Political Discussion Thread

… Those two posts are probably the most British things I’ve ever seen you write.

Alisher Uzmanov’s yacht is worth US$600m. His frickin’ BOAT has more value than the GDP of some countries.

Ok my envy may be at least partly about the money.

But you’re right. It’s not exactly the money but rather the ability to transcend society.

I realised today that Robert Mueller is entirely cemented in my mind with the mysterious G-Man character from Half-Life.

Given that both appear to model themselves (sartorially at least) on the stereotype behind that term it’s probably not especially creative. Nevertheless, it means that the fabled Mueller report has now become the political equivalent of Half-Life 3 for me. Its authors are enigmatic, lots of people wanted it to arrive a long time ago, so much hope has been pinned on its content and quality that it’s unlikely to deliver, and there are grievances with the group it comes from, but you’ve glimpsed a certain stolid genius behind the project so far which suggests there’s just this small chance it might be an orgasmic experience when it does arrive. (Aren’t the best of those worth waiting for? … No, actually. I have stuff to do).

I don´t know how, but could someone forward this to Robert Mueller please?!

Such a shame he’s not on twitter

Also I’ll confess I didn’t intend a post about Mueller to end on that note. I mean I respect the guy’s shirt choices but he’s no Michael Cohen.

WHY DO SO MANY PEOPLE ASK PRESIDENTS TO SIGN BIBLES WTF

So… Thoughts on whether May’s new fig leaf is enough to bring in the ERG?

This was about a little fantasy called “Cascadia” : a new country on the west coast. Some might like to think this is slightly closer to being viable.

California, Washington and Oregon have taken their first steps to getting a bill to Congress to permanently remain in daylight savings time.
And while BC’s Premier hasn’t any plans to pursue it, some think there would be sufficient pressure if the above three states get their respective legislation passed.
“We’ll watch what’s happening in California and see if it moves forward.” (statement from the Premier’s office).

All this is of little consequence but I thought it was slightly interesting.

My guess is that those are old-school believers. They want to test if the president’s hand decays or burns when he touches the bible…

It’s B-Day again guys!!! I shall be cheering for the impending reassertion of British sovereignty while simultaneously hoping my brother can still get insulin in three weeks’ time. :uk: :confetti_ball:

Referring to the vote? Honestly I have no idea where this goes. May and Corbyn both seem opposed to a second referendum, but I don’t think there’s actually a straight majority for ‘soft’ Brexit.

I wouldn’t be surprised if no deal was ruled out, and an extension asked for, but even that I’m not sure of.

So it goes…

Yes.

The whole thing right now is like being asked to choose your method of execution. Sure, there’s a distasteful logic in plumping for the deal that delays the big decisions on time and place and also provides a safeguard against having it done by being slowly torn apart by hungry cats. But meanwhile nobody seems to care that all this could be avoided because the court’s decision is entirely non-binding and the evidence the jury heard was full of lies.

Sorry, I retreat into metaphor during periods of despair.

Quite alright. Clearly something wrong with me anyways given how obsessed I am with politics, so I’m not in a position to complain over how you deal with it.

Yeah though, this whole bit of political theatre is distasteful. May’s response on it prior to the vote came across as… deluded at best.
