Thereâs always the chance they throw us a bone and give us an unlock. Thatâs kind of why I started If you had a SHIFT key to instant unlock one character:
I realize that it is a common occurrence to expect some kind of reset during closed beta.
However, one great hint! If you are in open beta and tell people that you will reset progress, no one will likely play or commit to continuing, knowing their progress will be deleted. You state that you want everyone to start out at a level playing field but that is not a likely possibility as it is already open beta. Everyone has equal opportunity (relatively) to play this game, many who took their time to take up he game has already done so. Yet you are going to reset their progress?..
Sure, there might be more people, but the community you have now would be a large portion of those who would purchase and play the game. Open beta is a time where people who commit to playing/buying the game should be rewarded to obtain and sustain our loyalty. Telling us our progress in âOpen Betaâ is going to be reset when anyone can play during this time is a slap to the face. This is a delicate area, I realize some games take to resetting the progress, while others donât.
The oneâs who do not reset during open beta and give rewards for continual loyalty and purchase are usually the games who succeed. Not because of that ONE choice, but because the developers/admin/top people realize that fostering growth of community and feeling that you guys care about us is what breaks or makes a game. Your games are always great, make us believe in YOU too.
It most certainly is not a âslap in the faceâ nor does it in any way mean the developers donât care about the community. It is a simple means to ensure a level playing field at launch, nothing more nothing less.
Oh, but they did! Itâs not their fault people didnât read the whole announcement.
Other Information:
Is there an NDA? Nope â itâs an Open Beta which means you can stream, record video, and play Battleborn to your badass heartâs content!
Can I stream or record video of Battleborn? Hell yes! Tweet at @Battleborn and let us know youâre streaming Battleborn live!
Do I need a SHiFT account for the Open Beta? Nope!
Will there be any kind of maintenance scheduled during the Beta? No, there is no planned downtime or maintenance during the Open Beta. If something comes up and maintenance is necessary, we will let you know on the Battleborn Twitter channel or in the Gearbox Open Beta Forums.
Will my progress carry over to the retail game? No, Open Beta progress will not carry over to the retail game.
Emphasis mine.
The big problem with that logic is this: whatâs worse, educating people ahead of time about our vision for launch day and why weâve come to that conclusion, or ignoring the question and then surprising people on launch day with the progress reset? Thatâs no way to treat our community. We want to be as open and honest with you all as we possibly can be.
The majority of people who Iâve personally fielded this question/concern with have come away understanding our decision and still excited about launch.
As I like to say though, Iâm by no means trying to invalidate your opinion here, Iâm just giving you my perspective and thusly, the perspective of the studio.
Equal opportunity in time does not translate to equal opportunity in gear drops and character unlocks. Yes, there are lots of players out there who have more hours in the game, but on launch day everyone will start on a level playing field in terms of the âtangiblesâ.
You may lose some people by doing the former, but youâll lose more doing the later because you come across as liars and thatâs never good for business.
Edit: Sorry, I had cornbread in the oven I had to take out. Anyway, from my experience you guys at GBX have always been straight with us and I appreciate that. You say what youâre going to deliver and you deliver it. I knew about the reset since day one about, so I still say anybody whoâs upset should have read the whole announcement first because all of the information was there and none of it was buried.
Its not like it took that long =/. We had the beta for like a week and in that time i had ISIC at Lvl 20 Hero ranked and that working a 40hr job, full time student, and studying.
MmmmâŚcornbread.
It was goodâŚ! Drop on by the food thread if you want the recipe. Donât mind the vegetarian, sheâs mostly harmless.
Data wipes for Betas is pretty much standard procedure. I donât believe I ever participated in a Beta where progress wasnât deleted at the end. I never treat my time in Beta as the real deal, more like âplay testingâ the real thing. I messed around, tried a few characters and didnât rush to unlock anything because, well, why bother?
I got to level 40-something in the CTT, then 30 in the Beta (only 5 days
), and I look forward to leveling âfor realsâ at launch. Most characters are easy to unlock, there is no grind involved, so unless you want to play Ghalt and Ghalt alone, it shouldnât be long before you gain access to a hero you like.
It is becoming a more common theme these days for betas to not reset or to at least reset and then for a few days beforehand carry into live.
Every beta test has a purpose. The beta test here was to allow anyone who was interested to try the game out as well as try to stress test the servers. By all accounts, the PS4 got a lot of good stress testing which probably provided Gearbox a lot of valuable information on making sure that PS4 users didnât get stuck with 45-120min queue times on release! The goal wasnât to see how long they could keep people playing, which would have been a losing game anyways with Dark Souls 3 releasing that Monday, the Doom open beta starting up that weekend, and Blizzard running an Overwatch (mostly) open beta the same weekend. Quite a few people decided to try Battleborn during the open beta and a LOT of people who were otherwise on the fence decided to order the game. And yes, resets happen after REAL beta tests. More on that laterâŚ
And now itâs time for more on that subject! Open Beta is a time of whatever the devs decide they need to test! They donât owe you free game time. They made the decision to provide the game for free in a limited capacity so that they can get test information and you can dive into the mostly finished product and make up your mind. A REAL beta test is a TEST first and foremost. Itâs for the developers, not for the players. If you donât like testing games, donât do it. Itâs really that simple. Definitely donât complain on a forum because the company decided for whatever reason they wanted to, that the best option is to wipe after the test. Did you think about how hard it would be to try to coordinate everyoneâs beta account to a purchased product account? If they had made the requirement to get into this test a purchase of the game, this wouldnât have been an issue, but the fact that ANYONE could make an account and play means there will be a lot of accounts which never end up with a paid product. Why keep that data? Why put effort in to allow players to keep 5 days worth of progress?
The open beta tests you are thinking about are not actually beta tests. They are the free to play games which are in open beta for 2 or 3 years. They open up cash shop purchases during open beta. They are essentially released but donât want to be held to the standards of a fully released game. They arenât beta tests, they are lazy releases. Those games âsucceedâ because they are FREE TO PLAY in almost every case. They get users regardless of content quality because they donât cost and the communities reflect this.
For every example of a non-free to play game who let players during a beta test maintain progress I could come up with 10 counter examples. You are way off base here with every single one of your statements. Unfortunately, your post comes off as âI want free stuffâ and not actually âI am concerned for this gameâ. Sometimes, you have to pay for content. Sometimes, you have to man up and realize your view of a situation is very limited in scope. And, sometimes, you have to look at things from another perspective. If you worked your *** off on a project for over a year, planned out how to keep things fair, promised more content for free over the course of the first year of release, offered paid content at low prices with the same amount of passion going into them as the full release, constant work balancing and continued support, and then you were told you should give more without expecting anything, youâd probably not handle the situation as well as JoeKGBX did in his gentle response to your âgimmeâ attitude.

***Edited to remove an unnecessary comment in poor taste. My apologies mysticaldream.
Iâd note that because this is a beta Iâd expect some changes to the game structure. And often betas lets people level up faster so that people can test stuff that requires higher levels (though whether thatâs the case here I wouldnât know). What I do know though is that they did give a survey after the beta asking people on how they feel about the rate of progression, both of levels and gear. They may very well tweak them, meaning that everyone in the beta may have had a significant advantage (or disadvantage).
Admittedly, Iâm a little biased to wanting a reset so that I could check for myself that little gimmick of pestering Nova about the gear tab, but stillâŚ
I wish I could like twice
Anyway, the thing Iâve been saying on these types of threads is:
Did you play the Beta because:
A. You just wanted to help out and give more data for the Beta
B. Because you like playing the game and any more play time is a good thing!
C. You like leveling things
If the answer is A or B, then congratulations! Youâve met your goal and you donât have anything to worry about with the progression reset.
If the answer is C, then you should consider evaluating what you like about video games and decide if things like âOpen Betaâ are really for you, in the future. Maybe consider a nice JRPG like XenoBlade Chronicles X for WiiU; 100s of hours of exploring and content, all with the added benefit of âthe grindâ.
-Happy Gaming.
Hey. Please talk about the games, as much as you want.
Please donât talk about other forum users, especially your negative opinions of them.
If you find any posts troublesome, flag them.
This game looks to be my next love, lol. The gf was already jealous in the beta. I donât mind grinding to play with Umbra or whoever, I pre-oredered the digital delux edition. =) Overwatch wonât compare to this. I just wish I could keep my loadouts or at least one. I unlocked an amulet that really helped. Umbra with her mutation for her fireball. =( Thatâs gonna be hard to get again and I got that out of a common. I saved up 30k after in points and bought epics grinding to play with charecters. Gears 4 beta let me down lol. Loadouts please save my loadouts!!! Pretty please!!!
Your GF should´nt be jealous, just get her to play Battleborn with you, its the best thing for a relationship!
(Me and my boyfriend had an awesome time with the Beta! Not to tell about our years on Pandora during the BL-games^^)
I don´t think things from the Beta will be saved⌠It would be cool, but kinda unfair to others tooâŚ
Yeah figures nothing would be saved but a boy can dream lol.
I just got her to play fable and now she is playing Ocarina of Time. Although Iâm still solving the dungeons
. Plus there was a a rush for Epona
. Thanks for replying wasnât even sure if anyone would read that =).
Iâm totally good with them resetting it, after all it just makes sense for those who didnât get as much time with the beta. However one point I have to make out of fairness⌠itâs not exactly an even playing field when we get three legendary gear packs for pre-ordering digitally. lol Donât get me wrong, Iâll need that gear so Iâm glad but it does throw balance off a little bit since as soon as I have a gear load out itâll likely be full of high quality items.
I think for everyone who got to [blank] level in the beta should at least get like a character unlock token or somethin lol. O wells
