Split screen co-op!... Buy me a bigger TV? No...?

Hello there!

So I’m not the only one pointing this out… Yes, I’ve seen/read the other topics (why not just comment there?)

While I’m loving solo play modes, I do also enjoy playing co-op split screen style with my partner in crime… Or badassness in this context.

But… while I’m happy with the size of my TV, and it functions very well with Borderlands split screen co-op, Battleborn says ‘no’.

Get a bigger TV? Buy a second one with another PS4 system?.. I could, I could… But I’d rather not.

Yes that side mini map, it doesn’t work, eats up space.

Reading the optional time limited objectives (eg. Pick up 30 things in 30 seconds)… Squint worthy (yes, I have glasses to help me see, but they don’t in this case) and even then, unreadable.

The health bar, unreadable, too small, contrast of colours (blue/green) doesn’t work in this compressed space… Can see the bars go down, but can’t read the number figure, before you know you are asking for ‘help/revival’.

Choosing your alignments (yes… I’m not down with the Battleborn terminology yet), your skills, almost unreadable again. Compressed.

Basically… It’s all just… Small.

And I get split screen makes things small… But it’s functioned better in Borderlands, especially 1 & 2 (pre sequel seemed like some things were too big for the screen - like trying to customise your character skin and head - just saying).

Suggestions?

Well I’m not a game maker, just a player… And gearbox normally does all the right tweaking… But…

please whomever might read this consider adding/fixing…

Horizontal/Vertical options.
DONT just shrink the existing solo screen and make it into 2 screens, it needs a whole new layout.
Remove or move the mini map… Even just have it as the ‘up’ control option that brings the map overlay on the screen so IF people want to see/use it, they can do it quickly that way, but it ain’t permanent.
Rework the ‘optional/timed mission objective bubble’, either make it bigger/more readable some how, or have it as a text scroll at the bottom of the screen?
Change the health bar colours, or rework them, as the contrast doesn’t work at the current split screen size (can’t tell how much health you actually have, number wise)
The revive button, too small… Just like the ticking over yellow circle of standing on a platform… Too small when changed from solo full screen to co-op split screen.
Game doesn’t actually ‘pause’ when you go into pause, it should freeze both screens. Even if both players pause, the game continues in the background, so you both end up losing a life.

I can’t think of anything else… But you get the point… ‘Too small, too small’.

BUT! Love the solo story mode play thus far… And I can’t wait to get my preordered copy… Just want better split screen co-op play.

Hopefully these issues will be resolved, as that’s how I’ll be playing Battleborn 90% of the time, with my partner in badassness.

Thanks!

sorry for any typos, and if anyone else thinks of anything… Thumbs up, add it

This might be the biggest con about this game for me. Just from watching gameplay I could tell there was no way this was gonna work well in split screen. Unfortunately I don’t really see that changing much even if they do make some tweaks.

Tried playing the multiplayer modes split screen co-op tonight…
It made me rethink what I had for dinner, as the meal certainly wanted me to experience it again, nauseating…
Sigh, just so much, TOO MUCH, going on…
and that damn side map again… It draws your eye away from the action, and makes it impossible to keep an eye on everything at once.
I don’t think I’ll be revisiting co-op in this mode, one dinner was enough.
If changes are made for the story mode co-op, then split screen will be okay, as two people means you can control the action that’s happening on screen a little better… But changes certainly need to be made.
Otherwise, might have to leave this one to solo play, which means lots of account swapping/shared gaming time.

Glad I’m not the only one wondering about this! I posted in another thread, but to me splitscreen is make or break for purchase, so I just really hope the mode isn’t pawned off as the poor kid who only gets part attention. It’s just not going to work without vertical - the time invested so far in split screen will be totally lost with minimal users otherwise. I have utter faith in Gearbox though so will reserve judgement now until D-day!

I was very crestfallen when I tried the split screen co-op. So much screen real-estate taken up by that section on the left. I wasn’t expecting that at all.

I was all set to buy Battleborn after playing single player quite a bit, but after checking out the split screen co-op with my fiance I’m just not sure now. Even if we upgraded from our 56" I just don’t think that’d work well. That left section is just so distracting.

I didn’t even know there was split screen for this game… Can anyone tell me how to test it out?

I’m probably not going to explain this very well (forgive me)…
But playing PS4 (the system I use)…
You need two different accounts on the same system (yours, and say your brothers, sisters, partners? Obviously not a shared account)…
Turn on each controller and select your account/log in…
Have one person load up the beta, and when in the main screen (where you select either story mode, matches, command centre, and can see a character loaded up)…
There should be up in the top right, your own account name with rank next to it…
And below that, it should have ‘press x to join’…
So player two can press x to join, and log in that way…
Then when player 1 goes into story mode, or a match, it will allow both players to select a character…
Then when the story mode or match starts, the screen will automatically split for each individual to play.
Sorry again about the explaining, I’m not good at these things… If you don’t understand, hopefully someone else here can help you out!

I didn’t think it was that bad, but I do think it would benefit from some options (change to vert) or a re-thinking (make that mini-map less a waste of space).

You explained very well, don’t fret! Unfortunately I forgot to add that I’m on PC, so sorry for the trouble :frowning:
It seems there is no such thing on PC? under my name in the main menu I have the ability to invite an online friend, but no option to enable my controller for split screen. So many games with local split-screen have it only enabled for console, why!!! :pensive:

I am glad to read that I am not the only one who thinks the map in splitscreen is a waste of space. I would rather put it on a button and give it some transparence so you can have a look at it when you are lost . beside that I really enjoy the game

I will just throw myself in here and say I hate it too. More people disliking it, maybe they fix it. Great game though.

After much game play in split screen… I have now gotten used to it…

BUT…

That doesn’t mean it still doesn’t have all the original flaws I pointed out (and other people pointed out on this thread).

I will miss playing it when the beta comes to a close, until May 3 when I can pick up my preorder at my local eb games store in Australia… And I look forward to any changes, hopefully for the good, that may come with it!

Agreed, the size of the mini map in split screen is ridiculous. It is so far removed from the player’s focus that it’s unusable anyway, no matter how much space it takes up.

Just overlay it much smaller, translucent, on a full width screen, as in Borderlands 2 or most other games. As is, it’s a laughable waste of space and makes local co-op nigh impossible.

One of the main reasons we are buying this game is for the co-op split screen.
Please use overlay for maps and info, We are begging you.
At the least it doesnt need to eat up that much screen space

Couldn’t agree more with you OP, its very difficult to play this with my girlfriend as it is now and I really hope they change some things to make it easier to take in the information being given.

Only reason I will buy is for split screen coop!! That’s one of the reasons we love borderlands sooooo much!! Whoever designed the left side of the split screen with that garbage map and a big bunch of nothing has never played split screen!! It is totally worthless!! We play on a 65" inch and the game makes it a 25" for both players! It annoyed me, so I can’t imagine what it looked like for people on a smaller tv. It’s really not rocket science, I mean James Bond Golden Eye got it right over 10 years ago!! Lol

Please fix! No one that plays split screen coop really cares about frame rate or resolution! It is about spending time with your friends and loved ones doing something you enjoy together! Battleborn is a cool game, but that wasted screen sucks!! Haha!!

Though it might be too late, can someone provide a screen capture of what split-screen looks like?

Please please please fix this! Also regarding the minimap, in splitscreen the option to use the full size map doesn’t work.

I’m not sure how to post images… But can see what it looks like at this link. (Grabbed an example from Google)

I am really confused as to why they would do this. I got used to it sure but… It’s still annoying, and ugly.
