While I was playing a PvP match with a melee character I thought about if there was a way to have a third-person mode in PvP without affecting too much of the devs idea of having it in first person, or making it unbalanced, or even splitting up the first- and third-person players. So I was thinking if it would be a good idea to implement something that gives you a third-person view of your character for maybe 3-4 seconds and has a cooldown for about 30 seconds or more.
This would be really nice to have when you come into close combat with enemy players since it can be easy to become disoriented when you fight while you’re in each other’s faces. The time limit and cooldown is there to prevent any abuse of the third-person view.
To be clear, this would be a global ability that any player can use and would not be an item or something. Kind of like how we are able to recall to base anywhere and anytime, but with a cooldown and time limit. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy the first person aspect of the game and I think it’s great but having the ability to see in third person in short periods of time every now and then would, in my opinion, greatly enhance the gameplay experience.
I think there should be a 3rd person option period. It would make melee characters lives 100x easier and less tedious and PvE would be less frustrating when you manage to accidentally back up into a horde of enemies or fall off a cliff.
Just make it a simple button that provides and over the shoulder view, but not enough to see behind you much because that would make melee characters have an even worse time.
I can agree on the toggle between 1st and 3rd person in PvE. But then it has to be in PvE only, and a temporary view in 3rd person when playing PvP. Because playing in 1st and 3rd person is a big difference and it wouldn’t work to have one player in 1st person and another one in 3rd when playing PvP
I like your idea . A temporary third person view is nice balance, It can be called “temporary enhanced senses” … and has 45 second cool down and last for 5 seconds.
So you don’t think it is disorienting to play with a melee character in PvP right now?
I think it can be really annoying to play as a melee character in this game since your screen is always filled with all kinds of effects in every fight. So I think there should be something in this game that can make that a bit more bearable.
Yeah that sounds good right? So that cooldown limits you to only being able to use it once every teamfight or something. I hope this suggestion gets noticed somehow. Because this doesn’t seem like a big game changer, just makes fights in close combat more enjoyable.
I disagree the game was designed to be first person. Adding a 3rd person view under any circumstances is an unfair advantage that is why it is extremely limited in Battleborn.
I doesn’t seem to me like it can be an unfair advantage since it’s an ability that every character can use anywhere and anytime. And it’s for a short limited time (3-5 seconds) with a fairly long cooldown to prevent any abuse of the third-person view.
Someone also suggested that if you use the third-person view you will be highlighted for the whole enemy team during those couple of seconds you’re in 3rd person.
In this type of game with assassins its just unrealistic, as a melee character you are shooting yourself in the leg by asking for 3rd person, even for a few seconds. And I will list a few reasons why:
Characters like Toby, Marquis, and Thorn would be untouchable. Give me third person with Toby every 45 seconds, my shield, and my mine, and no melee character will ever touch me. Same goes with the other 2. I can see when a melee character is trying to get a high damage assassination on me. There are just too many ways to exploit a third person, especially in PVP. Adding a third person mode creates an entire new meta than what the game developers originally intended.
And a highlight feature? If you are playing against a team with at least 2 competent players you will die in record time.
This is maybe the 5th thread I’ve seen about this, and its not gonna happen folks. At least not in PVP, and it shouldn’t happen.
An action skill to change between 1st and 3rd person view? That’s just ludicrous. I 'd personally keep the CD when close to corners to peek on what’s ahead. The game was designed to be a 1st person game and it works well, because…
I don’t think it’s disorienting to play with a melee character at all. I 've played a lot of matches with Rath and I am currently maining Phoebe. I have also played Orendi, Oscar Mike, Shayne, Ambra and Thorn and my favorite character among all of them is Phoebe. If you know how to play her, it’s easy to skyrocket your K/D ratio. Same with Rath. Spin to Win, GG to you, QQ to your enemies. I have even managed to hit a 23+/8 with Phoebe just a couple of hours ago. It’s not disorienting at all, even though, you are teleporting half of the time.
Okay I can understand that. But how a bout a indicator of where the enemy is when in close combat?
So what I mean is, your first hit with a melee attack (and this applies to all characters, not only those who has melee as a standard attack) marks the enemy for about 2-3 seconds. If the target then gets out of your field of view, and is still marked, you get an arrow on your screen indicating where they are. And then add in something to prevent players from being marked all the time and keeping other players from marking enemies 24/7. Maybe that only one enemy can be marked at a time and that this only happens like once every 30 seconds or something. Or maybe once every x amount of hits.
Could this work? Then it stays in 1st person and close combat is more manageable.
I can’t disagree that it’s easy to get kills as a melee character. I play Phoebe or Kelvin if I decide to go melee and from what I can remember, my K/D is always in the positive. It’s easy to get kills since the damage output seems to be pretty high for melee characters. But a majority of the time it feels like it’s also easy because the enemy player I’m attacking have no clue of where I am and it’s so many effects and bright colors in this game that it can be hard to stay in focus and figure out where the threat is coming from in time.
I wrote another idea that doesn’t involve a third-person view as a reply to Woyb. Maybe that is a better solution to prevent people from becoming disoriented in this game.
Yeah Im fine with a targeting ability. Marquis has one for his shots so its not out of the realm of possibility. I can definitely understand how it can get hectic during the heat of battle.
Have you tried clicking down on your right analog stick? This puts a little yellow arrow over their head that makes minions target them (I think) and you could use that as a targeting tool possibly.
I agree, the FOV is small enough as is, and with Kelvin, they include his teeth, making it even more disorienting. I’ve shyed away from playing as melee characters for 2 reasons: 1. I suck and 2. Even if I wanted to try them it’s hard to keep track of what you’re doing. More than once I’ve gone in with a melee character to try and take down some enemies, and by the time my screen is clear of explosions and whatever else is going on, I need a second to find out which side I’m on and which way I should run back to. Maybe that’s because of reason #1, but perhaps a wider FOV or a temporary 3rd person mode would make it a little easier to pick up a melee character
I don’t get it. I just don’t get why this third-person argument is coming up over and over again. It is a first-person game. It is designed and advertised as a first-person game. It is not disorienting to play as melee. All you have to do, I repeat: ALL THAT YOU HAVE TO DO is pick the target with the highest likelihood of dying and stick to it like glue until it does die. I consistently rack up 15 kills or higher as Rath or Phoebe every match I play as them. Just watch your target. It is honestly that easy.
It keeps coming up by console players because it’s a pain in the arse to keep track of someone jumping around when you’re in melee due to the narrow FOV and framerate on consoles. If it was as easy as just picking a target and sticking to it, then you wouldn’t see this suggestion constantly brought up. I bet even when reviews come up, the console version of the game is going to lose points from a good portion of reviewers due to the narrow FOV and somewhat disorienting melee experience when combining that narrow FOV with the 30fps cap and lack of a 180 degree quick-turn option.
The first thing Gearbox needs to do, as I stated in other threads, is implement a 180 degree quick turn button. That will go a long way to improving the experience. The best thing to do would be to improve the FOV on consoles, even if it means sacrificing on the graphical side and reducing effects.
I play on PS4, and the framerate doesn’t bother me at all. Cranked my sensitivity up to 8, and just follow a target.
I can see how some would benefit from a 180 degree turn, and I see no harm in implementing something like that (as long as it remains in the first-person). I personally will likely never use such a feature, because I find 180 turn mechanics in other games to be disorienting.
