So, I pre-loaded the beta last week when it became available. I have the game titled ‘Battleborn Open Beta’ in my library.
When I tried to play it, steam went through it’s usual ‘starting for first time’ shtick, then it went to download something along the lines of ‘Gearboxredists’. While it was downloading, I kept getting pop-ups from Microsoft C++ that, unless I tried to do anything with it, would stop the progress of the installation.
So, I did all that, and now when I try to play Battleborn, it just say that it’s running, then it just quits out. As in, a small window, about the size of the window that displays the ‘first time setup’ message, pops up momentarilly, and then it just quits.
Anyone know why this is happening?
Moved to the bug report section.

It’s possible this was a side effect of a missing executable. If you’re still experiencing the issue, restart Steam. It should update then and you should be good to go.
I tried that before, and it didn’t work. I decided to delete the local content and try again. If it doesn’t work, I’ll task manager it and close steam like that.
It’s still not working. Are there any other causes.

Does the C++ window give you the option to “Repair”?
It doesn’t pop up anymore. It popped up when I was trying to play the game when it was pre-loaded, but not after I redownloaded it.

So it seems fixed at this point?
No, the game still refuses to play. When I click play, it says that it’s running, but then shortly after, the message goes away and nothing happens

Ah ok, sorry. I can see where I misread your post.
Are you getting any kind of error messaging?

Nope. The closest thing I get to an error message is that little window that pops up when you’re starting a game on steam for the first time, but it closes out almost immediately, so even if it was an error message, I wouldn’t be able to read it.

Ok, one more question before I escalate this to our team: have you verified the integrity of the game cache?

No, I have not. I will try that, then report back

Ok, great.
In the meantime, looping in @sssmg for visibility and possibly some insights.

I verified the integrity of the game caches, and it does not appear to have worked.
Bugger.
It tried to open some MASSIVE “Gearbox Sub Installer” thing, which basically just tried to install a bunch of different versions of Microsoft Visual C++ and some other stuff, all of which I already had installed, a few of them even with NEWER version lol…
Cmon Gearbox - at least do a scan to see if we NEED to install these. It wouldn’t even let me continue until I went through the “Repair” option on each of them… >_<

Ok, thanks for trying that. Sorry it’s not working. I’m going to monitor this thread for a short time and give @sssmg sometime to see it. We’ll revisit shortly. Thank you guys for your patience!

Okay, I seem to have found a solution. Redownloading the C++ thing at THIS LINK: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30679# should fix the issues, but I would prefer the issue to not happen in the first place, and have it fixed before launch.

Hey devs and players,
I just wanted everyone to know I was having an issue similar to Kobold1011, except I wasn’t even getting a dialogue box from C++.
I had previously installed the game and it took me through a bunch of C++ Redistributable 2012 installations. At one point, it gave me an error that I had a newer version installed (And I did, I had 2015) but allowed me to continue if I dismissed the error. So naturally, I did.
The game launched, and everything was fine and dandy, until I got in-game. Then it lasted about 10 seconds before immediately crashing, saying for a brief second “A fatal error has occurred” and then crashed immediately.
So, naturally I tried to start the game again. I’d just click “play” on Steam, and the game wouldn’t even start. It’d say for about half a second that I’m playing the Battleborn Beta, then stop.
So I figured it was something wrong with my C++. So I used CCleaner to wipe all of the versions of C++ I had that were newer than 2012. I verified the integrity of the game cache, neither worked. I reinstalled, that didn’t’ work either.
Luckily Kobold’s fix worked. I’m now able to get ingame and play with no apparent problems.
I’m thankful Gearbox has the opportunity to fix this in the beta, so when the full game comes out we won’t have this problem (hopefully.) I and 2 of my friends are debating between this and Overwatch to play together.
PS: The “support” link on Battleborn’s website is totally broken.
