Thought I’d post my experience with BL3 after the Mayhem 2.0 update:

  • PS4 installed update automatically overnight using the auto-update feature.

  • I attempted to start BL3 in the afternoon about 6pm PT (first time starting BL3 since update)

  • BL3 splash screen would appear, but would freeze for 1 minute, and eventually cause a hard reboot of my PS4. Complete power off and power on. Troubleshooting message appeared for Sony on boot-up.

  • I tried to start BL3 2 or 3 more times and experienced the same hard power off of my PS4 at the same point (splash screen, before the 2K Games / Gearbox logo screens)

  • For reference I own the ‘Deluxe’ edition with Season pass, so I had both the Handsome Jack and ‘Tentacles’ DLC installed. The game was up-to-date prior to the Mayhem 2.0 update.

  • Prior to these crashes I had not experienced any instability or app crashes in about 1 month of regular gameplay.

  • I decided to Delete the application from my PS4 and re-install it.

  • After re-install I was able to start BL3 and load in to the game. I immediately joined a friend’s session. Normal Mode, Athenas, just prior to the ‘Katagawa’ boss fight.

  • There were 3 of us in the session. Me and 2 friends. Call them Friend1 (session owner), and Friend2 (joined Friend1’s session, as I did).

  • We jumped down to start the Katagawa boss fight. Both myself and Friend2 were looking at a frozen shot of the ground as it seemed to try to start a cut-scene. Then we both crashed back to the PS4 desktop with an error msg to send to Sony.

  • Friend1 had successfully entered into the Katagawa boss fight without issues.

  • Friend2 was able to rejoin Friend1 and continue gaming. Not sure if they both fought the boss, or he joined Friend1 after the fight.

I had to log off at that point for ‘real life’ stuff. I launched BL3 later that evening for a solo session. TVHM, Mayhem 3. I played the game for about 2 hours without any crashes or noticible lag issues.

So that’s my story. I’ll try some multiplayer again tonight and see how it goes.

TLDR: PS4 hard crash at splash screen repeatedly on first launch after Mayhem 2.0 update. Re-installed game seems to have fixed that. Followed by crash to PS4 desktop joining a boss fight in Friends Session. All this was the first time I had crashes with BL3 since I started playing in earnest 1 month ago.
