aww I was also going to grind one character and earn all the skins. too bad.
This is, after all, a BETA Test.
I am totally shocked that the game works as well as does.
My last big game was Fallout 4 which had the kind of Opening that I am sadly used to seeing in AAA Titles these days.
Serious credit goes to Gearbox for such an extensive BETA and for keeping it a BETA, server wipe and all.
This whole experience is less about us enjoying the Game and more about them seeing if, upon release, the Servers spontaneously explode, raining down Hamster Parts for miles in all directions while all of their Official Mods are eaten by hordes of Carnivorous Forum Trolls.
Mind you, I fully expect those things to happen anyway, but just to a lesser degree than without the BETA.
Finally somebody gets it. I’d buy you a beer, JOrifice, but funds are a little tight this month. Have a like instead.
Don’t worry, I can buy him a beer =)
I will say, though, this beta is definitely a server stress test which was apparent on the PS4 where there were issues getting in on day one, but it’s also a marketing strategy. By providing access to everyone for a week(ish), 2K can drive pre-order sales. The biggest issue with pre-orders is that purchasers are not always guaranteed to get a product which matches the one they agreed to purchase before the fact. Often people buy games based on E3 videos or impressions of people who went to PAX, but this could be around a year out from the game’s actual release. A lot can change in a year people!
What is great about the way 2K and Gearbox are doing it, we are getting a part of a pretty much complete game. We are seeing what the game will be on release, and that’s huge! Also, everyone is freely available to check it out this weekend. I have been able to convince quite a few friends who were resigned to just get Overwatch to check the game out and just from spending a few hours in it, they decided to pre-order. It’s huge when a game can do that and Gearbox knows their product is that solid. Also, deciding to hold off balancing on El Dragon, Phoebe, and Ghalt until the open beta was sly, as it gives us a view that they are quick to make necessary balance changes based on feedback (even though they knew they needed to be fixed from the early access, haha).
All of the characters have two ways of unlocking them, ether A leveling up or B completing a relatively easy challenge : most of which you can unlocked by playing the story mode missions.
Worst case scenarios : Phoebe = 50 player kills.(2-5 ish matches depending on how you do) Galilae = 800 minion kills (3-4 matches if you play defensively) and Ghalt / Kleese = high ish levels or complete all the story missions.
I don’t mind the progress reset at all, since I can unlock ISIC just by beating Algorithm.
Goodbye rank 43.
Dunno about the other platforms, but those of us who hit up the beta on ps4 will get the new character unlocked when she is released. So that there was a nice little thing.
I will miss the most awesome loadout I had for Orendi; including a legendary that gave all my abilities friggin splash damage, but I know where to look for it so it’s not an absolute loss. Plus I got crap from the Commander chests every 5 levels. Skins for people I don’t care for and never a taunt, so now I get to go for it again. Fingers crossed, lol.
And yeah, you can still get serious number changes from the point Beta drops and the game releases. Pretty much all the mechanics are in place and at this point it’s all about how everything adds up.
Goodbye rank 100.
Hello rank 1
Yea but having to play the starter characters just stinks as none of them have the play style I like. So to grind out to get Phobe per say it’d take 10+ games :/. Idk it feels more like a chore and a forced experience to play the character you want or have interest in
There’s always the chance they throw us a bone and give us an unlock. That’s kind of why I started If you had a SHIFT key to instant unlock one character:
I realize that it is a common occurrence to expect some kind of reset during closed beta.
However, one great hint! If you are in open beta and tell people that you will reset progress, no one will likely play or commit to continuing, knowing their progress will be deleted. You state that you want everyone to start out at a level playing field but that is not a likely possibility as it is already open beta. Everyone has equal opportunity (relatively) to play this game, many who took their time to take up he game has already done so. Yet you are going to reset their progress?..
Sure, there might be more people, but the community you have now would be a large portion of those who would purchase and play the game. Open beta is a time where people who commit to playing/buying the game should be rewarded to obtain and sustain our loyalty. Telling us our progress in “Open Beta” is going to be reset when anyone can play during this time is a slap to the face. This is a delicate area, I realize some games take to resetting the progress, while others don’t.
The one’s who do not reset during open beta and give rewards for continual loyalty and purchase are usually the games who succeed. Not because of that ONE choice, but because the developers/admin/top people realize that fostering growth of community and feeling that you guys care about us is what breaks or makes a game. Your games are always great, make us believe in YOU too.

It most certainly is not a “slap in the face” nor does it in any way mean the developers don’t care about the community. It is a simple means to ensure a level playing field at launch, nothing more nothing less.

Oh, but they did! It’s not their fault people didn’t read the whole announcement.
Other Information:
Is there an NDA? Nope – it’s an Open Beta which means you can stream, record video, and play Battleborn to your badass heart’s content!
Can I stream or record video of Battleborn? Hell yes! Tweet at @Battleborn and let us know you’re streaming Battleborn live!
Do I need a SHiFT account for the Open Beta? Nope!
Will there be any kind of maintenance scheduled during the Beta? No, there is no planned downtime or maintenance during the Open Beta. If something comes up and maintenance is necessary, we will let you know on the Battleborn Twitter channel or in the Gearbox Open Beta Forums.
Will my progress carry over to the retail game? No, Open Beta progress will not carry over to the retail game.
Emphasis mine.

The big problem with that logic is this: what’s worse, educating people ahead of time about our vision for launch day and why we’ve come to that conclusion, or ignoring the question and then surprising people on launch day with the progress reset? That’s no way to treat our community. We want to be as open and honest with you all as we possibly can be.
The majority of people who I’ve personally fielded this question/concern with have come away understanding our decision and still excited about launch.
As I like to say though, I’m by no means trying to invalidate your opinion here, I’m just giving you my perspective and thusly, the perspective of the studio.
Everyone has equal opportunity (relatively) to play this game, many who took their time to take up he game has already done so. Yet you are going to reset their progress?..
Equal opportunity in time does not translate to equal opportunity in gear drops and character unlocks. Yes, there are lots of players out there who have more hours in the game, but on launch day everyone will start on a level playing field in terms of the “tangibles”.

You may lose some people by doing the former, but you’ll lose more doing the later because you come across as liars and that’s never good for business.
Edit: Sorry, I had cornbread in the oven I had to take out. Anyway, from my experience you guys at GBX have always been straight with us and I appreciate that. You say what you’re going to deliver and you deliver it. I knew about the reset since day one about, so I still say anybody who’s upset should have read the whole announcement first because all of the information was there and none of it was buried.
Its not like it took that long =/. We had the beta for like a week and in that time i had ISIC at Lvl 20 Hero ranked and that working a 40hr job, full time student, and studying.
Mmmm…cornbread.
It was good…! Drop on by the food thread if you want the recipe. Don’t mind the vegetarian, she’s mostly harmless.
Data wipes for Betas is pretty much standard procedure. I don’t believe I ever participated in a Beta where progress wasn’t deleted at the end. I never treat my time in Beta as the real deal, more like “play testing” the real thing. I messed around, tried a few characters and didn’t rush to unlock anything because, well, why bother?
I got to level 40-something in the CTT, then 30 in the Beta (only 5 days
), and I look forward to leveling “for reals” at launch. Most characters are easy to unlock, there is no grind involved, so unless you want to play Ghalt and Ghalt alone, it shouldn’t be long before you gain access to a hero you like.
