While I agree with a lot of what is being said here, I have to say that I personally think having the system be that the higher level player gets precedence is an awful idea. This game encourages teamwork pretty heavily, and that system, IMO, would discourage teamwork because it immediately puts the lower level player down. I can’t speak for anyone else, but having to surrender the character I want to play as to someone who has gotten the chance to play with them MORE is only going to make me vindictive, and, petty though it may be, I’m not going to go out of my way to help that person. Not only that, but it would discourage people from trying to pick up and play new characters, and is going to cause people to focus more strongly on single character so that they always get them, versus picking towards strengths and weaknesses. The system does need to change, don’t get me wrong, just not to that.
A lot of good points have been made. And by no means am I saying my ideas are perfect. But my point in this post is the fact that it hurts both sides. The team, and the player.
I like the disbanding of the entire lobby idea, and the player who caused it getting a penalty. I’m willing to make that sacrifice.
Quite the contrary I believe, alacrity.
When you begin to make your way up in levels you find a niche. Be it a tank, DPS, etc. When you find this Niche you exploit it. I’m an excellent sniper in any game, but give me a bow and calling it a “sniper” just doesn’t do that word justice.
The upper level players have found their player, their set of gear, and their strategy. Where as the lower level player simply is forced to choose from another assortment of characters around that same base level. It’s a much larger hindrance to higher level players who have put a lot of time into specific characters, rather than the noob who’s still trying to find his niche.
I see, but isn’t that somewhat solved by a matchmaking system where higher-ranked players match with higher ranks, and the same for lower-level? I mean, people need the chance to learn characters, and getting tossed into a match where the character you want to try and learn is already locked down by someone higher than you seems as though it will just force you to continually switch around who you’re playing as, and therefore never actually learn anyone. I guess my question is how does a lower ranked player catch up on a specific character if they’re continually walled from playing as them? In example, I’ve been in love with Galilea’s character and design since long before the beta, and was really looking forward to playing as her. But I got around to unlocking her slower than everyone else, and it turned out that she’s extremely powerful, so I had to wait six matches to even get in as her, and then I didn’t know what I was doing. How would I have been supposed to learn to play as Galilea if higher-level Gal players had kept me from using her?
Definitely some good ideas in here. But I also agree with the pick something else option. Try to get good at completely different roles so that when Marquis is picked you can step in with what the team needs. For example, are they now missing a healer? Or a melee?
Sure. You’ll stumble but you’ll probably get some more balanced skills because of it.
Also man do I also love playing marquis. I found some of the other gunner guys to be interesting too though. But sometimes I went into the lobby hoping for marquis and getting that same problem. Someone else picking first.
I love playing Marquis, but it’s just better to have fun and expand your skill a bit into other character roles so that you can replace a role if it’s not there in the match. Tonight, I’m going to try playing Caldarius. He looks like a mid-ranged in-and-out of combat character that seems to rely a lot on confusing the opponent with speed.
Solo in Story mode. Aka grinding. Works for every char.
But that seems unfair. You’re not getting PVP experience until you’ve just sat and plugged away at enemies for who knows how long? I just think we can find a better system than screw the guy who’s just starting out.
And how do you think everybody else learnt their chars … divine intervention?
However they could, but the system of allowing higher level players to pick first isn’t in place. I don’t think you should have to grind story mode just to have a chance to use someone online. I think perhaps the better system would be to choose your character prior to queueing, and then the game assigning classes onto teams. Maybe each team gets a sniper, support, defender, attacker, and versatile? I can’t say how it might work, but I think there’s a middle ground somewhere.
Letting more “experienced” players choose first would be a silly “fix” to (what I think is) a nonexistent problem. Battleborn is a TEAM based game. You work with your TEAM to win. If you don’t get the character you want to pick, oh well, pick someone who will complement your TEAM. I don’t want to have to queue over and over again just because someone didn’t get the character they wanted. There is no I in TEAM.
What I’m trying to say here is that the game shouldn’t cater to people who just want to do what they want to do and when they want to do it, because it’s a game focused on TEAMS. Not trying to attack anyone here or anything.
Have not played the beta, or MOBAS in general. But what is the reason you can’t have a team of same toons? Would that screw up balance? I don’t see a reason why two or 5 people can’t play the same toon.
I’ve never said my ideas are perfect, nor will I.
My main gripe is that is comes down to speed of picking the character. Even a coin flip. There has to be a better way to do it.
I do pick other characters, and I try to play a different role. But the point of a PVP game is to give people an avenue to play the way they want. And when I can’t play the way I want. It makes me resent the fact that I have to play through a game in a style that I don’t like. Phoebe is my other favorite. But I could also play as Rath.
To avoid this entire thing have player selection outside of the game. Have players choose before they go in. If they back out then the game can re-pick before the game actually loads in.
I appreciate the feedback guys. Although some of you are a little overzealous.
I have to say I agree with this. Personally I always try to pick something the team needs, or if no one is picking I’ll choose someone versatile like Oscar Mike to kick it off. I just don’t want to see the game become difficult for people to pick up and play because of people who’ve had it longer or have had more time to play.
I would have no objection to people being able to leave the lobby and letting them be replaced by someone else.
Randy V. Made a post last night about the possibility of eventually having a sort of “first available” queue for people that just want to get into a match as quickly as they can. If something like that could be implemented, this would be the perfect use for it. A pre-existing lobby would would have priority, so even if someone left, the spot would be quickly filled.
I agree it is good to have more than one character you like to play, but ultimately this is a game. It’s supposed to be fun, right? If someone else isn’t going to have fun because the character they wanted got picked, then let 'em walk. It’s not my place to dictate what is fun for someone else.
I always wondered if they could just make it so you pick your character then queue up? Even for parties it would work out and reduce load times. If in a party just say you want to switch after a game then you could go back to your lobby and switch. Downside would be communicating with your team to pick a character in the lobby as it matches you up wouldn’t happen but being brutally honest here, randoms never really communicated anyway. Thoughts?
Xevren that is a good solution. If you were able to pick a main choice, and then a back up even if you wanted to. It would make having players using characters they are inexperienced with a thing of the past. And if you want to try out a character it makes it almost certain you’ll use them or another you would like.
Your question, to which I replied, was - and I repeat:
How would I have been supposed to
learn
to play as Galilea if higher-level Gal players had kept me from using her?
I e about learning char. Not about getting first choice in PVP. Please, keep on your own topic.
(Further, if you for some reason can’t manage to game solo, there’s every chance to game multi in Story/PVE.)
(And as if those aren’t enough options for you to learn char … there’s private match-making in both PVE/PVP.)
The question, to which I replied, was about learning char. Not about getting first choice in PVP.
Please, read posts in their entirety, and, replies in their context.
It’s a double edged blade that needs to be fixed with higher level player’s getting preference over beginners.
Like if you’re level 36 and level 15 with this character you get to use them over the level 5 trying them out for the first time because it’s less impact to the lower level trying out characters.
I ddin’t realize you started the game at level 36 and with a character level of 15.
Oh that’s right you didn’t now stop acting like an entitled brat and let someone else play as that character and oh IDK maybe not leave when you don’t get your way and leave them in a 4v5.
Really constructive smart ass comment! Really helps the game, thanks!
If you actually have read any of my long posts on this forum you would read that queuing up a certain player helps both high level, and low level characters. If you actually read any of these you would realize I still drudge through the games with a a character I don’t like. But obviously you’re smarter than I am, not reading what I’ve written and all that.
By queuing up one, or multiple characters, you don’t feel like you’re getting screwed out of a character, you are for sure going to play the character you want to try.
This guarantees specialists play as their preferred characters, and this guarantees low level players a shot at a new popular character that everyone else already uses.
Let’s try constructive comments, instead of constantly attacking someone. That’s one instance. There are thousands of players in the beta alone. This is honestly a change that would help the community from top to bottom, thanks though.
