Beautiful day here. Spent the day reading Divergent, which I’m really glad I started. It’s gripping and miles away from Irish literature. I haven’t been this hooked on a book for a long time!

Been reading Metro 2033, which too, which is also good and has some absolutely great / chilling scenes, though I’m not finding is quite as enthralling. I’d be a bit stricter if I was the editor :stuck_out_tongue:

@Hattie, Have you watched the Divergent movies?

Seen the first one, which is how I found out about the series.

I’ve seen bits and pieces of them.

And have you seen The Hunger Games as well?

Yes, and read the first book. I like them

Again, I’ve seen bits and pieces of the movies but I’ve never read the books.

I’m the same way with Harry Potter, LOTR and The Hobbit.

And I remember making a parody of Hunger Games: Catching Fire called “The Hardcover Games: Kindle Fire”.

Where it was a battle between physical books and e-readers.

Read the books. Everything on that list was better in print.

… Admittedly that statement is somewhat redundant given almost everything is better before adaption though.

Nah, I liked the film of The Hunger Games better for a few reasons - the first one at least, haven’t read the other novels. The book was fine and the writing perfectly unobjectionable though.

I admit to surprise at that, but I may be biased given how little I tend to enjoy the medium. Albeit at least I like movies more than TV.

Well, honestly I try and stay away from making final judgements about quality, though there a few film adaptations out there which have left me feeling utterly outraged, heh. I thought the film of The Hunger Games had some intrinsic advantages over the book’s format cause it allowed a kind of… ironic complicity into the theme of viewing / being an audience member, and they exploited that really well. The book took advantage of giving more emotional insight into Katniss instead and I can see the appeal of that, but I preferred the more sinister tack that the film could manage.

Like I said, her prose is fine, but it did face a challenge of a lot of post-apocalyptic writing - or any that’s set in a very different world, namely leaning the right amount on exposition. I thought the film got a better balance than Collins, though the last two were agonisingly heavy on it and I felt it really should have been one.

Yeah, The Hobbit outright grates. Honestly, movies tend to stick with me more when they either annoy me, or some particular detail catches. I don’t actually particularly like the Harry Potter movies for example, but they tend to stay with me since I’m such a fan of their orchestral music that I’ve gone to see it performed twice.

When I was younger, I remember getting excited for the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies because I liked the books so much.

I watched the first one when it came out on DVD and I thought it was okay.

I saw the second movie on one of the movie channels and I thought it was alright.

But the third movie was awful. I remember my mom renting it from Redbox and I didn’t bother putting it into my DVD player. I just kept it on my table for about two hours and I said: “Meh, it was okay.”

Heresy! :stuck_out_tongue:

I love the Harry Potter books, a big part of it was that they kind of accompanied my childhood and then adolescence, I was the Potter generation. They meant a lot to me and still do. I seem to recall the films kind of disappointed me at first in the way film adaptations often do - so much cool stuff had to be cut - but these days I love them equally and in some cases maybe more. Loads of good acting talent, and I can watch them all with my family which makes them a great experience.

And yeah, the latest fad of ‘let’s turn the last book into two movies!’ has tested my patience greatly. I think the last Harry Potter was kind of justified because that because does have two very different parts to it. But The Hunger Games really didn’t need to be. As to The Hobbit… that’s one of those rare films that left me outraged. Actually more horror struck. Couldn’t get past the first one!
