So... Sentry targeting

Does anyone here have any insight as to how the Sentry’s AI chooses targets to prioritize? I have 200+ hours in PvP alone and I still haven’t been able to quite figure it out

I’m pretty sure minions and thrall pull all aggro when theyre in line of sight. Outside of that I believe it’s first target it sees and then whoever is doing the most damage.

Priority #1: Me.

Priority #283: anything else.

See that’s what you would think, but that’s not always the case. This is actually the reason I felt compelled to post. I’ve played games where we get double thralls, let them get into range, and then when I go to follow up and lay into the sentry the sentry straight up ignores the thralls to try and kill me. The same goes for when I’m defending. I’ve been in games where the enemy gets double thralls but the sentry just ignores them the entire time and it gets melted. So I’m sitting here with a dead sentry and two shielded thralls. So what’s the deal?

Nope. It’s random. There were minions and my teammates attacking the sentry, but the moment I turned the corner to heal someone I got nuked.

It’s wonky and doesn’t work properly I know
But I’m fairly certain that’s how it’s SUPPOSED to work

I don’t think my sentries have ever shot anyone. Even when three people are killing you right in front of it with nothing else around or dancing around attacking it with melee while it has a nap.

If I poke my head around a corner in the middle of a 5v5 fight with three thralls and an army of minions at their doorstep best believe their sentry is railgun headshotting me instantly.

I even got killed by two sentry blasts through the wall on the sniper perch in Overgrowth the other night…

The railgun explodes when it hits a wall. I’m willing to bet that you were too close to the wall on the other side and the explosion got you through the wall. Happens on that particular perch and on the backdoor ledge on Monuments where that little half-wall is

It would be nice if someone could summon a dev so they can chime in on the matter lol

Pinging the magical @JoeKGBX and @Jythri for your awesome insight!

From what I’ve seen, if your sentry is being attacked by just a random battleborn, it’ll target them. If the sentry is being attacked by multiple battleborn, it’ll attack the one doing the most damage. If you or a teammate is taking a moderate amount of damage within the sentries line of sight, your attacker takes priority over all else.

I have been taken out in less than 1 second as Kleese with full shields and health WHILE minions were in front of me

pretty much sure it targets me, and only me. Even mine… :frowning:

It can’t be a DPS thing. I’m being targeted as Miko out of a full a$$ crowd and I practically get one shotted.

They got some splainin’ to do.

I’ve been nuked by my own sentry before. ;v; Reyna did nothing wrong.

I would love some understanding of this as well. It seems worse on Monuments than on Outgrowth or Echelon. For a long time I assumed that the sentry would target whoever was doing the most damage to it, but I’m positive that I’ve been sniped without having hit it at all–while other battleborn and minions have been attacking it. I’ve died many times with it sniping me from a long distance, where I didn’t even realize it could hit me.

Conversely, I’ve had enemies chase me back to my sentry where they have gone completely ignored while attack me. I’ve run laps around my sentry, thinking that it would help, only to watch it do nothing. This has really given me the impression, which I see other people get as well, that I am somehow pre-marked for sentry agro. It just happens so frequently that the people it should be attacking are ignored while I face imminent death as soon as I step into line of sight.

As far as i know it works like every MOBA. The sentry will attack minnion 1st, and attacks players after all the minions are gone. However if you attack a player from the other team the sentry will automatically target the first attacker. This is called “hugging” means if you low life, and can’t recall you can let yourself get hit to make the sentry auto attack players.
