see how i have 181 new topics?

See @poisonedbite’s post. The screenshot. It was New (insert number), you have to click on the tab and dismiss them all the time. I get the use of the feature but it’s more annoying than helpful.

It gets better if you set the time for new stuff lower, but I think there should be an option to either hide the tab, or consider topics new when ā€œNeverā€, so it doesn’t look so distracting. It’s only really important for regulars, and well, we all know about where that status went.

Also, I think the text would look better if it were lighter than black on the options, at least lighter than the box around it all, but that’s kind of minor.

So I was just looking through the preferences and noticed the option ā€œdon’t jump to my post after replyā€
Is this new? Because it’s awesome. Always hated losing my place in larger threads like the RTT after hastily replying.
(If it’s not new and always been there, wow I’m blind)

This is the second request I have seen for this in a few days, will get an OP edit time limit site setting which is divorced from the other general post edit time limit.

Its been there for a while at least, its really useful.

Excpet when you reply to someone, then scroll down and see that someone else already said it and you look like an idiot.

This has been around for quite a while, what we really need to add is add something like http://notifyjs.com/ that notifies you as soon as your new post is saved and gives you the option to navigate to it.

Thanks for confirming I am a dope. You too @Mr_Sandman :smile_cat:

That is another option Id like though. After having enabled said option above, i can see how that would be useful. I’ve already questioned whether my reply posted and checked just in case before navigating away.

I’ve noticed that there is a steady stream of people posting in the main categories instead of selecting a sub-category before creating their topic, and I know this has been bugging @Kitty_Jo

So, as suggestion for @joekgbx / @Jeffybug:
On the header for each category, beside the logo and below where it says ā€œThis is the place to discuss _____ā€ add a second line that says ā€œPlease select a sub-category before creating a new postā€

It won’t completely stop the problem, but hopefully it might reduce it!

Agreed. I constantly see people posting like you said and Kitty Jo is always there to sort it out. Hopefully people will read more before doing something.

So. Much. Yes…It’s such a pet peeve of mine…

I pointed this out when we were still testing though…I’m guessing at this point that it cannot be fixed.

Although feel free to surprise me

So your next suggestion would be ideal. Maybe have it as a small pop up, similar to the ā€œhere are topics similar to yoursā€ That one gets when making a new thread.

I was thinking it would look something like this:

Yea, I’ve noticed that too. I’ll look into this today.

On further examination, I think the real issue is that the ā€œ+ New Topicā€ button always appears on every page, even the main one Further, when you do click on it, the sections are listed as categories along with the areas you actually want people to post in (see screen shot below).

Is there a way of using CSS/JS to hide or deactivate the ā€œ+ New Topicā€ button unless you are actually in a category? Maybe add ā€œpostableā€/'notpostable" classes or something?

Something I realised I’ve been missing is a thing which shows how many people, and which specific users are on the forums.

I think the best way to implement it would be to have a thing at the top of the homepage with ā€œX people onlineā€ and if oyu clicked on it it would show a list of members and a number of Lurkers ā€œGuestsā€.

Because its nice to know if someone is still online when you say someting to them, if they are online you can propably expect a reply soon etc…

EDIT @joekgbx this was 2 months ago…

Hi, I’ve just made a thread where I attempted to link a single post from the old forums with regular url tags. The link does nothing but the weirdest thing is that when I edited it to just paste the link as-is, it wouldn’t let me copy it. I typed it out by hand, and it still wouldn’t let me copy it from the actual post. Yeah, I’m using an old opera version… copying worked on an up-to-date browser, but the link still does not.
Here’s the thread in any case:

EDIT: Massive thanks to @VaultHunter101 for the quick and helpful response, it seems using the ā€œlinkā€ (the diagonal ā€œ8ā€) button on the post GUI works

Try taking the smiley out and put it somewhere else. I think it’s messing with the way Discourse handles links so it can track the number of times each one is followed.

It might be too early for this, but I wouldn’t mind getting one sometime in the future. Sure, we have a couple of threads in the Borderlands 2, but with an entire section we could have much more thorough discussion about our ideas, and the devs could find the more interesting ones easier.

I’d like to be able to mark new topics as read without having to actually read them, sort of how the old forum allowed us to mark a subforum as read. Thanks.

Seconded. The ā€œNewā€ page can be overwhelming, and it’s a pain having to go all the way to the bottom just to ā€œDIsmiss Newā€. I’d already suggested having the ā€œDismissā€ button at top and bottom. Here’s a summary possible features that would make the ā€œNewā€ page actually useful:

  • Ability to change sort order from newest > oldest to oldest > newest
  • Ability to dismiss individual topics/posts
  • Ability to sort by primary category e.g. all Homeworld, all BHC, all BL2, etc.
  • Dismiss buttons at both top and bottom of page regardless of number of entries
