Lol of course there shouldn’t be. The deterrent is that you don’t get to play until your match finishes anyways, and that’s perfect. What they need to do is fix it so that if you’re gone too long or idle out then you get locked out and your team gets a late join or a buff or something to even things out.
Then all people would have to do is shut down and restart the game or turn off their console and they could quit with no penalty.

I really prefer the system that we have now. Forcing somebody to wait for the match that they were in to finish is perfect. If you legitimately HAVE to go then you don’t get punished for having something come up, but if you just want to rage quit out of the game then you have to wait for the match you were in before you can play anymore anyways, so you might as well just finish it out. Forcing them to stay offline would also mean can’t come back and finish out the match that they quit from, which would make things even worse for their team.

I think a big problem is that you can cheat the current system. Not going to say how but it’s not very hard to do it either. If they fix it up then I think the current system will work just fine. Maybe they can disable singleplayer and private matches if you leave a game as well. (assuming they aren’t already disabled)
If leaving matches continues to be a problem I think they should implement a 30 minute ban from matchmaking for leaving and not being present at the end of the match.

Would it be possible to bind the penalty to the quit command in the menu? Have a pop up come up saying “Quitting will put a [insert time duration] hold for queing to a new match on you. Do you still want to quit?”
That could help prevent true discos from being penalized. Then when you get back on and requeue, if the match is still going it gives you the option to rejoin (like it does now) with the note that if you choose “No” you will have a queue hold placed on you.

That still doesn’t address the edge case of people just closing the game.
People will just close down the game. The system you’re referring to is exactly what The Last of Us has, and people simply close app all the time.
So how do you tell who the rage quitters are, and who the people are like me who have a small baby or child and you gotta leave because one starts crying or something.
Would you rather me leave and another player come in to help or just set my controller down and be afk?

It does if the match is still ongoing. Otherwise, your right. However no fix is going to completely solve this and I’d rather let the really determined get away with it then punish the undeserving.

Thanks for all your input guys. When i think of a good penalty system i think of sm4sh, (or at least the 3ds version idk about the wii u), where it can tell which connection error is a rage quit i.e. closing the system and a genuine bad connection. I feel like this can be done for BB but i’m no developer and don’t know how feasible that would be

In Heroes Of The Storm, when a player leaves their character is replaced by a bot. And when you leave, you get a penalty - you can only join a match with other leavers, until you’ve played through one match without leaving it. I think in the ranked mode you also get time penalties for leaving the game? I haven’t played ranked personally yet, though.
I think how rage quitters are handled in HOTS is excellent.

HotS bots are just feeding the enemies with EXP though. This one will feed even harder.
This game needs to do both what the OP stated and to give people more reason to not quit.
You rage quit or DC? You aren’t allowed to play for X minutes, increasing by Y% every time you leave, counter reset at a certain day at certain time in certain time zone or if you play enough games. (So if you rage quit 5 times today, you end up suffering for it for a whole week)
For those who continue until the end, you earn a certain point that increase how much credit/exp you earn at the end of the game.
Winning the game gives you 3 points.
Losing the game gives you 1 point (so you gain something for playing till the end)
Surrendering before A minutes give you no points. (So no surrender spam)
Leaving a game and not returning, whether by DC or intentional, reset the point.
For each point, you get +1% credit and EXP, up to 50 points for +50%.
Less and less benefit to rage quit

Hm, I forgot to word my post properly! Sorry about that! I was telling what happens in HOTS when a player leaves, so decided to include the added bot player. The bots absolutely suck, I am definitely not calling that excellent! But being forced into a leaver queue is an excellent penalty in my opinion.

Pretty sure that count as a game fail and does nothing to even the game record.

Fail game like this should be treated like DotA cases. DotA has a lot of checkmark before a match can really be registered as an actual match.
-
Anyone having absolutely horrid ping at the start? IF so. MAtch canceled. Everyone can leave. Not recorded
-
Anyone DC’d at the start? IF so. Match canceled.
-
IS the server having issues? If so. Match canceled.
Although it shows as DC, it doesn’t count. If it doesn’t, this is an issue with the game coding itself treating DC and match fail as the same thing, when it shouldn’t. However, there is no match ID anyway and you cannot view the failed game in your match history. This likely means the match is canceled and there is no penalty/reward being handled.
Leaver penalty is already a thing anyway because even if it’s by accident since other people are also harmed by this. Some game even hand you a temp ban if you dc up to X time in Y amount of games. (LoL Leaverbuster)

Better Idea, Quitter forfiet half of their max credit. They are going to suffer like the rest of use.
in story mode i ran into a guy (or gal, he/she was playing montana) that threw himself outside the map, and when we tried to revive him, he had already pressed the respawn button, then he appeared, and threw himself again and respawned, and he got all the remaining lives, and then he disconected. maybe it was a troll but that kind of people DOES need a punishment, because everyone left the game and then it means we all get punished. and that plain sucks.

I know it’s annoying but its just one of necessary evils of playing online with randoms. If you start instituting these harsh penalties you would just create matchmaking problems. It’s hard enough to find a match. This game already has huge potential to go sweaty, so much so people already leave matchmaking when a low level player joins.
Also, I think it would really be a kick in the balls to have you internet drop and then be unable to play for two hours. Also penalizing the player would just hurt the team they are on as a whole.

NO. Here’s the best way to fix leavers. The current system is close to how it should be by not allowing the “leaver” to enter another MP match or even do Story (that was smart GBX).
- If the “leaver” (they could have had internet issues or something else happened, w/e) 3min+/- time to reconnect. If the player does not reconnect they are dropped from the match and matchmaking finds a replacement (new) player. The “leaver” should not be able to enter another MP match or Story mode until the game they left is over.
- The replacement (new) player that comes into the match should auto get bonus credits upon completion (win or loss) for joining a match in progress
-IDLE players need something similar to happen if idle too long (3-5min+/-)
