Political Discussion Thread

Well. That was a fast topic switch. I admit to being mildly impressed.

Now that’s a new take on ye olde “my kingdom for a horse”.

Forgive me, I just had a funny thought about (ahem) picking fights with dead men…
Everyone jokes about it, but this man(iac) might be fighting a zombie apocalypse, even if it isn’t real out here.

“…report on US security threat of car imports”? I think I’ve seen this movie:

I am the most electrifying man in political shitposting. Can you HEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR what Arsonist is boiling?

Sorry. Private server is down. Hopefully killing all of 5 minutes so i can finish up… a lot of ■■■■.

Anyway, what are we talkin bout? Trump sucks? Yeah. He… he still does.

Um… Brexit also sucks…

Oh!

I did decide I was going to start arguing about how great Johto’s healthcare system is in facebook arguments until someone called me out.

Note to self: someone tell that president that “The Walking Dead” is not a documentary of current events.

Concerning new tariffs: “he thinks that this is a genius economic dealmaking strategy against foreign countries” Yeah right, that always works pretty well :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I think that documentary about foreign cars you mentioned also shows strategies for dealing with evil foreign cars hiding in deserts… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I hope the tangerine trauma didn’t see this one, he might get ideas

Hopefully the awfulness of it - and I really can’t describe in words how bad it is - will make Trump seem a little less insane.

I’ll be honest, politically Mueller and his orgasmic hope is what’s keeping me going right now.

We’ve talked about this, it really, really doesn’t. But hey, Schadenfreude is pleasure, so have fun with that.

I actually knew a guy who was a member of one. They’d go for days out on their Harley Davidsons, checking out gardens and stopping off at quaint tea shops. (Seriously - I am not making this up!)

It was a super weirdly specific comedy trope in the 90s…

Apparently, George Conway was called “a total loser”…:

My observation is that if the incumbent US president calls you that, it almost certainly means you’re doing something RIGHT.

Edit:

So, he says he’s sorry and realises that what he did was wrong, but makes no mention of why he did it. That was the plea hearing; maybe more will come out in the sentencing hearing?

Michael Bay is the greatest threat to national security intelligence known.

Otherwise, this floodgate that’s opened - citizens threatening public officials - is a significant concern. Now every slightly disenfranchised redneck with access to bomb-making/chemicals/firearms feels it is more and more acceptable to act on it. The deeper the political schism, the more extreme the public reaction.

My tinfoil hat is buzzing with fears that this is being manipulated. Much like @MickityMike said regarding Trump’s deafening barrage of tweets.

Concerning the access to firearms, that would be about every single one?
These are the moments in which I am slightly afraid that the US will suffer a permanent change regarding the tone in politics and, more scary, the probability of attacks against public officials.

@Hattie - I don’t know much about the author (Monbiot) other than you giving me the  last time I posted something of his. Is he, by any chance, an additional data point to prove his own thesis here?

It is conceivable that it might not be every single one. I mean, guns are available, but they do cost money. The people that can’t afford them may have inherited some, and in those cases they could be little more than pretty antiques. However, even with that possibility, I am still under the impression that your, and most rational people that aren’t gung ho about guns, concerns are valid. It is far too easy to procure assault grade armaments in the US in some places (NY and NJ for example have some very stringent gun regulations, while in Florida there are very few regulations), and the possibility that someone lacking the ability to think rationally might take something personally and do something that everyone would regret is quite real.

I like the NY Times, and their digital platform is well executed, but they just reminded me to turn off their notifications with this gem.

I hate to get the notification ring and look only to get my blood pressure raised by these little tidbits.

I don’t remember that lol. I recall riposting to an article you posted which tried to claim industrialised farming is a benefit to the ecosystem with one of his… I always read his environmental commentary with interest - he’s an unsentimental defender of the natural world - and have respect for that work.Out of the Wreckage is worth looking at.

I don’t always see eye to eye with him politically (though I don’t keep up with his column religiously), but can’t say I disagree much with that argument. Have I told everyone here to read Timur Vermes’ Look Who’s Back? It gets to a similar point. Don’t watch the film though, it’s atrocious.

You don’t need guns or money to be harmful to society.
At the most mundane level, look at a junior hockey game. This is probably the most pathetic example of people dividing a hard line between themselves. Parents screaming at their kids, the other kids, the coach, the ref and getting into fist fights (or knife fights - for real) with the opposing team’s fans/parents. A microcosm, but a scary one.

Also, 9/11 : there were plenty of reports of Sikhs getting assaulted the day after. People don’t even care (or understand) that these people aren’t Muslim. All you need is your voice and a tire iron.

More harm can be done with a computer anyways. So literally everyone can participate.
