked into my unit I commanded and declared that the entire upper levels of the chain of command have been killed by a bombing attack while at a strategy planning meeting. This was all simulated of course. I then walked out of the tent and said “continue the mission without these people.”

My men blinked and the young sergeant who is now going to wind up a captain swore, but then took over and did a superb job, as did his ad hoc chain of command for the rest of the exercise.

Point of the story is that there’s always great talent out there just waiting for their chance.

OBTW… That same young sergeant retired a few years ago a highly decorated Command Sergeant Major.

no Matt Armstrong,Paul Hellquist or Anthony Burch things are looking really grim for Borderlands 3 haven’t lost hope though I hope they make more like BL1 than 2 though at least loot system wise no gun ruining manufacturer gimmicks Gearbox pls

So many people have left Gearbox and 2K after Borderlands 3 was announced, this getting scary, Borderlands 3’s future is looking grim.

I’m not going to lie. This, the other recent departures and the closing of 2K Australia has me worried. It would be nice to hear something reassuring from Randy or someone about the future of Borderlands.

They may fine new people, but the people who left were born in borderlands. They new people may know a lot about borderlands, will never make BL3 how it could be. Hope they pick the right people.

Borderlands, R.I.P. I will cherish what I have of you, and remember you fondly, PreSequel, no big lose. My thoughts, too many changes in this Franchise anymore, I feel its headed in wrong direction now, might be something new, who knows, could be reason why we don’t have any patches out yet, and lack of responses, there are some comments now and then
