Yeah, It’s just really hard to think of a demo that would be effective that showcased the brilliant PvP, but in a fair manner to consumers and devs. Knowing the heroes is such a major part of the game, it seems that not being able to play the hero to learn how to beat them would lead to more frustration. I’m scratching my head trying to think of an effective way to demo the game.
Maybe a “pay a certain amount to unlock a specific character”?
Not too expensive, but enough so that it would be a good amount cheaper to just buy the full game rather than purchasing characters one by one?
No ftp. The current plan is a trial followed by having to buy the actual game
I feel like limited maps would be difficult. Perhaps they just can’t vote for the newest maps? And can’t do Renegade, Experiment, or Heliophage? No gear drops over rare, and no characters unlocked through level ups (you won’t get Kleese, or Ghalt, etc.)?
After they bought the full game.
I can already imagine the pubstomp teams salivating at the thought of fresh newbie blood to spill if they were matched against veterans - hopefully it doesn’t come to that.
I would assume that the trial version would be the same as Overwatch recently did, no? Full game access for a weekend or something along those lines. Orbit necessarily full game, just pvp, but with all characters (except the new additions) unlocked.
Ideally, (because pub stomps) these trial people could only get to say CR 10, before they stopped gaining any further xp. Also, I think it would be good if they were only grouped with/against people that are CR 10 and below.
I couldn’t imagine that it would be a permanent demo…not to say it won’t be, and if so, I have no idea how they would go about that.
I´ve no clue, its all speculation from my side^^
I like your ideas, this is very similar to what I had in mind!
If I recall correctly this is pretty much how my Overwatch free weekend was - only played with and against people in the same level range as me. It wad only until I reached past level 10 and bought the game that quick match matched me with players with significantly higher levels.
If the Battleborn trial worked the same it be a much better way to maintain and get players than simply providing food to the wolves.
Wouldn’t that actually be a bad point to buy the game for some peoples?
“Wrecking noobs everyday for free”
Wait, sorry…
“Reckt nubz evrydai4free 420”
I think Free players or not should end up in the same queue once they have blood on their hands.
I’m kinda sad it turned out to be just a rumor. I’m not a fan of f2p (actually despise them), but if what Kotaku wrote was true, all that has happened with the game looked logical, and suggested plans promised better future. Like, the initial GBX plan on the game was good, but it sank due to 2K’s intervention. Simple picture with a simple and bright solution…
But it’s not. And though free trial is a very good thing (I was all for it from the launch), it’s not yet enough to make the game thrive. More than million game owners, so few actual players.
Matchmaking is supposed to sort this issue out. But can it?
LOL “free” platinum? you mean they are giving us something they should have already given us since it was on the disk to begin with I.E. Skins?
I’ve had my 80$ worth of fun with this game in all honesty so I’m not complaining about what I’m not getting, but this would seem like something that we should be receiving by-proxy of our purchase.
I’m done playing in only a few short weeks, so it doesn’t matter to me anyhow. I don’t really care if it is F2P or not.
So, thread closed, to prevent further ftp rumors and such.
They’ll have to fix matchmaking as a whole to sort this out, and hopefully they’ll be some big fixes in the October update. Just gating them off with other trial version players (not that you suggested it) won’t do much other than create a bunch of people upset after they paid for the full version only to enter the brutal pubstomping pool.
If only someone had said that months ago....

“Free trial plans are not firm yet - months away. Expect great continued support and awesome line up of DLC.”
“I do not expect we’ll have our details sorted or be ready to talk about it until we’re well past the DLC - months away at best.”
No complains from my part. I paid full price plus season pass for this game and it was totally worth it (even now without having the first dlc yet). Every game with decent population will always have toxic and troll players. Learn to deal with them. It’s easy and will make your gaming experience more enjoyable.
…eventually remembers to close thread.
