Political Discussion Thread

:ireland: :ballot_box: continues

I suspect no one here is invested in this like me but it’s the WEIRDEST feeling watching an absolutely extraordinary election count in which you have no personal preference. I’m basically filled with nervous energy. It was a lot easier watching Trump and Brexit.

The most concerning thing is Gerry Adams has started growing his hair long and wearing Celtic-style jumpers and is thus looking increasingly like my dad :grimacing:

How much longer is Gerry feckin Adams going to be a figure in Irish politics? Forever? Or just an eternity?

Well, he’s no longer a TD as of this election (retired), but I suspect he will remain active in politics. And, given that a security services report in 2015 concluded that the PIRA’s Army Council still ā€˜oversees’ and provides ā€˜overarching strategy’ for Sinn FĆ©in… I think it’s fair to say that

I confessed to my dad that I’d detected a resemblance between the two, and he denied vehemently that he’s ever been in the IRA or ordered any murders. But then, so does Adams, so I don’t know what to believe.

Talking of Irish Politics, this caught my eye today:

Haha yeah, I saw an interview with her today after O’Sullivan scooped a seat too, she looked very relieved

I mean, by no means do my wife and I agree on everything political, but Jaysus Mary and Joseph I can’t imagine running AGAINST each other.

I be drifting off to sleep at night like :eyes:

In Uncle Joe’s defense (I know - ā€˜things Mickity will never say’), the clip of him saying it sounds much more benign than reading about him saying it.

Either way, he’s done. And honestly, at this point, it’s just sad. He’s just a lonely old man now who talks about how he once debated Paul Ryan. Seriously, Joe, just enjoy retirement, buddy.

Some people just shouldn’t be given microphones. (Or cell phones, for that matter, but that’s currently the other party’s problem.)

Not sure I agree he’s done. I mean, I think you’re probably right, but I’m not going to be certain on that one till I see more evidence given the mess of Iowa (the AP still won’t call the race, despite the IDP awarding delegates). Regardless, remember that he’s still polling close to the top nationally, and even if we don’t vote nationally that still shows a lot more support than someone who could normally be counted out entirely.

Now if he craters in New Hampshire today, then I might actually agree. I’d still be kind of cautious through Super Tuesday though.

Can we have a rule that no grandpas are allowed to run for President

I sense a strange disturbance in the Force, as if Pete Buttigieg and Tulsi Gabbard just started to really like @Hattie …

Pete seems good, he speaks languages and likes poetry so he’d have my vote!

Assessment criteria in applications for leader of the Republic of Hat:
— Likes poetry
— No grandpas
— No murderers (even if they were before 1994)
— All political symbols on campaign literature to be replaced with cat pictures :cat2:
— Clean shaven preferred.

Anyway, speaking of things that politicians probably shouldn’t say, this one got some traction over here

Well, New Hampshire doesn’t seem to have dropped the ball so far. Some weird results though. Late Klobuchar surge has her in third, Biden may not break 10% in the final results (he’s in fifth!), and Yang just dropped out while results were being counted. Honestly, Sanders seems like the main beneficiary here.

Yeah, I’ve watched it now and completely agree. It was obviously a joke and I think the woman he was talking to laughed? Seems kind of unfair to take this one out of context.

Also, Biden clearly has poetry in his soul as that was a fascinatingly vivid but surreal image. And apparently he claimed it was from an old John Wayne movie? That no one has been able to source?!

Ach, I don’t support his campaign, but it pains me that this would be the (a) rock that sinks him!

Obviously, I’m not a fan of Democratic politics in general or Joe Biden specifically. However, it’s like watching someone develop senility in public, and it’s a little sad. He’s trying desperately to generate some sort of interest, but no one cares. Barack won’t endorse him, nobody seems to want him around, but there he is. Getting laughs (and lotsa twitter ridicule) with weird references to movies made in the 1950s fer feck sakes.

Yeah… I’d be very happy to have him as a grandpa, but, grandpas shouldn’t run for President.

Prophecy Time!

And that  is why he won’t be the Dem candidate when the primaries are through.

Biden already pointed out that Bill Clinton back in 1992 didn’t win a state before Georgia. But in fact, Clinton finished 2nd in New Hampshire with 24.78 %, 3rd in South Dakota, 2nd in Colorado etc. For now, Biden can’t match those figures.

Uhm, the DNC for his great name recognition?

Good point. Biden was presented as the top Dem candidate for a while now, but there is a chance that the electorate is less impressed with grandpa than his friends in the close-to-retirement age…

Now one gets to read stuff like this:

The treasurer of a pro-Biden super PAC, Larry Rasky, is warning donors of a ā€œdoomsday scenarioā€ if Biden is not the nominee.

ā€œJoe Biden is the first front runner never to be fully resourced. You can change that and it needs to happen soon. Bernie could come rolling out of New Hampshire with too much steam to be stopped by anyone but Joe. And Mike offers a faulty safety valve.ā€

Are you kidding me? Would you kindly wake up and get it through your head that the main point this year may not be to keep Sanders from office, but to get Trump out of said office? I’d be ever so grateful.
