[MOD] Adjust campaigns scaling Difficulty in menu

My new mod for adjust (sometimes “hated”) scaling difficulty in both RM campaigns is released.

It needs tests from a more players to confirm the full functionality. Any response or experiences are appreciated.

Very special thanks to @Dwarfinator who adapted the options UI for it. Without his help this mod would not exist.

Great mod! I know many would like to see something like this incorporated into HWR. Maybe easy/normal/hard modes with scaling at 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5.

‘Incorporated into HWR’ means included in the base game, rather than being a mod.

Actually, i hope that it becomes part of the original game someday.
That was the reason for my nearly month old post in answer to idea from BitVenom.
But i fully understand that there are more important things to solve, especially good MP balance, so i decided try to do this mod, again thanks to Dwarfinator.

If it proves its functionality with other players so then i ask nicely again the devs to consider this. :slight_smile:

Great MOD. I have been looking for some way to get more replay from the campaign. A couple of questions before I post my experiences with playing the MOD.

QUESTIONS

  1. I would love to incorporate this MOD in an additional Campaign MOD if that is okay with you?
  2. What extra bonus was given to missions 5, 6, 8 and 10? I did not understand the steam post about this.

MY EXPERIENCES

I set the multiplier in the options to 5.

The first few missions, 1-3, do not have much affect… it is my guess that the expected fleet in the beginning does not change much do to the lack of build able ships and low econ of the first few missions.

Mission 4 Gehenna Outskirts, I expected to be harder. I started this mission with as large a fleet that could be made. I am unsure if it was adjusted at all for me.

Mission 5 Gehenna was AMAZING! I loved this mission the first time with the original campaign. With the extra ships I had to work real hard to win. I was only able to take out one garrison with 2 loaded carriers sneaking up through the dust clouds. Then, I believe the campaign has some count down or trigger that decides to send out probes if you are taking too long…when they did things got bloody! We had an epic battle and when done I slowly chipped away at the zillion turrets your MOD added for them. :slight_smile:

Mission 6 The Karos Graveyard was just okay. I entered with max fleet but it was a cake walk. I never liked this mission in the original… the extra movers they got with the MOD did not make it any harder. I do not think I lost a single unit.

Mission 7 Derelicts was… too much for me to handle and the reason I am writing this post before completing the campaign. This was one of my favorite missions in the vanilla campaign. And with the MOD I assumed it would be more like Gehenna. I came with a Maxed fleet, probably slightly larger than mission 5. I believe I had more RP. However, they made so much I could not even make a dent… not for lack of trying! I played it through 5 times until I had to give up. I will need to scale down and try again. hehe

Now, back to the drawing board! I am going to scale down to 4… then 3… and so on until I can beat it.

Thanks much for making this! I would love it if others would be able to incorporate this into their MODS or the devs made it standard. This is an amazing way to get more play out of missions.

Just for giggles, I finished the play through of this mission on scaling set to 2.

RESULTS
I defended the first wave… but the 2nd wave cost me everything but my MS, 3 Carriers, and the 1 captured destroyer I have had since an earlier mission.

After that is took me an hour to slowly make progress, repair, scavenge, and get to the end.

Sadly, the original campaign could use some tweaking… once resources are mined out the Vagyr carriers just sit there and wait for you to finish them off so you can scavenge their resources.

This was a little more manageable. I may go back and try on 3… but I wager it would be too tough. The campaign scripting simply gets to a point were they send everything to you at once no matter where you are in the map. :frowning:

No problem at all. Moreover is not my “know-how”, it uses engine functions that are in game since version HW2C.

In this missions according to the player’s fleet (actual/expected) are originally controlled some other aspects of the game (other RU injections to AI, health and weapon power to keeper, movers behavior etc.). I just only connect this with difficulty slider in menu. Is mostly done in three fixed steps of difficulty and if you have max out your fleet the slider no longer adds more difficulty.

Like i wrote in Steam the humor is from original developers from Relic, God bless them. Made me laugh too :wink:
I only edited it slightly for better readability and added to missions where it wasn’t.

Just for info, the reactive scaling difficulty isn’t in all missions. Logically, isn’t in the first missions, because it needs a player’s fleet of the previous mission end. If my notes are correct then:

  • in HW1 isn’t in mission 2, 11 and 13. In Mission 6 adds killing asteroids. In mission 7 is probably vanila bug and it does not work properly - I need more test.
  • in HW2 isn’t in missions 3, 4, 6, 8 and 10.

Probably, how the devs worried, they spend all extra RU on hookers and beer :wink:
