Movies: General Discussion

first one is still the best for me. I am team Vin Diesel, I will add Hobbs and Shaw (aka Mission Impossible/Robocop/Fast and Furious Movies) as last place.

Remember when Trainspotting came out in ‘96? And how we lost our minds when we saw it? Well I know I did, and my sister too. It introduced sooooo many things : Danny Boyle as the next directing messiah (eh, sort of I guess, sometimes), Ewan McGregor as the next huge actor (unfortunately this was his only truly great role), Ewen Bremner, Robert Carlyle, Jonny Lee Miller, Kelly Macdonald and OF COURSE Irvine Welsh’s incredible storytelling and writing. I mean, every one of these people became huge……because of this movie.

Then of course the sequel, T2, came out in 2017 — based on Porno — and obviously I had mixed feelings about the idea. Well it came and went unwatched until I happened upon it on Netflix tonight.

Story? Yes, for the most part. But it’s more Guy Ritchie treatment to a Welsh story, which in this case is not really a compliment.

Acting? Oh hell yes. Everyone. Spectacular.

Directing? Well……here’s where it kind of falls apart, or rather never quite comes together. It’s like kneading dough without enough water. Boyle diverged from his early path a long long time ago.

Music? No. Not good enough. This should have been much more carefully chosen. I’m wasn’t expecting Lust For Life but at least music that speaks to the characters, past and present. Instead it was chosen by someone who just didnae get it.

Just enough.

Black Widow was solid.

Almost about all I can say about it. Considering it was her big “starring” Marvel role, it felt like ScarJO was kind of going through the motions? Honestly Florence Pugh stole the show as Yelena, which may have been intended, given the motions that I think are going on. David Harbor was also great in his role, comical, yet somehow believable and likeable, despite the implications of the movie.

Biggest concerns as a comic book fan has to deal with how they handled taskmaster… I can’t say a lot about that without spoilers.

It really did. She just looked exhausted through the whole thing, maybe by design, maybe not.

I saw a comment that SJ was a sidekick in her own movie. The biggest question I had to myself was : if Pugh wasn’t in it, would it have been nearly as good? Really, no, it wouldn’t have.

So my greatest takeaway was that it was a baton transfer to Pugh to set up the upcoming Hawkeye TV show.

Still, very entertaining and on par with your average Marvel movie (for better or worse).

Side thought : I wonder what would happen if Feige stepped aside?

Gonna try to hit spoilers correctly here, please dont beat me if I don’t get it right-

I don’t think it has too much to do with feige (dircetly). I think with the plot they’re giving “madam hydra” (or maybe not), they’re building up to a “Dark Reign” storyline where someone big and evil takes power and replaces the avengers with bad dudes - this was a real plot in the mid 2010’s, and had some high spots and low spots, but after a big showing with thanos… wouldn’t be that bad of a turn. They already have John from the Falcon/winter soldier show to show up as Cap, and from this movie, they have their black widow proxy (who will probably turn out to be good vs a bad person). Just a thought at this point, and early to call, but if bullseye shows up? He’s gonna be hawkeye. That’s my call at least.

I wish they killed hawkeye instead of Blackwidow or a variant of Natasha appears in this reality to do part 2.

Gunpowder Milkshake

So incredibly unconscionably horribly terribly bad. So bad. So very very bad.

Someone thought the Stepford Wives as Wick-ian assassin cabal would be a great idea. Very bad. Infuriatingly bad.

Did not finish. Because bad.

It wouldn’t have worked the other way - the only way the universe lives is if Clint loves Natasha more than his dead wife and kids.

Plus Yelena kind of stole the show, so we should be fine

Me and the kids enjoyed space jam a new legacy. I think the critics want an oscar worthy performance from the cast for them to rate this movie as good. Lol

Speaking of Florence Pugh (Yelena), we just watched Wrestling With My Family with her in the lead, which was a blast.

Once again, she proves she’s a force and not just comedic and physical but dramatic chops as well. She’s got quite an impressive resumé : Midsommar, King Lear, Lady Macbeth, Little Women, Little Drummer Girl. That’s incredibly impressive.

I haven’t seen it myself but from what little hit I have seen… it seems like they did fine.

I think the most damning review I saw was “It seems like they tried to pander more to the younger minecraft millenial”…

Yeah you ■■■■■■■ dumbass, its a kids movie.

You liked it because the first one came out when you were a ■■■■■■■ kid.

We watched Their Finest tonight. Lovely film, but not quite the point of the post.

The subtitles wrote Wales as Whales. Yes, they capitalized Whales, meaning they did so with the full knowledge that it was a place and not an animal.
Next they subtitled Errol Flynn as Erbil Flynn. Then Earl Flynn.
Plus a smattering of mistaken English vernacular.

Erbil :man_facepalming:

Well this is pretty funny-

“One note I got was on Man of Steel, where the ending involves Superman utilizing the pod that he arrived in as a child in order to bring down General Zod’s ship,” Goyer said. “The note we got from the studio said, ‘You have to change that.’ We asked why. They said, ‘Because if Superman uses that pod and it’s destroyed while saving the city, how is he ever going to get back home to Krypton?’ There was just this long pause and we said, ‘Krypton blew up. You saw 30 minutes of it!’”

previously he said that an alternate ending is that they put Zod in the pod and put him in the phantom zone, but it feels anti-climactic that’s why they changed it.

OT. i am binge-watching The Flash, I am now in episode 18 of season 1. This is in my viewing list for a while now, I just can’t find time for it.
