Steam "Friend" Servers Go Down - INSTANT Kick

Can someone please explain to me exactly WHY the game requires a CONSTANT connection to the Steam servers in order to be played?

I have done two matches since the game was released so far where I was INSTANTLY kicked out simply because Steam’s friend servers were rolling over one of their standard “2-5 minute maintenance restart” periods…

Anyone else getting this? I get kicked all the way to the game’s title screen (not the main menu with “Command” and such, the TITLE screen).

Yeah this has been an issue the past few days.
Steam for some reason has dropped chat, and when it does I am dropped from the group I am in.
Little frustrating.
Each time this has happens I have had to stop and restart Steam. (just telling it to go online hasn’t worked.

It’s not Steam’s fault, nor is it anything new - Steam often does rolling restarts on it’s friend servers to avoid have to do long periods of downtime… :L
