This is a great summary, I have far too many similar stories. This is why I tend to stick to Quick Match where I’m able to operate a bit more independently and not as reliant upon or hindered by bad teammates. The reality is Incursion is a team oriented mode and if your teammates aren’t carrying their weight, they’ll sink you. Teaming up isn’t about stomping (for me at least), it’s about ensuring your teammates have a general level of competence and aren’t going to handicap you. Also the most fun I’ve had is when I’m a full team playing against another full team. I think most teams prefer when matchmaking does the job properly. When I have a team I prefer to play Incursion but I’m usually solo so I’m usually in Quick Match. Personally I hate the effect solo/duo has on the queues because it makes the Incursion queue less fun by not allowing teams in the more team oriented mode and it makes the more relaxed/casual queue less fun by turning it into a more competitive setting. In my personal experience, solo/duo has done nothing to improve the quality of my Incursion matches and only highlights how much teammates who don’t grasp or care about team comp and strategy can hurt you. If I want to play solo, I personally feel Quick Match already provides that environment for me and solo/duo actually takes it away.
Which is another good point, one I have advocated in many of my few posts here on the forums. Incursion is the popular game mode on Battleborn. Most of the competitive premades play there. I personally, as well as many others, consider that game mode to be the competitive mode (while the other game modes can get competitive, it doesn’t have the aspect that you mentioned).
Incursion it is an absolute NEED to have a full team of people who know what they’re doing. Even examples like Vagrant’s Oscar Mike. He may not know how to do things well, but he knew what the basics were and how to do it. Having a poor player who cannot carry their own makes the mode intolerable to play in and thus, this is what spawned a lot of the premades you know today. We got really sick and tired of playing with people who cannot play at level above sub par.
Another problem with the whole Solo/duo queue is that the either dip into Quickplay until the day is over, resulting in all the Premades showing up and stomping in there or they break up and try to go into Duo/solo queue to play with or against each other. @Nemosis327 and I have done this to try and play against each other tons of times, but ended up on the same team the majority of the time. So it’s flawed regardless.
I will put in my $.002 here and say that I have made it a point to play on Wednesdays since they started the solo queue idea. I had great hopes for it. What I have found, though, is that there are hardly any players below 100 in the solo queue, and I get stomped harder than ever there. If I bop over into the quick match, where I usually have better success with getting more balanced matches, I almost always get matched up with a bunch of low lever players and placed against five 130 CR and up players, so I get stomped harder than ever there, too. I don’t think that the solo queue does anything to help.
So if I may ask, what is it you’re looking for? To not get stomped/beaten? Everyone loses, the good players at the game are just good. Whether or not they are in premades.
That’s how matchmaking is currently designed to function.
Game groups players of similar cr for some reason > game uses elo to find opposing team (but elo rn is essentially off, for all intents and purposes)
It’s why we cant have public matches on pc. The game will consistantly put the same people together, favouring something (I don’t know that its cr), so theres never a shake up in that department. you can have the same 10 people q on pc, and it will make the same teams every time.
I am looking to not get stomped over and over again. I don’t really care if I win or lose, but I don’t like getting the crap kicked out of me time after time.
Does solo queue use matchmaking? Quick match certainly does not.
My two recommendations are this then:
- Keep practicing and get very good at the game so you can carry/win nearly on your own
- Get with a group that is good/coordinated so you and that group can make competitive games (win or lose) or beat the other premades out there.
Trying to break up the premades to make it easier/harder to get beaten really bad isn’t the answer.
That’s the problem with solo queueing. If you can’t win a match by yourself, then your only hope is to get random with someone who can. At least on a regular basis- because even if every single matchup in your life is between teams of equal skill - you can still lose every single one of those matches.
Getting better as a player individually is the best remedy for this. How you get better is up to you, as everyone learns differently, but if winning is your desire, then you’ll want to start by min/maxxing and leveraging every asset to do so. As your skills get better you can lay off the handicaps of using only the best things.
Most of us who are still here aren’t here because we didn’t want to lose. We just like playing, or want to use the game as a means to hang out with friends.
Ice is one of the only players I know who gets tilted if he loses. XD And he’s VERY good so it’s pretty hard to see him get that way.
edit: i see it makes it sound like i meant just for winning, i guess what i avoided saying is that, like in every other game on the market, matchmaking sucks, and most of your matches are going to be unequally matched no matter what, in a game with as steep a learning curve, and as wide a skill ability as BB.
The number of players in this game is probably too low to have enough queue variety to please everyone.
Personally I would like to see them stop with the queue rotations and simply make Quick Match permanently be for solo/duo only. That way the people complaining about 5 man teams can play the game modes that don’t require 5-man coordination the way Incursion does. I’m sure this wouldn’t suit everybody, I guess if you like QM with a full group, but then you either play Incursion where your teamwork can be fully utilised or break up the party and hope to face each other in QM.
Console players have generally convinced themselves that ‘Incursion’ is a team mode and the Quick Match triumvirate are great for solo players. I think this is quite a bit of group-think and silliness, but that’s probably irrelevant.
This thinking, even if I think it’s crazy, has basically provided them with a more group oriented queue and a more solo/small-group friendly queue. Even if it’s not enforced, they have segregated themselves a bit and with the buffer of higher population than on PC, they’ve basically partially solved the problem of a lack of good matchmaking as a community. The only real sacrifice is if you actually don’t buy that a complex 2-lane game needs less teamwork than a simple 1-lane mode…well but I digress.
As long as they live under what seems like utopia to a PC player, they’re going to constantly malign the clear need for a solo/duo queue. It’s not even up for debate, every other MOBA has solo/duo or otherwise takes pains not to pair the people who want to do team play vs competitive soloers or new players, and this game should to. But until their numbers go down and they are forced into the one-queue solution (let me be clear, I hope this never happens for their sake) they won’t understand how bad it is and the refrain of ‘git gud’ will continue to drool out of their lips repeatedly.
Ps4 here, I’ve actually come to the point that I think quick match is more supportive of “pubstomps” than incursion.
I agree to an extent. Meltdown camping at the base camps? Face Off is THE pubstomp game mode of the planet. And don’t even get me started on Capture.
I feel all 4 PvP game modes can be pub stomps - it’s just that incursion lasts longer so it’s more painful.
The reason many people think it isn’t pubstomp city there is
- More low levels so more even games in general
- Less “team dependent” so good pre mades aren’t as prevalent (related to point 2)
- It’s over quicker so it’s more merciful (this is true EXCEPT for Face Off which can be extended even to a worse extent than Incursion).
Of all the abuses I’ve seen in BB, nothing has come close to seeing some behavior that dominating FACE OFF teams display towards the end of a lopsided match.
The only other thing BB needs is actual Match Making. I play Solo Queue a lot, and it has made BB less fun recently. You know, with the stomp or be stomped meta? Yeah, it bothers me when 5 Mans just run into a match and stomp just to wait for MM to try again. I also would like to add that sometimes, good players can TEACH people. I know, crazy idea giving others advantages, but it helps with BB’s main problem, a lacking Playerbase.
Like, even Star wars Battlefront (the one by EA with more than 10 queues) has a better playerbase and MM time.
But my final point is that not all 5 mans are good. Sure some are, but I think that in general every BB player wants to expeirence the back and forth matches, the leveling up helix decisions, and the LOL you get from BB. As such, we need to strive to teach others, but to not give up. If us Vets have to play very defensivly so we can let others have a ‘Shot’, go ahead. It may seem suicidal, but in reallity, if you could stomp in 5 mins, spread it out over the 30 minute match.
Though the fact the BB has balence issues (For more than a year) that are ‘Being looked into’ Makes me skeptical about the future BB holds for me. And Maps need fixing too, as well as the servers. Its these reasons that I play Overwatch now every other night, and BB every other week. (IT TOTALLY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH EVENT BOXES, I SWEAR!)
Well said, except for the part about our current meta. You make it sound like the CC = WIN Meta is new and HASN’T been here since Day one…
Its another reason why Alani was OP off release…
Awesome response. I agree. MM needs to be fixed. Its the largest hinderance to this game that isn’t Gameplay oriented.
I don’t even need strict ELO MM.
Just scrap the whole 5 Mans queued first, then four, then 3, then 2, and solo queuers. It just makes teams of randoms that fight other teams with no way of actually setting an oposition.
I wish it queued all 10, then split up based on ELO. Sure, 3 guys group together, but they might get newer players to balence opposing team with 2 guys (avg. ) together and 1 vet and 2 other avg. If the total score is relativly close, the system is good. Matches might actually be close.
In the early life of the game the meta wasn’t revolving around CC. There was a ranged meta with Oscar Mike, Thorn and ISIC dominating it since all of them could clear wave with no effort.
To be fair though it wasn’t as common. It’s only been in the past few months that there has been a significant surge in the exploitation of the CC meta. Of course that is anecdotal information.
I’ve tried it more than you think. And not even just against you. Fighting people I know is always a good time where you live or die by the randoms
People aren’t looking to break them up they would just play with one another and your wrong about the outcomes. No amount of skill can upset a coordinated team. So the real outcomes are join a team or quit.
