Political Discussion Thread II

You do realize, of course, that Trumpism is now the new normal? It’s only going to get worse. This is why so many Senators and Representatives are such total pricks - these people see the political success that Trump has had so far, and they’re emulating it.

What’s especially bad about this particular brand of political idiocy is that our politicians seem to think they can sow endless discord and division, say whatever they want about the other side, and nothing will happen. Well, as the kids say, “■■■■ around and find out.”

Ooh, I know this one:

H.L. Mencken, amirite?

That’s rather banana republic, isn’t it?

A public that gets told on a near daily basis that it shouldn’t listen to the lamestream fake news which means just about any news that dare to contradict or critisise the pure truth that pours from the mouths of Huckabee Sanders, Spicer, nowadays McEnany or their boss?

Now, don’t think I believe that the other side has somehow a much better track record at being truthful. They’re not much better. But the current climate of eroding any democratic standard is something new.

What he said.

Dear me, they all want to become ra*ist game show hosts?! NOOOOOO!

Remember the issue of the noose in the NASCAR garage that turned out to be a ‘door pull’? NASCAR have released an image of it:

Whoever tied a door pool in that specific way clearly has a sick sense of humour.

Like I said, feeding off emotions.

These are images from 2017 NASCAR “Garage Cam”

The rope with a “noose” on the end is a simple method to pull down the garage door to close it. The noose provides a place to put your hand/wrist when closing the door. Nothing less, nothing more.

Yeah, I dunno - looks like a noose to me, bruh.

I’m not saying that someone put it up as a racist symbol, cause I have no idea who put that there or why. Although VH is probably right - somebody has a sick sense of humor. A gallows type humor if you will.

I do agree with you tho, Sun, when you complain about how the media reported it. Either way, while I’m not a fan of NASCAR, I’m glad that this was apparently some weird ■■■■, and not a racial act or hoax.

According to the article the pull was tied into a noose some time in 2019. Still not a cool thing to do.

Don’t tie your fishhook with one of these knots. Someone might get the wrong idea. XD

Yes, indeed. Lets see how that plays out for him, Cotton!

I know what you were going for, but it still reminded me of the senator, who I frankly despise. Or rather more pointedly he’s an example of what we discussed before.

Why go for solidarity, caring about each other or plain humanism when one can just apply to the following pavlovian reactions:

  • it’s from Obama, so it is obviously evil.
  • why should I pay for someone else’s healthcare?

The human emetic strikes again…

Side note, for those interested. I thought the quoted part was particularly on point.

For Democrats who clamor for Joe Biden to get out there and campaign, to be more visible, to launch an aggressive agenda, the reality is that every day he stays close to home and mostly out of the news is a day he is closer to being president of the United States. The current president is running against himself and losing.

I never quite understood back then why he mentioned Fifth Avenue, but I think I do now.

Not sure I agree with the conclusion, but posting just cause. Kinda fits my overall political mood.

We all place a lotta blame (rightfully so) on the two major US parties rigging the system in their favor, but we continue to support that system with our votes. We don’t have to vote for these people.

The lesser of two evils is still evil, no?

Really encapsulates the two-party dilemma though, doesn’t it?

Absolutely. I think we’re collectively afraid to NOT vote either GOP or Democratic. -arranges tinfoil- It’s almost like the electorate isn’t actually a free people.

Dude, your rationality is still showing. Let me demonstrate.

-Ahem-

Freedom is an illusion perpetrated on us by those who have surreptitiously taken control to keep us docile while we are fleeced for their profit and amusement.

On the one hand, it almost reminds me of the equivalent of a My First Election toy. On the other, it is admittedly a depressing point. Really though? It’s like saying that if we all just treated each other well we wouldn’t need money, or guns, or… you get the idea.

Unfortunately people are irrational, ignorant, and easily manipulated. Thus the electoral system that props up the two parties is more important than the two parties themselves.

Damn I sound grumpy this morning.

Morning all. I’m still not quite ready to rejoin the fray but came across this fascinating article about a recent backlash against skin whitening products in India and Africa.

I’m very familiar with the embedded “colourism” in India, particularly how it’s perpetuated by Bollywood, but I didn’t realize how endemic it has become over the last decades. It barely touches on Africa, but it claims 40% of women bleach their skin. Makes me wonder how widespread this is in other countries.
