Mod ideas thread

A Taiidan splinter group is already, possibly, canon based on the campaign/lore. It wouldn’t be that big of a stretch.

I’ll have to pretend I didn’t read that! And also start winning the campaign faster…

I’m officially announcing that I’ll be starting a Legos of Kharak mod with help from Sastrei should he be willing. If anyone feels like they have the ability/will/time to participate, feel free to contact me. Basically I’m announcing it now because I know making tons of models and then converting them to .obj compatible files will take a load of time, but there’s probably a lot of time still before modding for DoK becomes available anyway, so might as well get a head start.

“Legos of Kharak”, lol! That struck me more amusing than it probably should have. When you guys start it, I’ll be ready…

…Just in case not everyone here checks the HW fanart threads too. You can thank LozTheBear for the render!!!

Taiidan Faction Brainstorming

I have two ideas at current for Taiidan ground craft… thought I would try to engage anyone passing through in trying to imagine a complete lineup. Here’s the thoughts:

  1. Ion Cruiser - This is hardly a stroke of genius on my part, but come on… who wouldn’t want the Taiidan to have a cruiser with an ion cannon? They would have access to the tech, I presume it would be quite plausible to implement it on this scale. Spinal mounted ion cannon, psychotic damage levels, no range advantage, no area damage.

  2. Mobile Air Defense - This idea I’m a bit more proud of. In place of conventional air-to-ground missiles the MAD (or whatever… no attachment to the name) would mount at least two flak turrets, screening aircraft with area damage. It would be the supreme anti-air unit but sacrifice its ability to engage other ground targets. In exchange, it gains the ability not only to screen aircraft but to also deploy countermeasures against air-to-ground missiles. This would probably be a manually activated ability like the mortar/DFB.

Beyond all of that, one of the major concerns about conceptualizing DoK factions is the ground/hover dichotomy. At this point I’m sort of imagining the Taiidan creating hybrids… land vehicles that support the balance of their weight on large wheels but use hovertech to supplement their mobility. It sounds silly but combining the two could have good advantages if done properly. Hovertech is most likely a major power-sink… it’s very hard to believe otherwise. But if you were to put just a couple of wheels on the ground (literally two, each independently driven on a single axle in order to allow effortless turning), you could relieve a lot of the stress on the hover drives while still being able to turn and move faster than wheels alone might allow. In theory, anyway. Part of why I push for this is that while hovertech does give Gaalsien an interesting flavor, it would be kind of sad to see any faction with higher-than-Coalition-level tech defaulting to hover drive. The game has cool suspension and drive-path mechanics that would be a shame not to take advantage of.

Anyway, just some thinkings. Hope someone else can add to my thoughts. It would be pretty neat if we could have an entire conceptualized Taii faction ready to go if the game ever becomes open to modding.

Sounds great! The best part… It is that it has the Taiidan in it! This in-game would be amazing.

I agree - a DoK Taiidan mod could be great. The scenario could be a battle for a key planet during the Taiidan rebellion. That way both sides could legitimately have the same units.

I’ll leave the justifying to you

My concern was just that it should happen. MP scenarios, as I’ve said before, can’t always be handily explained in the HW universe… that’s something I accept as handily allowing us to simply make ground ‘navies’ of some of the other races and not really worry about why. Even with your story though, you could always make subtly different skins for Imperial/Republic units and have roughly four of their craft designed/operate in notably different ways, lol.

Relatedly, I enthusiastically invite @Pouk to lead the effort of a whole line of Vaygr buggies.

What now, we’re modding DoK? Do we even know how yet?
Vaygr buggies you say. Hmm.

Well, this is all hypothetical… though I did see something that all but confirmed DoK modding will eventually be a thing. Check out post #15 at the bottom of the first page:

I’ve read that, but your reply means we still can’t do it yet.
I wonder when. It’s been a while, they could give us something small to play with for a start (like stats, textures…) and an access to Steam workshop. Right now all we can do is preproduction.

BTW:
“Vaygr Baserunner”.
-Has anyone ever said these two words together?

Also a mod launcher. Say you make Taiidan, I make Vaygr (somehow), a mod launcher would be nice to play these two in one game without the need to merge mods.

Or we’re just working on the same mod from day 1, lolol!

There are some nice things about having to wait to start modding. As long as they’re still cooking up their own content, there’s always the possibility that anything we do will become redundant. I’d hate to waste the effort! I (thought I) had strong reason to think about that yesterday when I saw this:
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/12987023_1603927223266980_8582803561655037582_n.jpg?oh=0b8ed31db67aa2b43725d1aa6b2cc58e&oe=5778A321

I thought, as many probably did, that it was something BBI had made rather than just an image they had been given by somebody else. So I immediately assumed they were going to make a Taiidan expansion on their own. At any rate I’m quite willing to wait until they stop making their own stuff before the modding becomes available. I should be working on space ships anyway…

Another thought… somebody should have rotorcraft. I’m pretty intrigued just to think about what a Homeworld rotorcraft might be like.

Does this look Vaygr enough?
Or not way too much? (Which is less obvious problem, but not less important.)
Because I’m afraid I made a stereotypically Vaygr RC car here:

I made it yesterday, I didn’t want to post it, but this thread still seems to be going, so why not.
You can’t unsee the RC car-ness though.

Oh, I LIKE that!!! I think it’s a wonderful start. Sure, maybe it borrows recognizable aesthetic from ye olde Vaygr space ships, but I personally don’t know how that can be helped. I tend not to mind a bit of that when the alternative is a bunch of stuff that doesn’t remind me of the race that built it at all. Besides, it’s far form just taking the assault craft chassis and throwing wheels on it, even at this early stage. I would definitely hope any finished Vaygr LAV would end up strongly resembling this!

The one thing I have to be skeptical about is the front end. The rear tires are on pretty pronounced suspension, but the front currently looks like the wheels would have little if any suspension at all. Of course your intention might not have been for the wheels to be simply bolted on to the forks, but in my VERY LIMITED understanding of suspension, I just assumed things would work much better if all the tires had pretty uniform ‘wiggle room’, so I wanted to caution you about how you go about attaching those front ones.

In any case, thank you APLENTY for treating us to a Vaygr buggy!!!

This may be as close as canon siurces get to Taiidan ground units, hinting at the hovering variety.

Very impressive insight! The big one on the far right reminds me of a Destroyer a bit… could be adapted into a pretty cool Cruiser. I ain’t givin’ up on the idea of giving them a few hybrids though… I’m really hoping to try to throw together an LAV concept soon. Pouk’s LAV certainly made me want to give it a shot!!!

Okay here we go… rough Taiidan LAV concept… hybrid wheel/repulsor. Proportions are not so close to what I imagined, but I did the best I could bare to do for today.

@Pouk, that looks great! Love the shadows and the sand-like background!

@Dom2, they look quite small compared to the wierd statues in the background. If only we knew what the size of those ships were compared to space ones!

Look at the specks by the vehicles, those are people. The smallest vehicles in the picture are about normal car/van sized.
