Season pass holders and marketplace skins+taunts

The season pass give you acces to 5 DLC packs, each pack have 1 story mission and skins and taunts and unlock the 5 new characters.

What spawn said:

Season Pass:

5 Story Missions (with DLC-specific skins and taunts).
5 Character Unlock Keys
Unspecified Digital Bonuses

Tier 2 and Tier 3 skins were never included in the season pass, though from what I have been reading some people believed that they were – which isn’t unreasonable.

That being said, we don’t know if all tier 2 and tier 3 skins will be cash-shop only, there still are a lot of questions to be answered.

I hope this helps.

I wasn’t expecting them to be part of buying the season pass either. I expected them to be in the game for everybody to access. That’s what’s even more confusing to me. Then, to introduce them as microtransactions that my season pass doesn’t cover is just a huge punch in the nuts. Unreal…

I definitely understand that.

The situation could have been handled better, for sure.

I’ve given you my broader opinion on other threads, but I completely agree that there was a better way to communicate the information.

Have a good one man.

Try looking at it this way (I don’t know that this was the specific rationale, just a way of looking at it):

They wanted to have paid DLC that centered on additional PvE content. They wanted to have new characters and chose to not tie them specifically to the DLC because they wanted people whose primary interest was pvp to have a way to attain them without forcing them to purchase content they had less interest in. They then created optional cosmetic content in the form of skins to help fund the development of characters and continued new development knowing that not all players would want the DLC.

So, what I’m suggesting is that maybe having paid skins is what allowed them to make the characters available to everyone without DLC purchase. Again, just a theory, I don’t know this to be true.

Regardless, if it helps keep the game going, I’m all in favor of it. The onus is on them to create something so cool that I want to spend more money (and yes, I am well aware that there’s a counter argument here that if the base skins had been a bit more exciting people might be happier).

I get what you’re saying, but it doesn’t change the fact that MT’s in a full price game with a season pass are borderline unacceptable. IF, for example, in 6 months from now they had released most/all new dlc missions and the tier 2 and 3 skins were out and the game was kicking along successfully, and they announced originally unplanned tier 4 skins that they were going to release as MT’s I would get behind that. That’s content that comes about after the game has been successful based on the already planned future content, planned future content that my season pass should have well and truly covered. As it stands, they have taken a chunk of the game out and put it behind a pay wall. A chunk of the game that I should, by rights, have already purchased via DDE/SP. We’re six weeks post release, the servers here is Aus are absolute trash and have been since release, there is a plethora of issues that the community has already been vocal about, and they decide to implement MT’s now? It’s bad timing, on top of bad business practice.

No matter what the MT’s are funding, it’s just not okay to ask for more money from the consumers who paid for a full price title (DDE/SP holders especially) this early with this many ongoing issues. I know that they’re still working on everything else behind the scenes, but that doesn’t excuse adding MT’s at this point.

I do agree (and have said) that the timing is…not good.

The moral of the story here is, never purchase aseason pass for ANY game unless the dev team/publisher has already earned your trust. I know I’ve learned my lesson.

They never lied or betrayed you because said clearly before the game was released that it will have cosmetic MTs.

Someone please explain to me why I should be mad at gearbox? People keep saying bad timing.

Announcing the microtransactions at the same time as everything else wasn’t bad timing because no one got mad way back when it was announced.

The exclusive season pass stuff will eventually arrive.(I know you want specific dates but that isn’t realistic.)

Why should I not be allowed the option to buy my favorite skin? (These are not the same skins as the exclusive ones coming in the future dlcs)

How other user says, the MTs didn’t increase the playerbase on any platform because when the possible new players see the paid skins would run away when even the first DLC pack was released yet.

New users will leave because I bought a sweet skin?
These must be some ridiculously cool skins if it’s making someone so envious they can’t play.

I’m so confused haha

I was a bit upset that the skins I have been wanting for so long were announced to require real money, but now I guess I’m just glad I’ll for sure be able to get the skins I want (Thorn, Kelvin). Glad to support the game as well and to find out that the season pass missions will come with exclusive skins and taunts by playing the mission makes me happy as well as it sounds less rng than the pack currently I hope.

You have to consider what a potential new player would look at with Battleborn.

The base game is still $60 on Steam, for example. The Digital Deluxe edition is $75 and it comes with a Season Pass. When new people see this, they assume that paying a bit extra confers the extras as indicated in the advertisement. However, if they do a little bit of research, they find out that $75 will in fact not buy them everything currently available in the game, and that an additional $70, minimum, worth of content is hidden within the game itself. DLCs for other games, like CK2 which has hundreds of dollars worth of DLC, are very clearly indicated on the Steam Store page. It is very clear that these things are separate and apart from their base game. With Battleborn, it is not immediately clear that the game has additional content that requires real currency, not simply in-game grinding.

So a potential buyer sees this and thinks ā€œWhat am I actually getting for this $75? Why do I need to pay an extra $70 to buy things in a game I already purchased?ā€

It’s a tricky issue, on the one hand if people want to pay more for doll clothes, that’s fine and the doll clothing industry is huge across a variety of real and virtual platforms…

On the other, adding MT’s quickly is a very bad sign, not just in its general suckiness in the gaming community as a whole, but also for a game barely a month out of launch. Add in the lack of communication about this and conflicting info about the skins in the first place…

It’s also very likely that it will quickly involve into maybe not full pay to win, but pay to get advantage in terms of loot packs and character exp upgrades. It will be an easy argument for them to say you could get it in game anyway (like Leg loot packs and character exp).

I was thinking more about this the other day and was wondering why there was little fuss about Borderlands 2 paid skins. I’m not sure where they came into the game lifecycle, but I think the game was more established at that point. I do think the current unhappiness over this is more a reflection of the ambivalence people have for the game in general. People want to like the game more than it probably deserves and instead of more maps or a better PvE experience, all we are getting is a sales pitch for doll clothes. The two are likely not related (the season pass/DLC team is totally on schedule (or not) for all we know and they also likely have nothing to do with the team adding the paid doll clothes), but I think unease with one is bleeding into unease for the other…

Okay I think I’m getting it. Do you think if it was in the marketplace at release there would be the fuss?

I’m just speculating… I do think if it was either in the game at launch or if it was clearly stated in the Pre-order announcement that paid skins/taunts will be added shortly and that they were not included in the digital deluxe/season pass version, then there would have been a little grumbling at the time, but people’s general excitement for the game would have caused them to overlook it and they wouldn’t be saying much now because this would have been clearly established pre (or at) launch… Instead, all previous announcements were in regards to that these skins would be available later, with no mention you would have to pay separately for them… I keep going back to the issue not being about the doll clothes themselves (which are barely relevant or blown out of all importance) and it being more about general unease with the game in general…

Thank you. That makes perfect sense.

Who asks you to be mad? The issue is, albeit phrased differently by different folks, is that we not only paid full price for the game but also forked over money for season pass and now GB is attempting to imply that we are not receiving the full, complete, and unabridged experience. Experience customarily associated with the commercial buzzwords ā€œfull game,ā€ ā€œseason pass,ā€ and ā€œdigital deluxe.ā€ It takes a few wrong folks to get pissed and ā€œconsumer fraudā€ may become an issue.
