I know where you’re coming from OP. Of my last 25 Incursion matches I’ve won 9, Out of those 25 matches there have been 9 surrenders and 7 matches that ended with a score of 100-0 for one side or the other. Only 1 of the 25 ended with a score differential of less than 50. This kind of thing gets old fast. I don’t mind losing, but I do mind when 2/3rds of my matches are complete blowouts. That’s not fun at all.
It also sucks that I never get to play any maps except for Overgrowth, Paradise and Outback because of the voting system.
I’ve heard Incursion is more snowball than the others that’s why I’ve never gone into it… There is nothing like getting your ass royally handed to you with no way to stop it
You’re asking the right question. What are the odds? We know that the matchmaking in this game isn’t handled particularly well. It has a tendency of stacking one team with players with much more experience. Now, for most of us that means that sometimes we’re going to be on the team with the higher level players, sometimes we’ll be on the lower level team and sometimes it will be pretty even.
The average player isn’t going to have a problem this severe. However, there are going to be outliers like OP here who end up on the disadvantaged team far more often than not. It makes sense when you think about. If you gave 1000 people a coin and told them to flip it 10 times each, most people would end up with close to 5 heads and 5 tails. However, there will be a percentage of them with 10 heads and 0 tails or vice versa. A version of that is what seems to be happening to the OP here. Pure dumb luck is putting him on the bad side of the matchmaking system just like pure dumb luck puts some people on the good side of it.
A good matchmaking system tries to minimize this effect. After all, in order for a game to be fun both sides need to have an equal chance of winning give or take. Long losing streaks aren’t fun and winning against opponents you outclass by a mile isn’t fun either. IMO the matchmaking is the #1 issue that GBX needs to quickly address.
It’s funny, during open beta, I didn’t care for Meltdown all that much. I couldn’t figure out what was really going on and Incursion seemed more structured in a way. Now that I have a better feel for Meltdown, I’ve been enjoying it a lot more.
I still like incursion too, but find the new Echelon map a bit too “tight” (as in bottlenecks/chokepoints). Looking forward to changes on Overgrowth.
I like Meltdown because it feels like a more even experience, where when Incursion goes south it goes deep south and you cannot stop the enemy at all. I’m starting to think I’m maybe just bad at PvP because I can get absolutely nothing done as Attikus except feeding the enemy. I’ve had 8 / 1 games with Ambra and Whiskey though so I don’t know.
This is funny to me. When I kept losing at Counterstrike and Starcraft 2 I figured I was just bad at those games. I tried getting better, which only worked in SC2 for me. This guy somehow argues it’s the game’s fault. I get that the ELO system isn’t perfect right now, but this is truely a completely wrong mentality to have if you want to get better at something. Practise makes perfect.
At least it gives you a chance to engage more and not be under brutal pressure the whole match. I’m sure the changes will help with Incursion, just right now it’s way too aggravating for me and I end up wanting to just run in suicidal style at a desperate attempt to kill someone. lol
Don’t mean to hate really… But couldn’t that be because of the team/ character pick? Meltdown is a bit more team-comp dependant in that you really need 2 minion wreckers (e.g. Thorne, O.M., Orendi… AOE characters basically). One in each lane.
I avoid pvp like the plague, don’t play shooters or mobas, generally avoid mmos with forced pvp, etc. But for whatever reason, I’ve been really enjoying it here, even though I suck most of the time.
That’s definitely a part of it, and factors in to liking to play support characters. Heck, even playing Montana last night, there were folks on my team that are much more aggressive than me, so I focused on trying to slow people they were engaged with and drawing attention off them, throwing in the occasional stun where needed.
My overall win record with randoms is 6/10 , with my friends I’m 8/10. Match making sucks, so the way to beat it is to be social and find people to play with.
