The reason why I spend points in potent as a pony and made of sterner stuff? Easy answer: Compatibility to the leg. roboteer COM if you want to play really defensively (but i never used this COM…).
And sure, BSS is a risky skill in boss fights. But normally you can spawn some small enemys in each boss fight to refresh your shield. And if you can move and dodge some of the enemy attacks, you don´t really need that skill then.
But if you want you could also remove a point from potent as a pony to spend it on fancy mathematics but not more. It would be a total waste together with BSS. Changed build
And as I said this way to skill is a nice combination between a hig damage output and the possibility to change your COM depending on your playstyle… or which COM you own. For example you can use the leg anarchist to raise your stacks at the beginning of a session, switch it at ~150-250 stacks for a leg. catalyst or mechro to raise your damage until you reach 400 stacks. After that it´s your decision if you equip a SOT COM for 600 stacks (very useful at pyro pete´s bar together with a norfleet and a Sham shield for powerleveling up to 3 people at the same time…everything is one shot with 600 stacks), stay at the equipped COM or play defensively with the leg. roboteer.
That would be the only way i can imagine where a point in fancy mathematics would make any sense. With the SOT COM you get extra points in that skill… should give a try to that but in my opinion you don´t need that points. Just farm 400-600 (depending on the equipment you have…without a fibber you don´t want more than 400 stacks) stacks and you slay each raid boss solo easily even on op8.
I’ve still yet to do any of the raid bosses at OP8 with Gaige- just trying to remember which of them has the fewest minions available to proc BSS, which would make Fancy Mathematics somewhat useful…
Voracidous and Hyperius have just a few minions.
Vermivorous doesn´t spawn anything but normally you find varkids anywhere on the map^^
Terramorphous has enough tentacles, Pyro Pete endless minions you can spawn if wanted. Master Gee just need an alkaline shield.
Dexiduous, Warrior, Wilhelm and others have more than enough enemies around and shouldn´t be a problem.
As I said, one point in fancy mathematics can be helpful with the right COM but i won´t spend more if you have 5/5 in BSS. Maybe i forgot that one point in the past while working on my build.
Why should I spend points to that skill? Look what you get in my build from that skill. If you kill an enemy you get movement speed and Shield recovery. But with 5/5 BSS you only get movement speed and in my opinion the normal speed is more than enough to dodge anything.
So I definitively prefer an extra point in Potent as a Pony. Sure, only 4% more life…but always better than 7 % movement speed for a short while.
And I said in my second post at this thread that I use the Anarchist COM only to raise up to 150-250 stacks. Do you really think that you need movement speed while killing some random opponents on the way to raid bosses? If you only play sessions not longer than an hour then put a point in that skill. Otherwise it´s just a waste of possible life in my opinion^^
Yeah, I know. Some people really like this skill but I have full shield most of the time. And if I want to play Borderlands I take some time so I don´t need the movement speed to get to my targets faster

Nth Degree and Wires Don’t Talk are skills that I always aim for when building Gaige. WDT is multiplicative with Anarchy, so this skills thogeter make guns like the Twister and the Storm shine above others shock weapons.
My shield and grenade are almost always Antagonist and Magic Missile for slag, as Gaige has no slag source outside of maxing out IO and waiting for it stack up. Also, Antagonist stacks Nth Degree.
Nechromancer is the best COM when it comes to WDT and Anarchy, but Legendary Mechromancer is a solid all around COM if you can get one. Catalyst shines when it comes to DoT builds because of EE and EB plus the card bonus.
Also, if you want DT to kill stuff when mobbing you should get SiC and MiS and give him a good Roid Shield. FoTFH spamming is effective too but annoying after some time. Legendary Roboteer isnt a good COM in my opinion, you are better with the two I have mentioned even for DT focused builds.
You can also use a slag O-Negative if you need some more sustain. It saved my butt sometimes while farming hyperius. But yes, a magic missle (×4) is always in the inventory.
And I agree with you. The legendary roboteer is nice to have and a must have for those Who want to finish the collection of legendaries. But it gives you a really defensive playstyle you don’t want and also don’t need with Gaige.
