Political Discussion Thread II

Yeah. That will solve our problems…

Seriously. This "defund police"thing. With the covid and riots in the background. Starting to look like a bad post apocalyptic movie.
Racism, violence and the glorification of power are not “police problems” They’re society problems. I have relatives in the RCMP and let me tell you they feel alone and probably more at loss than we are.
Blaming this or that group. Pointing fingers. Us vs them.
That’s not how we will change things. That’s how we’ll keep it going direction it’s going.

Is that over the current ‘systemic racism in the RCMP’ thing, or more general?

It’s about the current situation.
Mostly.

I agree in that they are society’s problems. However, they seem to be - at least in the US - manifested in policing via discriminatory policing.

Either way, do you all know what today is? Do you remember what happened one year ago today??

First a disclaimer. Feel kinda weird sitting on the other side of the fence.

I don’t think the U.S. cops can claim exclusivity on that. it’s been a long ongoing discussion here on profiling. We had our oopsies too. Especially against “people of different shades” but not solely races.
One thing that came out of it is taking off inquiries on police from police hands. With the creation of the Bureau de Enquête Indépendante. (Independent Inquiries Bureau) Yes, another structure. :man_shrugging:
It’s far from perfect but at least give some appearance of justice in the inquiries.

One funny note about the name is the use of bureau instead of agency. Very unusual here but seem like part of a trend. Some kind of “USA’alisation” of law enforcement . Uniforms and cruisers getting darker. Militarisation of police force…

Ha, yeah I was wondering how you felt about that. IIRC, you have first-hand experience with tear gas…

But yeah, my general impression has been that this isn’t just a US thing, but didn’t wanna tell you how your country was.

My coworkers are going to hate me much more than usual today. Because today, it’s all Gloria all day.

Just finished reading a fuller account of what happened:

I am not sure what to say to all that, other than things obviously escalated badly from what should have been a routine traffic stop.

What is wrong with Bernie? He takes it up the ass for the last two nominations for the Democrats and now this? An important vote and he’s AWOL?

Sen. Sanders has missed 63.2% of votes in the 116th Congress (2019-20)

That was a long time ago, but yeah we discussed it last thread. I almost feel like there was something going on, since multiple Senators who would’ve voted for the amendment didn’t show, including both Sasse and Sanders.

There were actually an amendment in the House which was going to do the same thing as Wyden-Daines, but Schiff got ahold of it and destroyed it in return for allowing it to come to vote, which wound up killing it. Funnily after that one of Trump’s temper tantrums actually helped, since after he threw a fit on Twitter, enough Republicans opposed reauthorization that the bill was withdrawn from consideration.

Oh sorry. That was at the time I started employment with an essential business while my business was closed. So I wasn’t on here during that time. Oops.

Nah, it’s an important issue. Fine to bring it up twice (or more really, I mentioned it a few times to encourage people to contact their reps). Albeit I’m unsure if you’re being sarcastic here I admit.

Haha. Not at all, not being sarcastic. Well, maybe a little. Not all that happy I had to find a job. But, we have opened our doors now and it seems everything is moving in the right direction for some good business.

Stay safe, and don’t get too crowded at once.

Large numbers in small spaces with bad air turnover seem to be the thing to really avoid.

Ok, so I know I’m very anti-video. But, if you were ever to take the time to watch something posted in this thread, now would be a good time.

Wtf.

Oh, you can’t take a 5 min break to watch any one of my vid posts and then you pop up a 30 min one and you expect me to watch it? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

(I’ll watch anything Chappelle.)

Ps. Very moving. Thanks for posting. (No sarc)

Yeah, I kept waiting for the funny, but no. Although I did laugh when he pointed to people in the crowd, “A black and white friend, hanging out together? Hmm, gonna be a quiet ride home.”

Also, if you bought one of those masks with the replaceable air filters on each side for Covid, you might want to hang on to it (and buy replacement filter cartridges).

I was under the impression you weren’t supposed to use those? Or rather I thought the reusable filter ones didn’t work for this purpose. Could be wrong I admit.

You can get N95 with with filter cartridges - the respirator type ones. There’s a specific protocol for changing the cartridges without contaminating the mask itself. Follow that and it’s fine. Screw up and…
