Starting from that config the only things I would swap are a larger SSD, 250GB is really the minimum for OS + some games nowadays, and a stronger GPU. It’s probably good enough as it is for Homeworld but with 20-30% more budget you can seriously improve a lot that rig.
It’s closer to 1500-2000$ that parts start to be overpriced for the increases you get, below 1000$ any pricier piece is a god-send.

If you have another computer that can play homeworld, hopefully you will soon be able to stream it to your mac and play. Right now steam just gives us green screens with hw:r, but that should be fixed soon (I hope)
Being an opengl game it shouldn’t be hard to port to OSX, but if you really want a fix, it should be possible to install the windows version of steam in wineskin, and then install homeworld. OpenGl games tend to run great in wine.
