Political Discussion Thread

Walkout happened too, though it’s more that the news only hit today (it actually occurred yesterday). Yeah though, at the least it gets the attention of a lot of people who might otherwise not have noticed what was going on over there. That said, Blizzard’s actions were extraordinarily stupid even for their position.

Especially with their position.

I could see things getting reversed with two lawmakers on board, but I’m still pretty cynical about any long term changes.

Unfortunately I’m plagued (well, burdened) with the same thing regards pretty much any political or financial juggernaut too. China protests, climate change protests, etc - they all look nice but they’re really not exposing any chinks in any armour. I really try to allow optimism a fighting chance against cynicism but my optimism is that excited dog that’s staked out on the lawn and chokes itself after reaches the leash’s limit.

Finally, I get to post a DND meme to this thread.

I can actually give good news about beliefs against long term changes! Honestly, this one has a lot of examples of things actually going the publics way. From tobacco regulations to marjuana legalization, this does in fact happen. Not quickly, and not inevitably (no matter how it looks in hindsight), but it happens. Further, climate change is an issue where significant movement has in fact occurred. Not enough, but some. The Paris agreement did happen, Americans hit an inflection point where the majority admit it exists years ago, and political positions in favor of more action have jumped massively.

Democracy may be suffering from a lot of problems, but massive public pressure has had a good track record, and I expect it to continue to work in the future. Just don’t overestimate what it’s capable of, or how fast it works.

Well I suppose I will concede quite a few societal wins. Monsanto getting torn limb from limb is pretty damn satisfying too. Montgomery, Alabama getting its first black mayor (yesterday). The Pope talking about letting priests marry (in a desperate attempt to get them to stop with the buggery, although I doubt he said as much).

Anyways, dizzying times. Sure makes me wish I could just hover above it rather than having to scrape and claw along with everyone else though.

Well at least Blizzard is handling it well-

Decided to check into mmo-champion.com for the first time in years to see how they were handling it.

The short answer is they’re not.

Forums have occasional posts with people pointing out the shittiness and anyone still involved with WoW (lol) or the other games mmo-champ supports is going the hard line to suck every last drop out of blizz dick.

“SJW’s better not ruin the convention I paid to go to.”

“Anyone with half a brain knows why they did this. There’s an internal discussion going on I bet but it’ll blow over in a week.”

“They’re not really blocking account authentication and if they are it makes sense but I guess watch out for european laws.”

I on the other hand learned that Russia apparently dug a nearly eight mile hole. It took me a while to remember why I was reading up on that (and then various other discussions of the deepest points in the earth).

Russian trolls.

Edit : That was synchronicity Temet. Tomorrow they will wonder if I was responding to you or to Ars ; or in a stroke of ABSOLUTE GENIUS, both of you.

This is my favorite quote from my reading so far tonight-

“Do you really think Blizzard is like a superhero and needs to fight for the people and change the regime in Hong Kong? They have a responsibility to their players to provide their services to as many gamers as possible, and that sometimes means bending to the will of the people in charge (lootboxes in some EU states, censoring blood/skeletons in Chinese games etc). When a Chinese player gets home and wants to play some Hearthstone, do you , hink if this led to Blizz trying to be the “good guys” and saying “FU CHINA” and getting banned, do you really think that would make those millions of players happy? Gaming is an amazing way to escape the harsh reality, and you want to take that away from people…you guys are just as bad as the Chinese government, LOL.”

Like.

Imagine being that ■■■■■■■ deluded.

How… does this person get through life?

You do you Ars. That said, I’m more pissed just from reading that. Also, I’m pretty sure they get through life fine, delusion is a major life skill unfortunately.

It feels like there has to be some diminishing returns though.

This feels like the kind of person who looks at their cheerios in the morning, studies the message, and then comes to the conclusion that hitler wanted to be a ballerina.

That’s pretty chilling and rather surreal to read. Unbelievable.

Sadly, it’s all too believable. The attempted military coup in Turkey a couple of years ago was one of those few coup attempts that I wish had succeeded.

The damage is done, and will likely continue. However, there’s no reason why they should remain in NATO, especially when one NATO ‘ally’ is attacking the allies of another NATO nation.

Been reading this guy for years now. (Way before he started blogging at PJ Media - yes, yes, cue the groans.) He had a lot of the insurgency stuff in Iraq nailed way before it was common knowledge, regarding the insurgents and how they were resupplying, bringing in more fighters, etc. Anyhoo, interesting concept here and worth a quick read.
