[PC] Feedback from a Professional FPS Player

Greetings,
First of all… Thank you for allowing us to test your game before release.
I had an extremely pleasant experience playing your game for 12 hours straight while I should have been working

I don’t have much to say about bugs as I’ve personally found 0 bugs and the game ran flawlessly on these specs:
Without any crashes.

CPU: AMD FX-8350 Eight Core 4.20Ghz
RAM: 8GB 1866mhz DDR3
VRAM: 8GB VRAM Nvidia GTX970
OS: Windows 10 (64bit) using Dx12

Constant 60FPS+ smooth gameplay.

So onto the feedback, I’ve pretty much fallen in love with your sniper character called Marquis, fits my play-style providing covering fire from the back-lines of the formation while my friends are on the the front-lines not allowing anyone past, while also allowing me to single-handedly deal massive amounts of damage to the opposing team’s formation.

Aim Assist
And since I am a mostly FPS player that has started playing since the age of 6 years old, I will complain about aim-assist, because after a few games I have disabled aim assist as it was “getting in the way” and sometimes it felt like cheating, I personally don’t think aim assist should be allowed in multiplayer matches, but would be nice to have it on in single player matches vs AI.

I disabled the aim assist after getting around 35 kills in a single game, it felt wrong, I felt like my own aiming skill was being over-written and I started relying on it too much, therefore I had more pleasure playing without it while being slightly annoyed that it’s possible to use it in multiplayer, but hey… it’s part of the test.

My friends that I played with know that I’m basically godlike at FPS games, they did expect me to kill alot but said that my character is overpowered not because of the game, but because of the high skill curve that is achievable with it, Any player that is familiar with sniping at a HIGH skill-level will be able to completely destroy teams using Marquis.

I somewhat agree, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to say the character is overpowered, I feel like it needs to be adjusted a bit, Head-shots are the key for the most damage output and each different model has different hitboxes I’ve noticed, so it takes time to learn the precise head-shot point for critical damage, it has a lot of potential when used correctly… far too much potential actually.

With that on mind, One of my other friends that is no longer an FPS player but more of a MOBA player, prefers to use abilities over auto-attacks/basic-attacks and have played Thorn for the life regeneration possibilities and so we compared Thorn vs Marquis as “snipers”.

The first thing we noticed, was the difficulty in hitting shots with Thorn in comparison to Marquis.
With Marquis it’s really easy to time your shots, since they’re lightning fast shots fired from what looks like an bolt-action sniper rifle mechanic, they travel straight, fast, and to the point.
While Thorn fires slow moving arrows that have huge drop, making it extremely difficult to be as accurate as Marquis is.
Which forces Thorn to move up-close and personal with the opposite heroes making use of her kit for close quarter combat and agility, seems alright… but I feel like it would be way more pleasant to play Thorn if you could increase the projectile speed of arrow WHILE fully CHARGED up to about Marquis speed to keep it fairly balanced between snipers.

How would that change her game-play?
This would allow for players that prefer the FPS aspect of the game and players that don’t want to be at the front-lines constantly, be able to use sniper expertise to its fullest.
Most of Thorn players I’ve seen almost never charge their arrows, as it’s a somewhat waste of time, why charge an arrow when in close quarters if you hit 2 quick arrows that crit will be more efficient.

So I think it would be a nice feeling being able to fully charge an Arrow, greatly increasing the projectile speed and reducing the drop mechanic, being able to snipe players by landing consecutive charged arrows from the distance.

That reminds me…
On overgrowth Marquis is able to snipe from behind the Sentry to another Sentry halfway through the map, so not sure if that’s intentional or I’m breaking your expectations… Because I was able to get kills through the small gaps on the platform that players use to snipe on, that basically means I’m able to kill other snipers from the top of my platform straight to their 1st Sentry-thingy, (Sorry forgot the exact name for it). Which allows me to wipe out their entire sniping line while picking up kills without other players being able to STOP me, and that’s when I felt bad, because assassins that tried to stop me had to go through the powerful sentry protecting me, pushing was almost near impossible aswell as I had a clear headshot line to minions/mercs.

^ So no idea where to go with this…

I forgot what else I wanted to say, So i might add onto it later…
It was something about matchmaking system, but i completely forgot how I was going to say it.

Once again, thank you for giving us the chance to experience the gameplay before actually buying the game.
And I hope it has benefited your development based on feedback from open beta and previous testers.

Good job on releasing frequent updates during BETA stage aswell.

And here is a cool screenshot of my progress with Marquis.

IMO the major problem with marquis isn’t actually with him, but with the incursion map we’re playing. It’s highly advantageous for him. Only one “main entry” (with a smaller one on one side an a difficult to access one on the other side), lots of place for him to cover all of the main no man’s land zone of the map without endangering himself. If there was a bigger and larger obstacle in the middle of the “no man’s land” for example, this would reduce his efficiency. If the map had two main entry impossible to cover at the same spot at all, that would alleviate a part of the problem as well.
Marquis isn’t as strong in Paradise map because he cannot cover both side, and can be reached easily by almost anyone no matter where he choose to be. He’s strong anyway, but what makes him so bad on the map you exclusively played is the lack of way to progress while avoiding his bullets.

All the following is under the understanding the game is in a tenuous state

Speaking as his MOBA loving, Thorn playing friend a lot of other Thorn players I see do not use charged attacks for the curse proc and bonus ability damage, I can’t be sure if this is because they are new to the mechanic or how to play the character or if it is because things can be exceedingly hard to land on anyone who isn’t Montana Shayne Isic etc obviously there is a big learning curve while everyone settles into a new game but in my Thorn game play I have found her a lot less a sniper more a skirmisher come assassin because charged arrows up close are much more effective tied to her abilities. Demon was mistaken regarding charge shot seeming useless but that is due to misinformation about the tie in with the abilities.

My prime example is that attacked by two melees I turned ran using enhanced jump, shot a charged arrow behind me followed volley blight and ult and executed Phoebe before she had any real chance to damage me and sent the other one running. There is no element of sniper game play for me other than when I am waiting for health regen and take pot shots with charged arrows and volleys which frankly do very little to most targets especially if their team has a support. This should be noted this is not criticism more of a gripe with her classification or idea. Overall I would say one in every 10 kills i get would be at long range ususally sniping a runner, which as stated by Demonicson Maquis fills that roll a lot better.

I fully agree with demons assessments of Thorn’s basic/bow attacks not feeling snipery because i simply yield substantially better scores, more assists, up close and personal. If this is not in keeping with her theme I would lean towards tweaking the charged auto attacks for ranged benefit and scaling down some flat damage of Blight.

In reply to Zefyris

I can agree that incursion favours Marquis somewhat but Demon is not lying when he says he as a professional FPSer and that when we are playing premade with friends we know how to block off and funnel the enemy and we call for him basically like artillery. That style of play makes him very strong pretty much disregarding his abilities. In paradise I can agree that he would be weaker as he can only cover one side but then again so can the enemy so this does not negate his effectiveness frankly I do not see many people catch him much because even if someone does come for him they have to bypass allied players usually and then chase him where he has roughly the same chance as most range characters to escape.

Overall the game feels smooth bar some clipping issues my primary play experience with Thorn has been enjoyable if not what I expected.

Charging your arrows already increases speed and reduces drop, I guess they could do it more. I didn’t really find it easier to hit with her than Marquis but I also used a lot of longbow in bl2.

Up close her Volley also really hits hard which gives her a different advantage.

Pro FPS Player…

So it does the drop decrease is a little better but I still doesnt feel her basic attacks give her that sniper feel is all, and as I said up close and personal I can litter arrows of death into people whereas at range I may as well be shooting peas at a giant enemy robot. *Cough" Isic Cough

I found him a lot easier than most

  • Tier 2
    CURSED EARTH
When Thorn is touching Blight’s field, all of her arrows become cursed.
  • Tier 4
    FOCUSED VOLLEY
Volley is concentrated to three arrows, dealing greater damage per arrow. +66% Damage per Arrow, -2 Arrows
  • Tier 5
    FIENDISH CURSE
Bonus damage to cursed targets penetrates shields. +100% Shield Penetration

Put blight at your feet, curse him and put a Focused Volley into his massive slow moving crit box and follow up with quick shots. You can take him down pretty quick.

I agree that might work but it is a very specific build for dealing with certain targets.

Thats more preffered play style i usually take the T2 for speed to get away and generally prefer it on offense or for wave clear. I take the bonus curse duration and damage at tier 5 for the quicker out trade, but as I said new game lots of experimenting to be done.

I spec different based on who im matched up with and what mode

Me to to some newbie extent I find at close range I can fight almost anyone with my standard helix config. I mean more my effectiveness at range against tanky characters. I should add comparing to Marquis who basically turns them into swiss cheese

I looked at your youtube and honestly wasn’t impressed by your aim. Exactly what game were you sponsored and salaried in, and by who? Google only brought up this weird korean-looking call of duty copy.

I have to agree on the aim assist part …
While it has some right to exist (for gamepads) and while it´s probably not used as frequently as many think or is as big an advantage it just leaves me with a bad feeling.

Whenever you get rekt by a Marquis or some such char you can´t help but wonder wether you just got killed because of skill or because he has easy mode on.

Didn’t say anywhere that I’m a “modern” Pro, I am not in any giant gaming communities such as Counter Strike etc…
But I am simply a World-Class player at DF:BHD a small (2000± player) community that was once a legendary FPS game and was supported by ESL in 2003.

This topic isn’t about it though, but i’m just going to leave it here that I do have full right to call myself a Professional FPS player, won about 9 different tournaments, both online and LAN.

Any FPS game, I pick up really easily and after a few hours I can already be in the top 10-5% of the players,
It’s that easy for me.

As for my aim, it’s easy to talk by just watching been leading the skill ceiling for BHD for about 4 years now.
Sorry for @ offtopic, someone just wants to argue for no reason.

Okay, then, back on topic.

Which, to remind everyone, is the game. Not other forum users.

Back on topic indeed.

Perfectly understandable, I also feel like aim assist limits player improving capabilities, using aim assist will only slow down your improvement for aiming speed and accuracy.

At the very least I feel like it should be optional setting and not being defaulted at the start of the game, perhaps it is maybe just Marquis, or Sniper classes that benefit too much from aim assist? If that’s the case then wouldn’t it be possible to disable in multiplayer aim assist for PC users while sniping/scoped in? Would that work? how good of an idea it is to make aim assist useless on heroes that benefit far too much from it?

What do you think?

I agree on the fact that it limits improving capabilities … Hell … when I tried the damn thing on Mike for just a few minutes out of curiousity I already noticed a change in my aiming afterwards bc. it was effective and I was already somewhat depending on it.

You said the option was on by default? … as I took my time with the settings before playing my first match I don´t remember if any Aimbot function was switched on by default … o.0 (there are 3 afair … snap on target with iron sights, stick on target and compensate recoil … it´s quite disgusting when you think about it -.-)

In another thread that was contra-aimbot the moderator brought up disabled ppl multiple times and that keeping them out of competetive pvp modes would not be fair but I don´t know what the devs take on that matter is. I personally think it´s more important to deny easy mode to thousands of sissies who should be able to play without an Aimbot than to be the PC principal of shooters …

Alright then, Waiting for release…
Can’t wait to start my progression and see what’s in reward for me. :stuck_out_tongue:

May is going to be a fun month!
Definitely aiming for “Master of Marquis” title

Question to those that know, Will matchmaking be something like “Elo Rating” or some other type of system?

That was me. I brought it up once, but got into a discussion with a very unpleasant individual (who, incidentally, is now banned). Nothing ‘pc’ about it, accessibility for those less fortunate than yourself is just good practice. I didn’t mention competitive multiplayer, either. Please don’t misrepresent me.

And less talk of ‘sissies’, please. Contribute all you like, politely. Name calling isn’t polite.

Geez … sorry then.

I don´t want to misquote you or anyone else, but here´s what i remembered:
… one of the posters in that thread suggested that aim assist should at least be disabled for competetive/ranked mode which the moderator (you?) rejected as there shouldn´t be a part of the game that anyone was refused to take part in.
… wasn´t it something along those lines? (If I got that wrong … care to link the discussion again? :worried:)

And … omg! … I don´t have any problem with features that allow disabled ppl to enjoy a video game (singleplayer or unraked that is) but imo a feature such as aim assist should be disabled in a competetive multiplayer environment to allow even odds for everybody. I think in a subsidary matter such as video games enjoyment of the majority should not be compromised for the enjoyment of a minority (and I guess being shut out from some kind of ranked mode would not hinder anyones enjoyment in any serious form anyway) … but everybody is ofc entitled to his or her oppinion)

… Apparently the devs are going to remove it completely for M/K anyway and calling it an oversight … so I guess they never were as caring as we thought? :hushed:

As long as it’s still present for controller, I don’t see any contradiction. The poster in question was calling for it to be removed completely, in all modes.
