Has anyone considered that maybe Randy did everything he could to prevent this, but can’t legally say anything about it because corporate contracts? Maybe he literally had no choice?
Just my wild speculation, obviously. Take it with a large bag of salt.
Well, turns out I can’t. Because Amazon or Gamestop in Germany only seem to get the standard editions. The standard edition is functionally useless for me as I refuse to hand over payment information to the Shoddy Store and so wouldn’t get the DLC anyways.
EDIT: A small correction, at least for GameStop Germany, they only get the standard Edition for PC. They do have the Deluxe and Collectors for PS4 and XBone tho’. Except I own neither of these console and don’t plan on changing that.
(I am assuming that 6 months from now Epic has fixed their questionable behavior to the point that I’d let their executable run on my PC)
I would buy Super Deluxe or Collectors Edition if I could. Hell, I’d stuff the necessary cash into an envelope and air mail it to Randy himself - I’d still regard that as more secure than entrusting payment information online.
Seriously what the hell. I wouldn’t be as upset if the Shoddy Store offered store credit I could buy at, say, GameStop (Just like Steam does) but because the Shoddy Store doesn’t I’d resigned myself to having to pre-order the most expensive deluxe edition* because that way I’d able to get at least all the DLC on offer before the inevitable Steam release**. Except it seems I can’t do that because Germany is too small a market to warrant a box release of an collectors edition?
Thanks a bunch.
EDIT2: I guess what I am saying is this: For me BL3 launches April 2020, after a 6 month beta.
Because Season Passes tend to be the thing the highest price tier gets.
** At which point, if there wasn’t a possibility of Key Transfer between Shoddy Store and Steam, I’d probably buy everything all over again. Yes, I’d rather spend more money than give out payment information.
Security is absolutely ■■■■■■■ terrible, there was countless cases of people getting hacked
Their refund policy is garbage, refusing refunds even if you meet their criteria
Partially owned by Tencent, a company that sells their users’ private information mined through tracking cookies to the Chinese government
They pay publishers for exclusivity to force people to use their ■■■■■■ platform
They make you pay a transaction fee before purchasing the game
Some games are more expensive than usual based on Epic’s regional pricing
Epic’s Terms of Service allows them to steal monetization from any content that has something to do with their platform, like for instance SELLING THE MODS YOU MADE FOR THE GAMES ON THEIR PLATFORM.
TL;DR : never consider downloading this terrible piece of software.
Just wanted to stroll in and comment so maybe community mods/devs/sales manager whoever maybe, reads.
If BD3 is going to be an EPIC store exclusive I’m not going to buy the game. I did purchase a shitload of stuff for BD2, even for friends, not only me. I did this on steam because I’m using this platform for a long time now and never got scammed, my information never got stolen, the games I played in multiplayer had bonkers servers to play on… [list goes on].
I’m fine with BD2 beeing in the EPIC store. It’s just I won’t ever use this platform. Heck, I’d even stop playing video games before downloading this crap.
That’s because of the recent (non-fictional) data breaches, GDPR in case of the EU playerbase, exclusive practices in general I won’t support unless it’s a developers launcher and general downsides of the platform itself. If BD3 is going to be a 60€ game I’d be happy to pay the 20% additional fee to get it on steam, I simply don’t care. Because 20% is about that what EPIC gives more than steam does in the beginning of the game sales.
Clarification: Steam takes 30% of the 60€ in the beginning, EPIC does 10%, at least that was my last information, so 6€ compared to 18€. So now it gets tricky, BD3 is 54€ revenue on EPIC, this means I’d buy the game for 54/70%=77,15 on Steam for it to be equaily profitable. Ofc this is just from a standpoing of a player and not salesman behind the curtains.
Is probably where you’d need to go to grab the publishers attention for matters like this. As I believe final say on platforms and what stores falls to them.
I posted this on reddit, it took a while to type out so I’m just gonna reuse it cause it sums up my thoughts really well.
I’d say that I’m very sad right now but I’m actually not, I’d say I’m severely disappointed that 2k made Borderlands 3 an exclusive on EGS for now. If it’s eventually released on Steam then my issue is, do I buy the game I’ve been looking forward to for years or do I simply not give them any of my money and never play the game. I should mention that I haven’t played BL2 in years but when I stopped I had over 2200 hours in the game if that’s any indication of how much I enjoy the Borderlands series.
This whole thing is extremely sad, I used to be one of the biggest fans of Epic Games starting way back in 1998 with the release of Unreal. I downloaded the very first version of the UT demo released to the public, running it at 800x600 and immediately being hooked. The same thing happened with 2k3, then 2k4 and finally UT3. I was such a huge fan of the company and the UT games that eventually in 2001, I joined the biggest Unreal fan site to support Epic and their games, BeyondUnreal. During 2k3/2k4’s life cycle I became an admin on said site, and besides moderating the forums, I posted Epic/Unreal/Unreal Engine related news (including Borderlands news), ran the weekly FragBU event for the UT community and generally tried to hype up excitement for what Epic was working on next. I eventually moved on as UT3’s life cycle came to an end and BU’s traffic slowed but I made some very good friends during this time: tons of gamers, reporters, game/level designers some did or do still work at Epic that I still talk to 20 years later.
With that said, this post may be lost to the thousands this thread will probably have, but just know that I don’t hate Epic games, I just don’t support what they are doing right now. Though 2k… that’s another story.
I was thinking about posting an article on BU about this, but I think if I do, I’m going to give it a few days so I can process everything and post it with a clear head.
My birthday is the 16th of september and getting the next installment of one of my favourite franchises on my birthday would have been amazing.
I was fully planning on preordering a copy with season pass for me, my kid, my girlfriend and my best friend so we could all go crazy as a birthday celebration.
Being epic store exclusive kind of kills this. Ive been super hyped since the announcement and I kind of just feel depressed now.
All of the security risks and problems the epic store has do not make it a safe platform to use. Add the lack of features and customer support and it becomes more than just unattractive.
I personally have console but everyone else does not so if I did get it on console I’m playing alone.
I’m just sad and empty right now with this.
I was excited and hyped for the first game forever before we got it. We then spent months all playing constantly.
The release of the second one was such an awesome time I still love the amazing feelings I got from first exploring that ice shelf with claptrap running his mouth.
I dont even know what to think right now. I really just needed to let this out. This has certainly cost them money from me. Ive bought this franchise probably 10 times with each game for me and other people and was planning 4 more. I am not even sure I will get one now. Sorry gearbox.
The thread was locked I believe previously because it was made before the official release announcement and people were going on tangents over a couple small images that were briefly viewable. However we now see with the pre-orders it was accurate at this point that PC is only being offered through the Epic store. I feel this needs to stay open. Maybe if the thread gets big enough someone at gearbox will point it out to 2K that they may need to rethink that decision. Basically we need to try multiple routes on this to try and get a change. This thread and forum is one of them
That was the consensus of the moderator team. We’d encourage folks to keep the discussion about Epic in this one thread, as it’s easier for the devs and community team to track just one than to parse info from a scattershot of threads and posts.
And I’ll repeat that the issue is in the hands of 2K, as I understand things, so would also suggest that folks posting concerns here might do well to do so on 2K’s forum instead.
There are even petitions on Change.org, I guess that’s as effective as anything else I could suggest.
I posted on the 2k forums but since that place looks like a ghost town I’ve decided to post it here as well. I will not be buying Borderlands 3 as a result of this exclusivity deal. This practice of buying exclusives is terrible and the epic store is abismal as well as Epic being a ■■■■ company I will NEVER give money to. If I worked at Gearbox I’d be begging 2k to drop the exclusivity deal. I may consider buying the game when exclusivity is over but honestly this whole thing makes me want to pass on this game entirely now. This kind of thing is how you lose huge swaths of fans. I hope sales tank, you’ll deserve it if they do.
I am a HUGE fan of borderlands, over 200 hours in BL2 alone. As excited as I am for BL3 (super excited) I will not buy it while its on Epic Store. I have said this about all the games I really wanted, but for me a 1 year exclusive deal should not be rewarded and I am sticking to my guns about waiting till its on steam.
It feels really bad to be dumped on by the publisher/dev in this way… its a cancer in the industry to propagate exclusivity. It helps no one (other then epic and their market share). The revenue split is awesome, yay to devs/epic for that… but the moment you hold my favorite form of entertainment ransom behind your exclusive storefront I say “Shut up, your not taking my money.”
Heart if you are like me, and truly will boycot epic, even when it steals your favorite franchises away from you. I’ll be waiting for you BL3… come to steam soon okay?
I noticed how abysmally empty the 2k forum was as well.
Epic in themselves I don’t feel is a bad company. However everything I see about the EGS itself points to it being complete garbage and the people in charge of the EGS specifically need to rethink how they want to appear to consumers because ultimately at this rate they will end up being like those physical stores that still had high demand or rare games on their shelves because people just refused to buy from them due to lack of service and/or trust in the store.
have to agree with other posting the same. Been a fan of the BL games since i got BL2 back in 2012. racked up 1k hours on just bl2 alone, and i’d love to call it the best game i’ve played this decade. sorry gearbox, but i’ll be boycotting your game until it’s no longer an “exclusive”. it doesn’t matter that epic games promise to get features on their launcher, because currently they don’t have them.
Listen here’s the hard truth, all of us here all love the franchise and 2k knows it, in the end your gonna buy it on whatever launcher you choose, 2k also knows that, so in the end gearbox and 2k are getting a win win situation, they get the 30 million or however much the exclusivity deal was and then they get the 60 million from steam, plus sales on the EGS. The epic games store will also get consumer growth and they will benefit aswell. It’s a perfect business plan, and if you think the company cares about money over you well your wrong, they are a company and they care about money, and from a business point of view this plan they have right now is simply outstanding and will maximize revenue growth to its entirety.
