Random Talk Thread, Mk. III

Does anyone except me remember the intensely melancholy BBC logo that played at the start and end of their VHS tapes in the 1990s? It was ok at the start but as the final word on a tape… it sure was gloomy.

I see that quite a bit on some of my BBC DVDs. It is pretty melancholy. I have no idea why they did that.

I’ve never known the BBC to have great judgement when it comes to theme tunes. Their headline TV news intro / pips remix is absurdly over-intense :stuck_out_tongue:

The vid of its recording is rather pleasing however

And it hits 00.00 and we all hope the autocue has somehow messed up :uk:

I have a couple of Wallace and Gromit tapes that have that logo.

And speaking of ominous logos, Who remembers the Paramount Feature Presentation logo?

Cracking toast, Grommit! We’ve got the whole set on DVD (and 1 or 2 videos as well). That’s probably where I remember hearing that BBC thing from.

Here are the tapes I was talking about:

They were distributed by Fox in the 90’s.

I have “A Close Shave” somewhere but I can’t find it at the moment.

And speaking of Aardman, I also have the movie Chicken Run on VHS.

Haven’t watched it in years. Did you know they’re making a sequel to this movie?

Aardman’s “The Curse of the Were Rabbit” is some of the funniest animation I’ve ever seen.

That’s another movie I haven’t watched in years!

Man, I really need to rewatch all these movies.

Reminds me that I still have copies of the original Star Wars movies on VHS. Haven’t watched those in a while.

Wallace and Gromit is a real icon. Producing stuff of that length by clay animation is time-consuming! I love the early ones in particular, though they’re pretty dark. A Close Shave gave me nightmares.

I found a place at home where I can do pullups so I got no excuse to skip that anymore, everything sucks.

Oh man VHS, that reminds me that my VHS copy of Snatch broke. rip

I have so much nostalgia for VHS. Supported by the fact that I hate CDs and DVDs as a format, their fragility / likelihood to get scratched drive me insane. Sure VHSes don’t always age well (heh) but you can ruin a DVD when it’s right out of the box.

I bought a VHS player recently (someone made a film of one of the books I’m studying and it wasn’t good enough for a DVD port) and complained to my parents about having to pay the high price of £30 for it on ebay. They were not impressed, and my dad said he’d got in trouble with my mum for impulse buying one when we were kids - they cost around £250 then.

But you know what’s nice, higher resolutions

VHS are best for best of the worst movies

I have a DVD/VCR combo in my room. (But only the VCR works.)

I also have a huge collection of Disney and Star Trek tapes.

Higher resolution is totally wasted on some of us. :eyeglasses:

They’re also good for keeping me from spending hundreds of dollars and the time to find and locate newer copies of the movies I already own.

Oh yeah, the quality is terrible in comparison to modern HD.

Still, I’m a '90s-noughties child and my first glorious experiences with visual media will never not be cherished.
