There is something as being too good to be authentic.
In the context of Homeworld, there's plenty of gorgeous concept arts that look amazing, but are simply too sleek to ever fit in. Homeworld has its own distinctive bluntness to it and if you want to make your own ships truly authentic, you have to search for the subtle cool factors, not something that stands out right away.
And same here. If you truly want to be authentic, you should go for that slightly awkward retro lego-sci-fi, with pointless wings all over it from no reason, jet engines in the weirdest places and some grapple hooks or radar dish thrown into it for good measure. Not something that looks so reasonable it'll never fit in.
