• We know that it erupted throughout Pandora when the BL1 vault was opened (BL2)
  • We know that it was a major part of the prison keeping the Destroyer trapped (which is also basically Pandora) (BL3)
  • We know that the entire Eridian race was consumed in the process of trapping the Destroyer (BL3)

My speculation is that it’s basically the remains of the Eridians after whatever the original Leech/Destroyer did to them when the Destroyer was lured and trapped in the first place.

In support, I offer the purple “husks” left behind all over the Borderverse by Tyreen’s incessant leeching.

Now that’s interesting evidence for this particular theory, for sure. I never even thought about it.

I just assumed they were like the Anointed enemies?

Anointed Enemies are what happens when Thoughtlock gets used on someone and they also get charged up with Eridium power in the process. It’s not unlike the Ascended Lost Legion Soldiers who inhale some sort of gas from the eridian ruins on Elpis to become super powered and the Seraph Guardian’s aka Hyperius and Gee in BL2.

Also note that although we don’t really see that much eridium in BL1 (even though it’s retconned in as the stuff Dahl found that prompted Atlas to muscle in and take over, and brought Hyperion along sniffing at their heels), we do see plenty of purple veins running through the stones used to build the visible Eridian structures.

Of course, there’s been a whole lot of “Oh, what if that thing from BL1 was actually…” going on between BL2, TPS, TftB, and now BL3.

The other interesting thing is the parallels between what Eridium seems to have become and the evolution of what Lyrium is in the Dragon Age series. In DA2 (and especially in the DLC) we find out that it’s basically alive in some way, and can be corrupted by the taint (making it red lyrium). AND that it can have different effects on different races. AND that there’s a deeper mystery about it waiting to be revealed (although whether DA4 addresses that is anyone’s guess given that certain key writers have left the building a while back).

Qualitatively different. The husks are almost like an eridium dust shell, but the anointed are so infused with eridium that they crystallise out when they die.

All interesting ideas and ones that I had not even really thought about. I’d venture to guess that 99% of the entire franchise fan base would have no clue what we’re talking about right now. :joy:

Also, I have been meaning to post about this for a while, but I am pretty sure Eridians are depicted in the statues we see all around Nekrotafayo, but the scale of the statues is a red herring. Did you all notice the Bug-like Gold statues that are larger in some places, but when depicted near statues of sirens and humans are small?

I took screen caps I have long since misplaced to show them, and make a case that maybe the Eridians were hyper-intelligent insectoid hominids.

I have not noticed that, but I certainly noticed the huge-ass skeletons all over BL2. Hammerlock DLC, etc. What the hell are those? Need explanation. There has been none as far as I know. They are “way more than raid boss” levels of large.

The desert ones were Aquatic ones that were there when those were actual oceans according to lore. And I found my screen grabs.

In the Destroyer’s Rift Vault, aka the biggest one, The Bug is the hugest of any in the game, with the adjacent mural of all the people and a Siren like figure.

On Pure of the Stars, the Siren is huge, with an itty bitty bug next to it.

There are gamers, and then there are the diehard.

Doesn’t seem necessary to say which group we belong to.

I’ve always theorized that eridium is naively the lifeforce of Pandora and, like @Isthiswill mentioned, the Eridians themselves in a form akin to pure energy. That theory was confirmed for me when, as @VaultHunter101 mentioned, annointed enemies completely crystallized upon death.

I’d liken it to Gaia as it pertains to Earth in many belief systems of the real world.

The oceans are no longer on Pandora because Mister Torgue Flexington blew them up.

My Full Metal Alchemist Thread was all about that. And if you all have never watched either version of Full Metal Alchemist Anime, you should.

BT dubs I am doing a story replay of BL2 right now, first time since BL3 launched I think. It’s interesting to look back knowing what we know now about BL3 and also Tina.

I am trying to slide and mantle. A lot. And I realized I like the ASE anointment system and the game loop it creates. Still like slag.

So much food for thought here, to be sure, but this one’s really going to blow your mind: @Isthiswill is actually the real Tannis. O_O

It’s really hard to interpret in-game “art” - there’s very little context.

Still, I’ll agree with @jacksdemise: I thought I was a Borderlands lore nerd, but @Isthiswill might be the actual Tannis :joy:

This was fun, I enjoyed the conversation. 10/10 would recommend.

“What’s your last name?”

“Flexington!”

Best. Last. Name. Ever.

Honestly, this forum has provided a lot of insight since I’ve been active here, but even more so there were three key Youtubers who did great lore content, and a fourth I’m blanking on:

Lone Vault Hunter
Hayder Hype
Eruption Fang

In that order each one did a great job of curating lore info for the games before moving on to other things spanning the time from the end of Bl2 support and TPS to the UCP era until the launch of BL3, and from then till current for the latter of the three.

Between their ideas, great info here, and my own observations I have had a chance to revel in my favorite thing, spinning yarns from the stories in these games. And yes, this was fun @tysonyar , @jacksdemise & @VaultHunter101 who always sharpens my focus and corrects my off base tangents with important details I tend to sideline.

And now more screen shots of statues:

Pyre of the Stars is the one where the “Nyriad” statues have the small Bug next to it, and large bugs elsewhere which got me to thinking maybe they were small after all.

All the actual Vaults we open by fighting a Creature are identical inside, other than the type of chests in a couple:

They feature the Giant Bug with the mural below, and there’s this one detail of the small figure wit the gem…

The one different Vault is the Vault of the Serpent in Tanzadeer Ruins. The Sky is different, and internally it has no human figures, only bug ones.

The exterior temple has a mixture of both in most rooms, with one room that features the odd statues that hold the gems with the humans normally under the Nyriad Statue, but neither Nyriad or Bugs. Of course there’s the corpse of the Serpent, which Eruption Fang had a great theory about.
