Well, finished Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. Sort of feel in a JRPG mood though, might play another… I’d play Second Chapter, but it’s still not out in the USA yet.

Lands - These are usually the most overlooked important decision you have. You actually have a decent mix here for the most part, even if you are looking at quite a few stacks that come into play tapped. That being said, considering you are running three color and it seems to me like you may be 2-3 lands light in the deck. The good news is one of your colors is green, which can help you not be mana screwed somewhat well.

I haven’t really had much trouble with mana yet, and once I get the cards I’m looking for my deck will be even less top-heavy. I’ll probably throw a few lands in my sideboard Friday just in case I was getting lucky with my lands though. 23 is a pretty decent amount of land cards though right?

As a special note here, I know the better lands seem expensive, but they can be among the best investments a new player can make in magic. Lands retain their value very well, especially considering M15 gives you access to the “pain” lands (like your Llanowar Waste that can tap for two colors but hurt you) and “Fetch Lands” (like Windswept Heath that sacrificies itself and fetches a basic of your choosing). Fetch lands in particular are very, very expensive, but they are also highly sought after in other formats like Commander, Modern, and Legacy, and if you stay interested will keep a lot of value down the road. In the short term, even a full set of Llanowar Wastes and whatever the GW equivalent of that will make your deck a lot more faster and agile in the opening turns, which usually set the tempo for the entire game.

You’re right, and as I play more I’ll probably slowly pick up a few of the fancy lands, but for now I think I’m ok with not having them. In terms of bang for my buck I think the cards I listed above will improve my deck more than 2 lands would.

Back to the green. Where you are running three colors, mana fixing is very much a plus. I’d recommend looking into cards with “Cultivate” like effects which will help streamline your plays and help you ramp into your heavy hitters quicker. I’m not sure what cards do that in this standard, but its worth looking into.

I have a few enchant land cards that make them produce 2 per turn or something which is pretty nice. I’ll see if I can find a few more of those and try them out.

Considering you are playing white and black, which are arguably the two best removal colors in game, I can’t help but feel like you are a little removal light, especially with the soft early game you’ll be bringing. Your mid range hitters aren’t bad, like the siege rhinos - they aren’t flashy or impressive, but can be effective if you hit the mana. Unfortunately until about turn 4-5, you’re going to be getting your ducks in a row to start dropping them. Some of the cards on your want list will help, but you either want bodies on the field or the ability to mow them down. Personally, I like “death frenzy” for your deck as it can thin out the mardu token decks that seem to be kind of popular right now, but again, I don’t know the meta really well.

That’s definitely something I would keep in my sideboard. I keep seeing this red aggro deck that can throw like 8 goblin tokens on the board in 1 turn.

However, I think I do have a decent amount of removal with 4 x Utter End and 4 x Azban Token.

I do think I need a good 1 mana creature, but I’m not too sure what…

Past that the only other advice I can give you is my deckbuilding philosophy. It’s straightforward. Make sure your deck has a purpose. Make sure that every card you use fits in line with that purpose, or makes it hard for opponents to stop you from hitting that prupose. Make sure that you can cast what you need when you need to.

I think the main thing I need right now is more consistency. Of my good cards I generally only have 2 max, and once I up that to 4 I think I’ll be much more consistent. Because I can take games convincingly if I draw my good cards, but if I don’t draw them then I’m in big trouble.

I’m happy to report that Commandant Steele appears better today. No more runny left eye and she’s not sneezing nearly as much. Also gave her the last of her coccidia meds tonight so we’re both glad that’s over. She’s currently napping while I sit here and watch The Wire.
