Political Discussion Thread

Also query to any US peeps who voted - how many candidates do you have to vote for? I hear rumours of incredibly long ballot papers, and the possibility of just ticking all of them at once according to party.

In the UK it’s quite hard to find out a complete list of who’s standing until you’re standing in the ballot paper (there are usually some surprises… local people running for “the party Party”) but you rarely have to vote for more that 2 or 3 things.

I couldn’t recall the exact count on mine, Google gave 17 positions based on my address from national to state and county. My residence isn’t in a city proper or I would have had more. Also this time I didnt have any school bonds or MUD stuff (municipal utility district, local authority for things like water services) which is unusual

water services? You guys have elections for everything!

Haha, it’d be more things like a municipal bond for local improvements or some such

We dont actually vote to keep the water flowing :stuck_out_tongue:

Lol, I assumed that (that would be too dangerous) :stuck_out_tongue: Even so that’s minute electoral process. We have MPs, and then local councilors (who do all the stuff like water, town planning, local infrastructure etc), and that’s pretty much it. There’s also the European Parliament elections of course, though not for much longer. And I think you can elect ‘Police and Crime Commissioner heads’ though I’ve forgotten what they do, and the elections are held at a different time. It’s a lot simpler!

At this point the spectacle of it all is so entrenched we wouldn’t be able to go low key on elections if we wanted.

Bear in mind also that this is just here in Texas, which is bigger than France, and home of ~30 million. My county alone has a population of over 4 million so there’s a considerable amount of governance to be done even at the local level. Things are very likely managed differently elsewhere

Always bear in mind that the common maps of the globe you see are warped to make Europe look a lot bigger than it actually is. Like, seriously, look it up and just look at the sheer size of other continents. Just to make @FunkJunkie’s point even more pronounced than it likely is right now.

Hehe. Make America bigly again!

Then make Britain euro again!!

I’m not gonna lie, there’s a part of me which hopes you guys will elect Trump so we don’t have to feel so ashamed of Brexit

Looking at my ballot I’m seeing…

  1. President/Vice President

  2. State Senator

  3. Governor/Lt. Governor

  4. Attorney General

  5. Superintendent of Public Instruction

  6. State Representative for Congress #1.

  7. State Senator for District.

  8. State Representative for Congress #2.

  9. County Circuit Court Clerk

  10. County Auditor

  11. County Recorder

  12. County Treasurer

  13. County Coroner

  14. County Surveyor

  15. County Commissioner for this district

  16. County Commissioner for that district

  17. County Council, At Large

  18. OMG THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE RUNNING FOR SCHOOL BOARD(3 slots open)

Higher up levels of government were typically 2 choices, sometimes 3.

Lower you got(for me at least) it was more varied. Some were uncontested, some were very contested.

Headed home, time for bedlam

I.e. drunk election results? I’m listening to it on UK radio right now - as my second screen was stolen I’m just to one and I want to play Borderlands 2 too atm. Might put CNN on later.

Really just the whole ■■■■ show, the alcohol is just there to keep my mind limber enough not to snap

And sorry to hear your stuff was pilfered, may the perpetrator be fed to wild dogs…slowly

I’m one of those bleeding heart lefty socialists, FunkJunkie, I have already forgiven the thief (likely a junkie themselves) in light of their evidently unfortunate life and hope they will be gently rehabilitated into a better life when and if they’re picked up. Though I would probably smack them first. :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh I’d never really wish such a thing on a person :stuck_out_tongue:
Still irks me when people I think are cool are wronged
Oh yeah…
