Should we discuss what happens if BL3 is Epic Store exclusive?

People always say “it’s good competition for Steam” how? Steam is already a much better platform than the Epic store, all Epic has going for them is exclusivity. Valve isn’t sweating and thinking “oh my god, the Epic store has so many amazing features, we really need to up our game!”. Literally the only benefit is that Epic is sniping exclusivity on games.

As consumers, we are forced into a worse user experience, just because companies only see us as dollar signs.

Just as a reminder to ALL posters, here is what Randy tweeted recently:

Please direct any questions, concerns, complaints, or requests appropriately.

Thanks!

Randy’s comment feels like he’s playing a get out of jail free card here. I doubt Gearbox is completely out of the loop of controlling how their creation meets the world.

I am personally boycotting the game till the true release date of April 2020, not because of competition but spyware. Recently there have been Reddit postings and news of spyware being put on computers with the epic store. The spyware is from tencent, a Chinese company which works directly with the Chinese government.

I would love to play the game…don’t get me wrong. I’ve been waiting for years for this addition, but I don’t want people spying on my computer and definitely not a foreign government.

I hope the boycott…that is definitely going to happen…helps show how ineffective the epic store is and helps prove that games should be open and sold everywhere.

I understand that valve takes a larger cut…but being a big company with their own publishing sector…how much would they be losing in PC sales compared to their PS4 and Xbox sales.

Just wanted to vent and announce that I am waiting and willing to pay for the game in April 2020!

I believe that for most of the Gearbox team, but Randy has been very open about his support of Epic, so I’m not quite sure I’d let him off the hook.

Randy’s comment is most direct I’ve ever seen him address the partnership with 2K/Take Two. So it could also be seen as a measure of frustration.

I’m kind of sure that 85% of the gearbox staff is against this stuff. Personal opinion, not reflecting reality or talking on behalf of someone from gbx

Well the only way game publishers will learn is by hitting them in the 1 spot they care about…the wallet.

I will not be buying my favorite series of all time until it is half-off on steam. I know some don’t care but this is huge to me.

If we could get enough people that refuse to buy it, especially the preorder, maybe game companies will take notice.

And you STILL can’t tell me that Gearbox, and Randy, didn’t have some say. That is a very narrow minded way of thinking and conveniently lets Randy escape all blame. Did we hear him say ANYTHING other then he didn’t mind a 6 month exclusive? Nope he basically agreed with 2k and epic.

Again, if you really want to take a stand then DO NOT BUT THE EXCLUSIVE GAME.

I will miss it as much as anyone here but I will be waiting now.

A couple reasons I personally don’t buy non-Steam stuff:

  • Hate trying to keep up with 19 different passwords. (Especially when other launchers won’t let me even use my standard password methods.)
  • Hate having to remember which game was purchased through what store. (I have three copies of Invisible War because of this.)
  • If some random new storefront goes out of business, I just lost all those games. (Though if Epic eventually becomes a mainstay, this reason will lose strength.)
  • Hate having to open 19 different launchers on a regular basis to make sure all my games are up to date so I can actually play them when I want. (Some MMOs sold on Steam have this problem anyways. EQ2 and STO, e.g., have a launcher within a launcher. Eww.)

(19 is an approximate, and probably hyperbolic, number. I can think of 7 launchers currently installed off the top of my head though, and I don’t touch 5 of them because it’s just a hassle. But I know of several more I’ve never touched precisely because of the issues above.)

That said, I certainly wouldn’t mind if Steam got some improvements in a number of areas, and healthy competition could be good for everyone. But I don’t think exclusive releases are a good thing. I still don’t own any of the Halo games after they completely ruined the PC release of the original due to the Xbox. (To be fair, Halo wouldn’t exist without the Xbox, but delaying the PC release a year, then leaving out coop mode when it did finally release, just took away all my interest in the series.)

It is also possible that 2K is standing-in/being-used as a scapegoat. Since Randy does not say his position exactly we can assume he is also possibly for the idea of the exclusive deal with Epic.

Not sure where they need to improve…

And competition is great except steam is worlds above epic…the only competition is the money epic is paying to get exclusives? Why should steam lower margin to epics level when they have put millions more into their platform making it easily the best on the market?

Thats like saying Honda needs to lower prices to Hyundai because competition…no thanks I will always buy Honda as it is million times more dependable…

So how do you expect this competition to begin? Seems like landing yourself a big title is a way

September 13 is a long way away. I am hyped but it is a lot of effort for me to pre-order with epic store so for now I will just sit back and wait and see how this unfolds. I think I am about to be banned from these forums anyway. So there is that.

This 100%!!!

Randy does all the selling for this game I do not believe in ANY way 2k wouldnt have listened to him…and if he thought this was a mistake he should have enough balls to not support it like he has.

If HE showed any remorse I would maybe consider buying from epic, but he is making excuses so he can take the blame also!!

By offering even a fraction of what steam does, and the one thing they CAN offer is customer support which they have none.

I can start selling a new phone that is garbage and make it free, I dont call that competition

But what if that phone has a feature you really really want?

I don’t consider buying an app that is exclusive and putting it on a garbage phone as competition. It is still garbage that I am throwing money at to get people to use

And just to be clear, i don’t play on PC anymore so this doesn’t affect me. But i do agree it was a bad move by whoever made the decision. Sad to see it killed the hype for this game

Yeah point taken. Idk about all of the allegations against Epic. But having my library split up is not something i’d be very fond of either. Price to pay for the advantages of pc gaming i guess.

Just a quick reminder.

Critiques, thoughts, ideas, approvals, contradictions, and debates; All welcome, especially when leveled towards GBX and it’s associates. Feedback is necessary and this forum is a fantastic way to get it.

Insults, namecalling, impromptu character morality assessments, Machiavellian plot theories etc. Not really welcome, and I think a bit useless in the long run.

If there is anything you have to say which requires the latter, it probably wasn’t worth saying. Don’t forget I am a GBX customer, not a GBX employee and I don’t always agree with every decision, but the last thing I’d do (especially as a business owner myself) is go about it by pockmarking a few insults in, especially in the speculative stage.
