Political Discussion Thread

I read that article last night - thanks for the link. Republican-Democrats and Democrats who became the Republicans? Crazy stuff. There is a theory that the situation in which a country was formed has a large part in shaping its subsequent character. Which might explain a lot…

The discrepancy between the Senate and House has really shot through the roof this last month. This has gone past the already odd divergence of polls we were seeing earlier to such an extent that the most probable result may very well be the two bodies moving in opposite directions. Unusual to say the least, and more so when you consider how much the House may move.

I’ll say it’s a mistake only because she’s a politician. And an experience one.
Otherwise it’s only a bad joke and that’s because the “politically correct sjw” said so. I know. I’ve been part of their organistions for quite some time.
Honestly. I wouldn’t have any problem if a Chinese or Indian guy/gal said all (white) Quebecers look the same.
I understand the “democratic” bias (I rather call it a socialist bias) and yes it’s something we need to be aware of. Using clips out of context is far from being a mainstream media exclusivity. You see it a lot more on “independent” media.

Happy Halloween to all my political friends (all of perhaps one of you) and my adversaries (the rest of you)! Enjoy your evenings and stay reasonably safe!

What with the troops being deployed to the border and a lot of what He has said, I’m seeing a real bad picture brewing. Given how He’s so terrified of Muslims and immigrants, I’m almost expecting him to call for rolling the hardware.

I take the view that it’s more playing to his ego, but I have to admit it doesn’t exactly fill me with joy. In pointed fact it makes me wonder if something will go wrong more than anything else.

It’s hard to see things not going wrong if a thousand (or more) migrants show up determined to cross the border with armed troops on the other side.

Talking of the ~7k person caravan coming up, there was an interesting take on why they’re leaving yesterday:

It’s not just that corruption, civil war, and gang violence is taking its toll; erratic weather is playing havoc with crops, and people don’t have enough to eat. This is only going to get worse.

“If you keep treating people like pariahs, they’re sure as hell going to act like pariahs.” - Tom Clancy, Patriot Games

Kind of sums up our international relationships in general right now.

“This is only going to get worse.” Would probably be the most succinct summary of why to worry about climate change in general that I’ve ever read.

That was one of my favorite segments from the newsroom. They had an environmental scientist on and he was just… broken on air.

Extra points for Toby from the office.

I’m honestly unsure what alternative there is. I don’t know, but I’ll assume, that the Border Patrol doesn’t have the manpower to prevent several thousand people from just coming across. Hence, the military.

Does definitely make me nervous tho. I’d rather not see anyone get hurt, but if the migrants refuse to go to ports of entry to apply for asylum, and instead insist on crossing wherever illegally, well, the results won’t be good. For anybody.

If both the migrants and US law enforcement both follow the law and have some patience, every single migrant will have a chance to plead their case. Hopefully that’s how it goes.

In that article I linked, I think I remember reading that the majority expect to apply for asylum, but some (the young men, mostly - qu’elle surprise) have indicated that they’d try and jump the border regardless.

The biggest issue I can see is people keeping their calm under what could be very trying circumstances. I would not want to be one of those working the border there.

Me neither. Also wouldn’t want to be a migrant trying to come here for a better life, and be turned away at the border.

Especially after walking all that way…

Regarding the guys that knelt, Trump said “get that son-of-a-b*** off the field”. Given that it’s a girl this time, I’m expecting him to say it, almost like

Anyone notice how Trump has a thing about arming people?:

Wtf…:

Ha, arming people is one of the things I agree with him on. I wouldn’t require anyone to carry; however, if a teacher or synagogue attendee wishes to be armed, I say go 'head. Just be careful who you shoot, please. But I assume all y’all already knew I’d write that…

HAPPY FRIDAY!

I tend to the opinion that, if folks are to be armed around schools etc., that this should be restricted to those who have already demonstrated the ability to stay focussed and use their weapon effectively in a live fire situation. Of course, I’d be even happier to live some place where you never ever had to worry about people going into schools with guns in the first place…

Anyway, yes, happy friday.

Yeah, can’t really say I disagree with mandating a lot of training for a teacher who wanted to carry.

If we take Oregon as an example it’s less relevant either way than most people would think. We have a generally low homicide rate, and a lower gun violence rate, but one of the most permissive concealed carry laws on the books. Which includes carrying in schools.

Admittedly it just generally doesn’t come up much, but from recollection it did help in a situation last year. That was however in a mall rather than a school. Albeit I can only recall one school shooting here, though it was unnervingly close by.

I’d still argue it’s a better idea than not, but I don’t think it addresses the root problems.
