i totally hear you, i really do i promise and i feel your pain, but retailers will do whatever they want, they could sell it for a 0.01 if they really wanted
Oooo, I know.
BRINK
…that did not end well.
That game had so much potential that it still hurts to think about it.
Man you have no idea. I think I was one of the last players.
In the states that is referred to as resale price maintenance and is legal to a certain point, but this tends to make non-fungible products extremely non-competitive as it restricts the seller. It also must be within some REALLY super strict guidelines.

There is one case in question, as it has even hit appellate courts as to whether this violates the anti-trust act and the cases were being heard as early as 2007.
As a bit of a legal precedent much of these sales or Black Friday pricing are available as early as a week before and after.
The largest outlet location retailer in NY Woodbury Commons, have Black Friday pricing on many of their stores, but do not advertise aspects of it simply to remain competitive on the day.
Here is an article on video game pricing.
As a business owner I can set any price I please, if a company would “suggest” a price to me it actually violates certain laws so far as it comes to liquor.
How do you know it isn’t a common practice in the video game industry? Check the prices of a 2 year old game which hasn’t been touched as Gamestop.
Also, you have to recognize that many of these companies want relative global congruency in pricing. It can’t be perfect, but seeing as many countries have 100% strict anti-trust laws (by penalty of as much as imprisonment) a company seeking to compete globally will not be attempting to haggle on price fixes on a nation to nation basis.
These pricing situations are way more complicated and have almost NOTHING to do with a developer of a game. And by almost nothing, I mean zilch.
Im more annoyed because I couldn’t afford digital deluxe so I bought original version, but now dig deluxe is on sale, but I can’t warrant buying the same game twice within a month, especially since I really want those exclusive taunts.
Interesting read.
You got me more curious so decided to check into it some more and I found this…
It’s concerning msrp and map.
Apparently a manufacturer cannot tell a retailer what they can sell an item for but they can tell them what they can advertise for. That must be what I see going on black Friday and other major discount times.
This was only a sale on Amazon. Steam and everywhere else I checked seems to be the original prices. And I think it was a mistake to have the Digital deluxe at $40 (same price as the standard) because I just recently went back to check the price and the deluxe is now at $54.99. So it’s now $40 for standard and $54.99 deluxe on Amazon
Actually I just left GameStop, they are selling the base game for $40 now and I believe bestbuy is doing the same.
Right on, thanks for sharing. I think the main concern for everyone though was the deluxe being $40, so as long as that’s fixed I’m sure people won’t mind as much.
No problem. I wouldnt be surprised that by next week the box stores will discount or throw in the season pass for free.
This price drop looks more like “liquidation.”
Good find definitely.
I can show you the book of restrictions we received from the SLA and a few other entities when we put out our first adverts (speaking about my shop here).
Gearbox develops the game.
2k Publishes it.
But the party you’re purchasing it from sets the price.
And that is very often dependent on physical asset/commodity vs. intellectual properties, turnover expectations, time of year and sales etc. etc.
I bought my friend a special edition of ESO for his birthday (with explorers pack) which went for less than the line option…
At the same retailer.
Im on team “little annoyed”.
I’ve never seen a game go 50% off in 3 weeks. Even November releases only see 10$ off on black Friday.
I don’t make much money, but I can afford a game every month or so. I shelled out for deluxe, and do love the game (92 hours), but this sale really “tipped my teabags”.
Their next release will not be a preorder for me, but I will most likely buy it at a later time on sale.
I can’t be mad at something that might instill mouth to mouth help to a game which I like - a game which is in the genre that pretty much demands a large player base.
At this point, I would always go for the bigger picture and even if they gave out copies on the street for free along with a big mac to boost the pick up rate for those who are only interested in the free big mac - I would welcome that as something that might push 4-5k people on steam to a higher number and make people at least try the game and see whether they like it or not.
This game needs players WAY more than any patch, balance, variety etc.
Sigh, ok. So a farmer needs workers to plow his fields. He goes into town and offers to pay a day’s wages for a day’s work. So he hires some workers and they get to work. A few hours go by and the farmer decides he needs more manpower to finish on time, to he goes back into town now offering to pay a day’s wages for half a day’s work. He finds some more workers and they join the first group. At the end of the day, the farmer is handing out each man’s wages and the someone from the first group asks “why are they getting paid the same wages for half the work? That’s not fair!” The farmer replies “you thought my offer was fair when I gave it to you. Why is it unfair now? Did I not pay you what we agreed upon?”
You agreed to pay $60 for Battleborn when you bought it. At the time, you felt that $60 was a fair price for the game, and you agreed to pay it. So please, explain to me how this is unfair.
If it increases the player base, I’m all for it. Even if I knew in advance that it would be half price, I would pay the full price. Partially because of impatience, but mainly to support Gearbox on this amazing game.
says same price on steam for me?
Yep.
If the game sold 500k on each platform during launch week you wouldn’t see this “sale” by any means.
Even at launch, I didn’t pay full price for the game or season pass. That was the only reason I pre-ordered…since it wasn’t full price.
Ugh I’m so tired of reading complaint after complaint. I personally saved the receipt for Battleborn just in case I wanted to return it because I didn’t like it. However, I love the game! Whenever you buy something NEW, especially a game, you are taking the risk of spending more money on something than if you waited until it was older.
