Revenge of the Cartels Seasonal Event is Coming April 23rd

Check out Revenge of the Cartels, the new Borderlands 3 seasonal event bringing you limited-time loot and rewards.

Soak up some rays, rock those neon colors, and bust crime like it’s the '80s in Revenge of the Cartels, the free seasonal event happening in Borderlands 3 from April 23 to June 4. Revenge of the Cartels features an all-new area, fresh enemy types, limited-time Challenges, and of course, tons of gear to collect including new Legendaries and Anointments.

In his continued studies of human customs, your Saurian crewmate Maurice has gotten himself mixed up with the wrong crowd, and now finds himself indebted to Joey Ultraviolet, the kingpin of the Eridium Cartel. To save Maurice’s scaly hide, you’ll need to take the fight to Joey and his gangs of underlings at Villa Ultraviolet, an opulent hideout overlooking a tropical paradise.

The first time you log in during Revenge of the Cartels, you’ll get a repeatable quest from Maurice aboard Sanctuary III that must be completed in order to reach Villa Ultraviolet. During the event, neon-glowing Cartel Operative enemies can be found lurking around the galaxy, including areas from campaign add-ons. When you kill an Operative, a dead-man’s switch signal is sent to their cohorts, and some Cartel Thugs will warp in to avenge their slain comrade.

Be on your guard, because Cartel Thugs might also be accompanied by one of the Eridium Cartel’s Underbosses. These are unique, Badass-level enemies belonging to one of the Cartel’s three gangs (more on those in a bit). Eliminating these reinforcements will net you Hideout Coordinates; once you’ve collected enough of these, Maurice can open up a portal that leads directly to Villa Ultraviolet.

Once you make it to Villa Ultraviolet, you’ll have to battle your way through hordes of Eridium Cartel members belonging to one of three distinct gangs. You might encounter the tech-obsessed cyborgs of CryptoSec, the meat-charring debt collectors of The Burnt Ends, or the Eridium dust runners known as The Purpatrators.

Each gang has their own Underbosses, who you’ll need to take down in addition to Joey Ultraviolet himself—and each gang has its own Legendary loot pool, so multiple visits to Villa Ultraviolet are highly encouraged. Every time you clear out Villa Ultraviolet, one of the other gangs will rise to fill the power vacuum, so you won’t take on the same gang twice in a row. Maybe you’ll be lucky enough to find gear with new Anointments that trigger bonuses when you first activate your Action Skill, or new Legendary weapons like the O.P.Q. System assault rifle that can shoot an auto-firing copy of itself targeting whatever you’re looking at.

In addition to each gang’s new loot, Revenge of the Cartels introduces a new set of limited-time Challenges you can complete to earn themed cosmetic rewards. There are 18 Challenges in all that are only available while Revenge of the Cartels is live, and you can track your progress via the event tab in your ECHO Device menu. Here’s a breakdown of the cosmetic items you’ll collect depending on how many event Challenges you’ve completed:

  • 3 Challenges: ‘VECH-tor Graphics’ ECHO Device Skin
  • 6 Challenges: ‘Retro Outrunner’ Weapon Trinket
  • 10 Challenges: ‘Framed Firewall’ Room Decoration
  • 14 Challenges: ‘Hotline Pandora’ Vault Hunter Head
  • 18 Challenges: ‘Death by Filigrees’ Vault Hunter Skin

As with other seasonal events, you can turn the event on or off at any time between its start and end dates via an option in the Main Menu. In multiplayer, the host’s choice will determine if the group sees Revenge of the Cartels content.

Revenge of the Cartels will kick off via a patch on Thursday, April 23 and is scheduled to run for six weeks ending on June 4. Good luck taking down the Eridium Cartel, Vault Hunter—Joey Ultraviolet and his gangs won’t know what hit 'em!

Check out the other big update coming with the April 23 patch: Mayhem Mode 2.0 !

So what was the reason for telling us to save all the cash for this event?

Could be more SDU upgrades, but then they would talked about it, so probably no.
Event itself sounds very nice.

@Noelle_GBX Will the challenges be shared between vault hunters or done on an individual basis? Personally I’d prefer not to have to grind them out for every character.

If it will work like previous events, you’ll get all unique rewards (heads and skins) for every VH when you complete them for the first time.

Sounds like a significant grind…

so this sounds like an official statement for it, being a timed event
simple question: why?

Seems a bit asinine to have it be a limited time event and then put the per-character unlocks at the high end of the challenges.

Well, this sounds Awesome!
Very excited for this!

And with the ability to deactivate the event in the main menu, we should see at least 30% less people complaining about this totally optional event!

Also, @Noelle_GBX will there be balances and fixes coming out with this week’s patch as well?

I see Gearbox really gave up on weapon skins, huh? I guess weapon trinkets that you can hardly notice and room decorantions that you won’t be seeing 90% of the time you’re playing the game is more important…

Not exactly feeling motivated by these events anymore.

Looking forward for the 3rd DLC.

The event is lasting 6 weeks, and will probably be repeating every year (from what has been implied in interviews with the devs).

Regarding cash: My guess is that we have immensely expensive chests in the new area, probably after the end of a run. And if those chests are really as expensive as the need for cash might imply it, we would want to have big reserves. But honestly? Just strap on that Loot Expander Artifact and farm your favorite boss and you’ll get millions of cash without any kind of exploit.

Nice for not repeatedly getting the same faction that doesn’t drop anything of interest for you. Bad for always having to fight at least one other gang until you can fight the one you need again. Sure, there are ways around that, but I doubt there will be any of that. Sorry for my pessimism, but it comes from experience. I’m sure it’ll be fun nonetheless.

Maybe there will be more “Predatory Lending”-type weapons, requiring money to use.

Or maybe a shield that burns money. That would be interesting, a gamble holding onto your money for the buff instead of dumping it on an alt.

kinda…they dont seem to realize that people just want…NEED dedicated farm to have any chance to get their BiS gear

Only complaint is the “repeatable quest from Maurice”, I just hope you guys learn from the Halloween event and not made it tedious and boring by making us fetch ‘x’ amount of this just to travel Villa Ultraviolet and go back to Pandora after that place is done and do the same quest again just to go back?

The new area looks really nice. Looking forward to this event.
Don’t know how grindy it will be, hopefully not too bad.
I do wish Mayhem 2.0 was not starting at the same time. Would have liked them to be spread apart by a week.

Wait why are the new anointments added to the Cartel event not the Mayhem 2.0?

This is a rather short-sighted move - because this would mean they likely will only apply to vanilla weapons. Lots of the current meta weapons are from the Takedown/DLCs and would greatly benefit from these new anointments too. As would any weapons from future content.

oh, right
that means that the new anointments will disappear from the loot pool after the event?
that would be horrible xD
