Old forum link archive

As the old forum will close down soon, below are the archived versions, divided by subsections of the original forum. An index of some more interesting or important pages may be added in the future.

There was also a “subsection” for Tales from the Borderlands, but that just redirects to Telltale Games’ website. I have also allowed myself to exclude the Gearbox Shop and Tech Support sections for reasons hopefully obvious (i.e. they’re not as important - they’re still archived, I just couldn’t be arsed to get the links).

If you have links to specific threads you would like to be included in the list, please post them below.

Also, below is a rant thingy this thread originally began with:

So, as you can read here, the old Gearbox Software forums are shutting down June 30th.

I’m the kind of person who despises seeing histories of communities dying. When I see a dead forum or abandoned fansite, a part of me dies inside. And I do not want anyone to share this feeling.

Which is why, despite being a relative newcomer and not horribly social on this forum, I want to preserve it. Because its’ history, YOUR history deserves it.

There is a webite called the Wayback Machine, available here. It allows you to save a functional image of a webpage with minor, if any, losses. It is run by a non-profit organisation, and archiving the websites costs nothing, only a bit of patience while waiting for the webpage to save.

The forums, old and new, are full of information that everyone should be able to use. Even now people look around to find something from the old days and are unable to find it because of how many hurdles one has to jump over to get it, assuming it’s not gone forever. I urge you to save as much of it as you can: old, creative character builds, gameplay and story discussions, various analyses that may have been lost to broken links and the likes, or if you’re feeling particularly nostalgic, some funny or important threads you were part of or simply wish to immortalize.

Your history is yours to preserve. And the more people help, the more we can save. There are still many holes, pages that have been lost. Help do something about it.

…damn, I sound cheesy when I get in this mood

I have been, over the last few months, transfering useful guides and general knowledge of borderlands 1 over here. Using that site funny enough…

I will continue porting over old stuff periodically as I have free time and motivation.

Your plea has not fallen on deaf ears, trust me.

I had a look but I cant find where the Borderlands forum is on there.

Here’s the old form link: http://oldforums.gearboxsoftware.com/oldforums/20150308064910/http://oldforums.gearboxsoftware.com/

Go to https://archive.org/web/, there should be a “Save Page Now” option. Just copy the link there, and it will save the site’s image as of right now.

Is there an index or anything to show which pages have been done or does it tell you that if you try to save one already there?

You could try searching for a page in the archive first. Some might be saved already.

UPDATE: For some reason, archiving links from the Borderlands subsection, and possibly others, doesn’t quite work… I’ve contacted the guys at Wayback Machine and I’m waiting for an answer

EDIT: Okay, see this example link?: http://oldforums.gearboxsoftware.com/oldforums/20150308064924/http://oldforums.gearboxsoftware.com/forumdisplay.php?f=71
If you want to see whether the page is already archived, you should remove the first half of it: in this case what should be left is http://oldforums.gearboxsoftware.com/forumdisplay.php?f=71
However, if it isn’t archived, then saving the image is no good, you’ll just get the Pywb Error.

Theres a few pages I wouldn’t mind saving so ill have a play around , see what gives.
Thanks for the heads up with this , its an interesting site.

WITNESS the old forum!
It will run eternal SHINY AND CHROME!

I also save some threads in offline PDFs for my grandchildren’s grandchildren’s grandchildren,
but i can’t get the access to the next pages of this one http://oldforums.gearboxsoftware.com/oldforums/20150308090826/http://oldforums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=364143

Just wonder, It was not saved or I just append incorrect URLs or something?

All pages of similar thread from section with gray background works fine yet, and can be switched by adding “&page=n”

Okay, important thing I noticed:

Apparently the archived version we’re using was either created via Wayback Machine or in parallel with WM’s archive - there is a mirror of the first page of every thread at the same date, and around the same time, which suggests that it was made using the same tools and with an additional copy (that being oldforums.gearboxsoftware.com) on top of WM, or somebody was very adamant about saving as much as possible when the migration to the new forums began - my money’s on the firtst option.

However, unfortunately there is a mirror of ONLY the first page of every thread, or so it would seem. So I’m afraid anything beyond that is gone, or would be much harder to recover, at the very least.

But the good news of all this is: The vast majority of content has already been saved. Transitioning between subsections is a bit wonky, and links to other threads within threads do not work, but it’s definitely salvagable, and not as time-critical as I initially thought. Still, an index of the most useful pages would be nice to have. I’ll try to compile something for Borderlands 1, maybe the others too, if I feel like it.

EDIT: As it turns out, not every page got archived on oldforums. So far, it doesn’t seem to be anything important, though, but keep that in mind. Wayback Machine seems to work as intended, just remove the redundant part of the link as explained a couple posts above.

Thanks! I resurrected the old “suggested Borderlands 1 playthrough to maintain difficulty” thread using some of these tools. I didn’t quite understand why only the first pages were loading. Makes sense. I’ve been around the forums since possibly as early as 2009. Don’t recall anymore. But I posted a lot.

Kind of sad that we’ll be losing this soon.

Oh weird… I thought they’d remain archived, well, forever. I pulled what I wanted out of them moments before they were originally shut down, but it’s still weird to see that frozen archive go.

Nope. https://web.archive.org/web/20150308204616/http://oldforums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=102108

When I’ve tried that in the past, it seemed to only count up to three pages and then fail. Is that still the case?

Seeing the old forums reminds me of how much I miss signatures and how long I have been a member.

Always glad to get some memories back
