Please let us have a story without a horrific grind

why do you put the story behind a grind wall? Yeah you are gonna have your progression ladders and the normal skinner box stuff but why, the heck, do you have to hide the story?

I kind of have an expectation that the story of the game will be something I can play through immediately if I feel like it. But here we have a bunch of disjointed “story mode” missions that honestly lack much story. It is all tied behind the character story unlocks with some crazy grinds.

Are we really at the point that you have to hide EVERYTHING behind a grind wall for a progression reward? I mean whats next, you start locking textures behind a grind wall and players are in a tron like environment until they get 1000 kills? Did your team or focus group conclude that rewards were coming up short so you starting throwing in the everything onto the progression ladder? These lore challenges consist of the BULK of the story in this game.

Cmon man, don’t be the devs that go for burned out players… don’t be luke smiths…

You can see the story and play it, the “story” like you call it is the lore of the characters what a lot of the lore (not all) only tell you things before the game’s story itself like why some characters join the battleborn or what they were doing before joining.

I think you didn’t get what OP is saying.

What I understand is that the OP want to play the lore of the game and he confuses the story with it,because the story consists in fight the varelsi and Rendai to prevent them consume the last star

No he is saying the story is lacking without the lore, I agree

Me too. If you limit “a story” only to what is happening now then there’s barely any in Battleborn. On the other side the amount of info you get from background, lore and random character banter is massive and it’s an important part of the game.

If you have the time or inclination to read them of course.

Personally I have so little time to game at the mo I just want to play as many as I can fit in. There was another game like this, with hidden story, and those dedicated souls with the time could only say “well the storys there if you bother looking”

If I wanted to read a book I would go and read something that is a book, with better characters, worlds etc like Feist, Jordan or Rothfuss

If you play through certain missions with a certain character, they may say something in addition what would normally be said (i.e. play Toby or Benedict on the Saboteur, or Phoebe on the Algorithm), not to mention you learn a lot about the characters from the standard dialogue that you are given each time. Also, just listening to the characters respond to various events also gives you some insight to their “story”.

Now, if you’re complaining about lore challenges, I personally don’t have a problem with them. It gives me a good reason to play other characters and try out different helix options/mutations to get those. Plus, some of those challenges are no where near as bad as what they used to be.

The game already has plenty of story, just work towards getting the bits you want if you’re that hungry for it… or just go look it up on the wiki if you’re THAT desperate

If the OP is complaining about lore challenges, how is it any different than any other game that has the minutiae of the game’s universe hidden in little out of the way spots and sidequests. If all you do is the main story missions of BL2, you’re going to be missing out on all of the stuff that the lore quests provide in BB. The only difference is that BB locks it behind specific challenges for specific characters rather than allowing you to see all/most of it on a single character (also, it doesn’t happen right in front of you face; you have to actually go read/listen to it; also, there are a lot more characters and a lot more minutiae).

I’m fine with the lore challenges, but that’s because I enjoy learning about characters and seeing how my preconceptions of the characters are different from how they actually are. Alani as she appears is drastically different than Alani’s backstory and lore. I also have no problem with the “lore gating” because there’s a sense of accomplishment, in my mind. I’m fine working for it because it makes me appreciate it more.

I don’t know if they nailed it or not but I like that Battleborn is different. Sure some of the lore is a grind but a lot of it is easy. Part of me would love to see these characters in more of a traditional borderlands kinda rpg shooter, but then I would rather just have bl3.

I applaud new ideas even if not all of them are perfect or even good. The video game industry can be so stale and I would rather not encourage that.
