If it makes you feel any better, I eschewed chicken and had salmon for lunch.

Don’t worry.

We’re having pork chops for dinner tomorrow.

Jesus Christ people… Now I want to smoke, get laid, and eat an entire rotisserie chicken.

OH YES.

I’m not actually sure what I’m eating tonight… Steak maybe? We’ll see.

Mmmm Wendy’s. Haven’t been this way in a while. Gonna get a burger and a cheesy tater and a chicken sam for lunch later tonight.

My mom loves their baked potatoes as well.

She usually likes hers with cheese and bacon.

Bastards are out of taters! Damn!

It happens.

I remember this one time my family and I went to an Arby’s that was out of roast beef!

Alright, @TemetNosce , @Curmudge0n , and anyone else who wants to play…

My bard gained a level tonight and I legit don’t know what to do with it.

Some updates since our last conversation-

The dungeon has continued and taken it’s toll on her available spellslots. here’s a link (THIS LINK DOESNT WORK ANYMORE CAUSE I R DUMB AND FORGOT IT HAD MY NAME) to her character sheet.

As of right now she has 3 first level slots still available, 1 second level slot, and 2 fourth level slots. She’s at 52/68 hp with 2 hit dice left over to spend on self healing. Everyone was also issued a ā€œfree level up fruitā€ that will restore everything if they eat it, but the shamans that gave it to us warned us that if we eat it, we will never be able to leave.

We’ve progressed through the second and effectively ā€œfellā€ through two levels. We had a brief sidequest today looking for a place to try and get a long rest, and found it… kind of.

Basically the only way for us to get a long rest is to drink from the ā€œdecanter of lightā€, which is in the realm of the dead. That’s why we can’t sleep - the temple is built on some old juju that is really close to the realm of the dead. The party fell into it on a side quest today. I saw the decanter, but it was guarded by a shadowy figure and I was by myself. The rest of the group roamed in the deadlands for ā€œ4 daysā€ to them, but only a few hours on our side. We’re on the lookout for other ways back to get to the decanter for next session, but um… yeah, good times.

I also got some pretty solid upgrades. I got a +1 Masterwork (but not magic) short sword. In this campaign the DM has house rules for these - I get nothing added to attack, but the weapons damage gets a full extra dice added to it. It’s a short sword, so I get to go all duelist on it - +7 for 2d6+6 damage aint bad for a song lady.

Additionally I got a wonderous new lute! It gives things I’m trying to charm a disadvantage on their saving throw and lets me cast once per day (not per long rest) each of the following - speak with animals, entangle (yessss), faerie fire (ā– ā– ā– ā–  yes), and shilaliegh (boo).

Anyway - on to actually theorycrafting.

I’m going from level 7 to 8. This gives me an Ability Score Modifier and a new spell.

Here’s some concerns for both - Our paladin is out for the next few weeks due to IRL stuff. The DM said she’ll still be around to be used for lay on hands pick ups and a few other things, but our easiest pool of spell slots (she was DC’d into warlock) and free healy juice is mostly out of the game.

Our Wizard’s schedule changed and so he is no longer on the table.

Our cleric wasn’t there today, but we believe will be back later.

So today, I was the lone spellcaster and for sure, we’re down our spiker.

That sucks.

If I can make it to level 10 for ancient knowledge we should be fine. All our healers will be back and I’ll load o up on actual arcane damage spells - good times, great oldies.

In the interim… I’ve got hard options.

Let’s start with ASI because I think that will narrow the spell selection down. Here are the options as I see them.

    • 2 Dex maxes me in that skill. I’m wearing studded leather so it does a lot for me. Adds one to AC, one to attack, and one to damage, along with that oh so good dexterity save.

I also have my eye on a lot of feats -

  • Ritual Caster is just… really good for me. Opens me up for a lot of utility spells, and as long as I have time, I can cast them without burning spell slots. I’d be picking wizard here since they cover the largest amount of ground.

… Actually typing all this out… ritual caster is pretty obviously the way to go. I was going to look at magic initiate and a few other feats, but ritual caster solves a lot of our utility problems plus I can probably pilfer spells out of the now NPC Wizard’s spellbook.

For reference-

Ritual Caster

Prerequisite: Intelligence or Wisdom 13 or higher

You have learned a number of spells you can cast as rituals. These spells are written in a ritual book, which you must have on hand when casting one of them.

When you gain this feat, choose one of the following classes: bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, warlock, or wizard. You acquire a ritual book holding two 1st level spells with the ritual tag, which must be on the list of the chosen class. Your casting ability for these rituals are the same as the chosen class (Charisma for bard, sorcerer, or warlock; Wisdom for cleric or druid; Intelligence for wizard).

If you come across a spell in written from, such as a magical scroll or a wizard’s spellbook, you might be able to add it to your ritual book. The spell must be on the spell list for the class you chose, the spell’s level must not be higher than half your level (rounded up), and it must have the ritual tag. The process of copying the spell into your ritual books takes 2 hours per level of the spells, and costs 50 gp per level of the spell. This cost represents material components spent on practicing the spell, as well as the fine inks you must use to record it.

Just taking that and getting Comprehend Languages and Detect Magic are going to save a lot of time for us in this ancient tomb where we only have one NPC who can read the book getting us through.

The list of wizard spells with the ritual tag is stupid too.

1st Level
Alarm.
Comprehend languages.
Detect magic.
Find familiar.
Identify.
Illusory script. Magic Mouth
Tenser’s floating disk.
Unseen servant.

2nd Level
Gentle repose.

3rd Level
Feign death.
Leomund’s tiny hut.
Phantom Steed.
Water breathing.

5th Level
Contact other planes.
Rary’s telepathic bond.

6th Level
Drawmij’s instant summons.

I mean, I’ll spend some time playing around, but that’s a lot of ā€œooooh, maybeā€ for one feat, and a lot of utility without spending spell slots.

Edit: Well, the spells section went easier than I thought after that. Picked up charm monster since I think it works with my new lute. Don’t think it’s worth doing any other changes unless my DM allows me to swap cantrips.

All I have now is the debate about my starting ritual spells, and I’m thinking about burning a plot point card with the DM to see if my book spawns with more of them.

Yeah, wasn’t entirely sure what you were asking for advice on here. Sounds like you already basically know what you’re doing.

It’s more I typed out everything since you guys were interested last time. I had no idea which way I was going to go until I got to ritual caster and was like ā€œoh… this solves literally all my ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  problemsā€.

This is why people journal.

I thought about deleting the post but I thought you guys would like the update at least :stuck_out_tongue:

Nah, totally understandable. Yeah though, I do the same thing about talking things out. Definitely works.

I’d been stressing about this for a while too! There are a lot of good reasons to take that +2 to dex to round that stat out…

They all seem kind of wimpy compared to ā€œDoes my group have 10 minutes? Then I cast detect magic for free.ā€ or ā€œI can suddenly read all the crazy ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  here that we literally brought an NPC to do as long as I have 10 minutes.ā€

Like every room we’ve gone through has had some crazy dead text or glyph written on the walls.

Update appreciated.

Elder gods graffiti?
But since you’ve had enough trap trouble already, being able to read the hints may go a long way.

Same.

Yeah our cleric is knowledge domain so he knows it, but he wasn’t here today and I’m tired of the game of telephone already going on in our party because of the orc we picked up.

Plus, seems like it’d be real helpful to have two people that can read the NPC’s book if he bites it, because it’s a pretty helpful guide through the third and fourth levels.

Edit: Plus, the DM has already said that the ā€œdivineā€ magic would attract undead from the realm of the dead to get us, so we’ve been keeping the cleric in minty condition. I think he’s still the only one with all spell slots - the most we use him for is the light cantrip to save time on torches.

Oh.

Huh.

Holy ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  ā– ā– ā– ā–  my DM rolled… a thing.

This is the musical instrument we found today.

I think he missed the part where it’s one of the ā€œInstruments of the Bardsā€ and has-

All instruments of the bards can be used to cast the following spells: fly, invisibility, levitate, and protection from evil and good.

On top of the aforementioned

In addition, the Fochlucan bandore can be used to cast entangle, faerie fire, shillelagh, and speak with animals.

All of those are once per day, long rest be damned.

It’s like stapling a half caster class on top of my main caster class…

Jesus christ I really have to PM him in the morning.

That is… oh wow!
Lots of utility is a vast understatement here, to say the least.

Behold the bard:

Yeah I decided to look it up since my notes on it were bleak. I’m gonna make sure its the same thing and that he’s cool with it tomorrow.

That plus ritual caster = loooots of problem solving.

He’s always been my go to bard guy.

Well, him and Doof Warrior.

You should know that I use any excuse to post Doctor Who pics

Items, even powerful ones just have one problem: they can be lost, stolen, damaged and so on. So better be careful…

Pfft, I’m college of swords. Careful is that thing in the middle of the face you aim for right?

My favorite part is that it kind of solves my weapon problem too where we might be fighting something that’s resistant or immune to nonmagical items. Shillelagh is awesome in this edition - it turns a staff or club into a D8 weapon, you use your spellcasting ability instead of strength on it for attack and damage bonuses (cough20charismacough) and it becomes magical. My character got a ā€œbelaying pinā€ (club) for being a pirate-

So that’s going on her hip. I’m trying to imagine what she even looks like now. 5’8", tan, red hair, green eyes with a billy club on one hip, a masterwork sword on the other, and the world’s greatest goddamn guitar strapped to her back.
