Matthew Armstrong leaves Gearbox

Love this attitude, Chuck. I was beginning to become quite worried with all of these changes, but you really put things into a good perspective. As BL has progressed through different releases, I am sure there have been some notable changes that we have not known about as well. While these latest changes do not seem positive on the surface, something amazing could come of it. How many times have you all started a new job, having to prove you were better than the person you replaced? I know I have, and it just served as motivation to be better.

Take Fallout as an example.

Fans of Fallout 1 and 2 waited 10 years, then finally got a sequel. Not the same people working on it, but they were fans of the series. It turned out great.

If 10 years can pass and the entire staff change and we can still get a great game, surely a couple of guys leaving and a couple of years is no indication of problems to come.

(Not going into great detail)

Depends who you ask. After I played 1 and 2, I couldn’t stand 3. Look at the No Mutants Allowed forums, one of the oldest Fallout fan forums, most of them hate 3. Might be the same here. Maybe BL3 will bomb, maybe it will be the bomb, who knows.

All the same I still feel with all the change, in what I thought was suppose to be a MASSIVE undertaking with BL3, theyve let people go instead of increasing their numbers. Yes I feel with all these “key” people that made borderlands what it is disappearing something dont feel right I do still concur with my previous statement and others who have said so as well, SOME statement from GBX as to what is going on within its offices would quell a lot of anxiety already trying to build up, just by recent comments on this page alone let alone what people think outside of here.

First, they don’t “let” people go :stuck_out_tongue: it’s a free country and no one is chained to their desk.

And second, how would we know ? Maybe there are more people working on BL3 now that there were before. All that we know is that one of the guys who was there isn’t there anymore, but we have no clue as to how many unknown (yet) people have been hired before or since. Maybe there are 15-50 more people than before.

I just dont agree with anything you wrote

The people stepping in for those that have left have big shoes to fill. Hellquist was a big loss, now the creative director, add the lead story writer - a lot of project leads and knowledge have left the building.
Best of luck to Matt and those filling those vacated roles.

And that’s entirely your choice.

I never said anyone was “chained” to their desk. Whether by the person moving on or being terminated from their job, as in any job that you work for, when you have a strong team and that person is no longer present that lack is noticed by all. Trust me I work at a job where everyday someone can be sick, quit, or whatever and the effect of it is noticed. I myself wish Matt well, just will do my best to be optimistic through any changes…

Lots of tension in here, some think there are problems a brewing and others say everythings fine. No matter what your opinion, keep it civil and not personal. It is after all just a discussion.

I wish Matt all the best and i am not worried at all. Just read through Borderlands 2 'credits: in the personal comments one can read a dozen of times “yeah first game” or “finally got my dream job”. What i want to say: as long as the team is good and the upper heads are competent and feel and live what they do, as long as they are passionate about the franchise, i’m not worried at all, because it will turn out to be good in the end.

Actually, it might be a very bad thing. Games with strong multiplayer components are going the MMO route, and sometimes even (gasp!) the “free”-to-play route. Both are unacceptable to me. If Borderlands goes off the reservation that way, I won’t be there.

All these personnel losses are distressing. It’s more than one or two random losses. It seems to be a systemic issue now.

I don’t find that distressing. Somehow I understand the feeling of wanting to do something different after spending many years working on the same games.
There’s probably no challenges at all doing a 3rd installation for them. And that’s also (probably) the best time to leave the company as BL3’s production hasn’t started yet, I suppose.

F2P isn’t necessarily a bad thing, if the shop only sells cosmetic stuff and “not pay-to-win” or “pay-to-win-faster” items.
Something that doesn’t happen often I agree. And I’m not very happy with Rockstar selling in-game money for real $$$.
I’d be worried if BL3 was to be a MMO. But that’s something that can happen even if the staff remains the same.
New blood on the team doesn’t annoy me at all.

Not to mention you haven’t paid for it so. Let’s be optimistic. It’ll be a while until we see something anyway. No reasons to have concerns, yet.

Have to agree with you on your MMO point.
Plus, games are heading towards online multiplayer exclusive (including GBX games eg Battleborn). It’s getting to the point where I won’t bother to upgrade to current gen console (X1/PS4) as there won’t be enough games to play as i play offline only. Plus the size of the games is getting ridiculous. Try downloading the updates on a slow connection. Not everyone is blessed with fast internet.

So true about the internet issues. I used to have none, and now I have NBN. I used to hate anything online. Now I wouldn’t be upset at all if BL3 took some cues from Destiny.

Unfortunately, Australia will not be catching up to the rest of the world in the internet stakes until Mr Abbott is histroy. And at the moment, there’s only a brown paper bag to replace him with (Shorten, that is).

My connection download speed is 400kb/sec - try downloading a 30 to 40 gb game on that

It was bad enough DL the whole thing on 25mb/sec!

Our internet sucks. Fact. NBN wireless is billed as ‘super fast’: the reality is 25mb/sec is the MINIMUM standard for internet to be even called ‘broadband’ (in world terms, that is).

First Burch now him. Well, we can say that Borderlands is dead now.

LOL, no ‘we’ can’t. Borderlands continues regardless.

Not for Fallout 1 & 2 fans.
