The Coronavirus/COVID-19 Thread

I’d read the worries about cytokine storms, but that’s a new one. I don’t know if it’s more concerning or encouraging though, given it could result in better treatment if so.

Regardless, I will say I’ve been watching US death numbers and comparing them to the same day in the previous week, and it’s beginning to look like we might be seeing a slight increase in them given the last three days all had more deaths than the same three days last week. We’ll see, could be nothing, most models aren’t expecting an increase this soon.

Well, this is going to throw several cats into a very large flock of pigeons:

Still working through the details on that. This is going to take a while to sort out.

And what the heck is “a certified lean six sigma master black belt” supposed to be? I know what 5 sigma is, and I’ve heard of 6 sigma, but those have nothing to do with any martial arts. The more I read, the more the whole thing stinks.

Edit: A bit more technical detail in this coverage

My worry here is this may encourage more people to take it. While the previous work on the matter was nowhere near conclusive, it was by and large against it. Nonetheless, rather disgusted by the idiots who did this. Scams during a crisis, really?

Some members of humanity can be so sinister, they can make a biblical demon blush.

Fear can be very easy to manipulate to ones advantage.

I guess that’s called a business opportunity :man_facepalming:

At least the demons are honest about it and:

Well, some of the models have updated. In a single day we’ve gone from one model predicting a precipitous rise in cases this month to three. On the plus side, we should know if they’re right (relatively) soon since they’re expecting it to be clear by the middle of the month.

Is… Is that for real? This guy’s out there in his skivvies even when it’s below freezing and blowing a gale?

Yes. He is very real, and even ran for mayor 11 years ago.

That would have been interesting. Well, I’m not sure about his sanity, but you have to admire his dedication.

I’ve praised Dr. Bonnie Henry before and had linked an article about her, but it seems her fame has reached the NYT

That’s pretty neat, and so is the fact that she wears Fluevogs.

As a complete aside : the first shoes I ever bought with my own money was a pair of Doc Martens that were designed by John Fluevog, before he opened up his own shop.

This is a very good, concise article about the state of research on CV. It’s from a local periodical but doesn’t spend much time on local conditions (since there are no cases on the island at the moment).

Damn virus. Our industry were hit real bad. 1st is 2 months lockdown, next is force leave, now they are asking for 15% pay cut. Hope won’t end in retrenchment. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::sweat::cry:

I’ve continued working this whole time, thankfully - others at work have been off for 3 months now (although Canada has a special fund for this). However I’ve been working for a lot less than 15%. It’s been very disheartening.

Seriously? That is beyond broken. If anything, you should be getting more for continuing to show up and work in an environment where you have to engage with customers who may or may not be carrying the virus.

Is that even legal in BC?

Big concern in the long run too, it’s unusual how this recession has caused pay cuts, and may have serious consequences both for inequality and the recovery.

My wage is partly tied to department gross which is pretty standard for the auto trade. March’s revenue was at about 40% of average - they actually had to bump up my paycheque so I could actually make…something.

Still, for the work those of us that have been active have done to keep the business afloat, I’ve impressed on the upper management that I’m not impressed.

Ah, so kind of like pooled tips in a restaurant - except that’s your only source of income. Well, that really sucks.

So, is this going to spawn a bunch of ‘How millennials destroyed New York’ memes?

(Emphasis added).

Sheesh…

It’s insane to think how many people I see disregarding the advice of professionals. I just went to the pharmacy and saw people taking their masks off and saw several people on line scolding others for not social distancing. It’s as if there’s a bunch of people that think the pandemic has been cancelled. It’s almost like some folks will need “stupidity and obstinacy” listed as secondary CODs on their death certificates.
