Melee Characters & the option for a Third-Person View

True story

If you have problems noticing where you are getting hit from, I suggest you either get a new prescription or start paying attention to what is going on around you. The feedback this game provides is one of the better User Interfaces I’ve seen in a game. I know precisely what is going on around me at all times, regardless of minions exploding around me and AOEs popping off every 2 seconds. I main Phoebe and Rath, and I have zero difficulty in tracking enemy movement, and knowing when I’m getting ganked.

Same exact thread.

There is a pretty simple solution for the “shooters will be op and can’t sneak them” argument, just no cross air for third person view.
It is damm annoying to keep targets in view and range with melee with so many knock ups, knock back, and so many cc going on.
But well anyway, I doubt they will change anything.

What about a target lock system for melee characters? You look at a close up enemy and land a standard attack on them. From there auto aim will follow that enemy until you either are attacked by other enemies, the target moves out of range or you are hit with CC. Maybe instead make it so that certain abilities apply target lock on activation or on hit and only last for a small time. I can see this being better for some melee characters than others. It would be better for Phoebe than it would for Rath.

I remember borderlands did that with brick. He had a skill so his berserker mode punches automatically auto aimed and dashed at the nearest enemy in your reticle, which helped out a lot because once he started getting elemental punches you couldn’t see a dang thing once you start punching

This game needs something like that as well.

Third person allows you to see someone attacking you from behind.

I know it takes getting used to, but melee offers a very consistent and high damage for the risk of losing sight of a slippery enemy.

Third person breaks the game a bit and removes the risk factor to melee.

This. All of this. If you were to give someone like me, who prefers melee, a third-person view, you will end up hating the feature. I will end you. Melee characters already do such a massive amount of DPS, that the only thing saving ranged characters is the off chance that the melee character loses sight of them.

When will ppl notice you cant just put an option for 3rd person into it as it would instantly unbalance the entire game.

Plus take forever to get the game re-programmed correctly, don’t want a Morrowind effect lol.

But ya, I noticed that there was way more explosions blinding me than I am used to today, plus with third person view I could follow someone like a hawk. Plus those flashbang attacks wouldn’t have much effect if you had third person view.

In short, 3rd person view would be bad in this game.

Its a good point but flashbangs WOULD still mess you up, otherwise it would make said grenades beyond useless.

Not as much though, it gets so bad my physical eyes hurt after it lol.

Third Person view for Melee is essential for many reason posted by the smart people here. Yet I see poeple arguing against it for not very good reason. Here they are (the against reason):

“Can see around corners”:
-The need for melee characters to see “properly” is more important than the little advantage of peeking around corners. Which would give ranged/squishy attackers more reason to play with his team, instead of charging alone.

“Game is designed for First Person View”:

  • In my opinion ,Third person View would not clash with game mechanics. I say Normal game play will continue. I don’t see where it would clash. Give me specific examples of clash between third person view and gameplay / mechanics.

I won’t be able to sneak behind the enemy, he will see me while I stab him in the back:
-Since when is this accepted as a game mechanics? IT WAS NEVER ACCEPTED IN ALL GAMES. The game should instead give you a big WARNING that someone is STABBING you from behind. Cause that what games do to help player in a VIRTUAL world where the player lack the sensory function they have in the real world. Also, don’t tell me these space heroes in BB can’t tell if someone is kicking their behind . RIGHT NEXT TO THEM.

“I did fine with Melee using first Person view, I killed 1000 and died once”:

  • I applaud your skill and luck! In a true test scenario, you would be pet against similar skilled and experienced player as you, and they have ranged attacks and you dont. Then we can use this as a real data for drawing conclusions. This has to be done dozen of times to have a good sample size.

“The game will take forever to re-code”

  • I am not a game developer (nor are you) but this does not strike me as hard to code. Especially since there are third person view in some champions skills.

“You have no skill, I see the target fine”

  • Thank the lord you are so good. We are all noobs compared to you! :unamused: We are not in the wrong by asking for a FIX to this problem. But you want us to live and adapt to the problem instead .

“GO play XXXX game. It has Third Person View”

  • I would not dignify this kind of comments with an answer. There are immature and disrespectful way of dismissing any debate about a game.

As I stated earlier, you don’t want someone like me getting my hands on third-person perspective as a melee character. And I’m most certainly not the only one who specializes in melee characters. Trust me, the first-person mode helps ranged characters more than it hinders them.

I generally want third-person view in the games I play. First-person is “immersion breaking” for me because the field of view is so limited that I feel like I’m looking through a submarine’s periscope. If Gearbox had seen fit to make it possible in Borderlands I would have been grateful.

But Borderlands isn’t a competitive game, and PvP is a large portion of Battleborn’s design intent. If third-person gives an advantage - and I think it would - then it would force those that don’t like it to play in third-person (in the PvP matches), which effectively eliminates choice, and that isn’t a good thing. I could see doing it for the PvE content for Battleborn, but not the PvP - but that would complicate matters for Gearbox. (I don’t think it is complicated in terms of making a third-person view work in and of itself, but I do think it becomes harder when you are trying to create a specific experience for the player. No, it wouldn’t take a huge amount of time and effort; there are BL1 methods for doing it in that game and it was actually pretty simple because most of the assets already existed. I think any co-op game requires you to be able to see other players and that isn’t a lot different than seeing your own player from behind.)

I do find it kind of odd to argue against third-person because it is easier to see than in first-person. Well, yeah, that’s the point, thanks for confirming it from the perspective of someone that prefers first-person. That being said, I certainly got used to first-person in Borderlands and even though it was hard to see at times, because of all the explosions and effects in Sal’s face, it didn’t stop me from becoming a decent player and enjoying the experience it gave. It’s one of my all-time favorite games. And I do think that anyone willing can learn how to play Battleborn well even though they are used to, and prefer, third-person.

Give target lock to Phoebe? Are you crazy? You must want to die over and over again in this game.

It’s like a dog chasing its tail. So fun, so tactical.

Given your reply you seem to imply that using this gamey tactic is what keeps you from losing horribly to her. Is that safe to assume? I suggested target lock only happen at close range and after an attack or maybe ability connects(with limited time if necessary), so the only way this would be OP would be if taking advantage of the players limited perception is the only way to win a close up battle with Phoebe.

Quite the opposite. I main Rath and Phoebe. Giving her a target lock would make me a god. So, I mean, if they gave it to her, I wouldn’t mind, but it would make her incredibly OP.

Ah. But I can see them balancing it out. CC could be given a bit more prominence. Oscar Mike could cloak to stop it. Taking enough damage could end it sooner. Gearbox could think of something if they wanted to add target lock.
