The Flak over Fl4k and what it cost

I dont mean actually die on poor choice of words. It just seems like a silly way to go about this. Basically a my way or the highway sorta deal. My thoughts on it as a non gender are that you guys are just dividing us more. He/she have been be in colloquial use since the dawn of language and even been structured around those pronouns. I mean if I got upset everytime someone called me she, I think I’d be in an early grave. And what’s worse fl4k isnt even a human like me. If they wanted to make this statement, why not use a human? I feel people would understand better.

Edit: And no “he/she” is not hate speech as much as my NBs want it to be. Sorry. If we start acting like this were just gonna make things worse.

I would like to see a poll for this actually.:wink:

Why did you write a long piece on something I said I already know??? I know how forums work. So…

Again I’m allowed to still give my input in discussion.

Being polite would be respecting my views also as long as I don’t attack the others, but I guess since my views don’t align, despite them not being of hate, troll, or a term of derogatory that I’m impolite.

And I’ve been on the gearbox forums before back in BL2 but couldn’t remember my password or email used.

And my frustrations lie in with them threatening to ban. I never said it’s been long and grueling so stop trying to make it something it’s.

And if you have been keeping up I’ve said that I would use they/them as they are a robot. But yes it would be too much to ask, if was a human.

Agreed. Man the drama around this game is insufferable. What’s worse is this is kind of directing people to be offended for no reason other than being offended? What good has this done? And once this is over with no resolution then what? Ban every last person that dares to say he/she?

Nonono. This is a valid line of inquiry. We can drop the racial slur (which you brought up because it was the worst thing you could think of), but the mentality is the same. Some people, when given the opportunity, will absolutely try to provoke a response on anything even if they don’t have a stake in it. You are absolutely, 100% correct, and this world, sad to say, will never be rid of them. Their numbers are mighty, and they keep having little ■■■■■■■ kids to keep their long, sad, bloodline flowing. However, the point of this isn’t to eliminate ■■■■■■■■ or release their numbers, but to police their assholishness while they are here, on the boards that GBX wants to cultivate.

In the short term, it’s absolutely going to be a pain. It already is and I feel for the mods - I’ve seen several internet personalities outright lie about their actions to get a reaction because that’s their goddamn business and business ■■■■■■■ booms when it caters to ■■■■■■■■. In the long term, their biggest, overwhelming weakness is that they get bored and move on to the next thing someone else has created to piss on next.

That time will come. I’ll probably still be here cause lord knows I’ve got no where else to go than to hang with with this salty crew.

Same to you. Because I agree with someone I’m him all of the sudden.

I agree with this. I just think the forum mods could’ve have handled this better. Its antagonistic on both sides. And you walk through molasses trying to argue rather than listen.

Back on topic, you two. @displayer, @christmasbranch, take it to polite pms, please. Or stop. thanks.

yes you do, you guys have to remind everyone of the pronouns. If someone gets offended for some reason it’s not your problem, they can always ignore the comment and go away.

Singular ‘they’ has been in use for years. It’s awkwardness is pretty subjective by this point; I don’t find it so. You realise this argument is trying to throw down a grammatical rule by just citing a different but equally (and equally mildly) constraining grammatical rule?

If you are transgender or non binary and this is the case for you - I don’t know if you are - that’s absolutely fine, and good for you in being secure! But I’m not sure how one can decree others’ feeling on the subject. I don’t think you can tell people that they shouldn’t be hurt or affected by speech, let alone decree whether they actually are or not. One can argue that it doesn’t matter if people are hurt, although I think it does.

From personal experience, it does matter to the transgender people I know whether I call them by the right pronoun. It’s what they want and the respectful thing to do. I remember I got it wrong once, and my friend corrected me; at first I felt slightly offended that I might be being accused of being insensitive, but actually it was just a friendly request and cost me nothing.

It’s not necessarily even a question of being secure. I’m secure in knowing that my name is Hattie. Doesn’t mean I’m cool with people deciding to call me Ursula.

Of course. As stated above, I do not agree with you on some points, but I’d never write or imply that you’re not allowed to state your opinion.

More than it would be polite for you to respect the views of the character’s creator? I consider freedom of the art as valuable and if an artist assigns pronouns to his work then I’ll respect that while posting on the forum.

For me that’s an abstract question of giving a common courtesy. It’s not agreeing to an “agenda” or changing my beliefs for something.

It’s so weird to me that it’s at the top of people’s list. There are so many more important grammatical fights to fight right now. I can’t tell you how much I wish that even a quarter of the ire exuded over this issue was fearsomely directed towards the tyranny of split infinitive bans. Bloody hell I so vengefully hate that rule.

Don’t get her started on ellipses!

My thesis featured 4000 words about a single instance of ellipsis. But it probably is a little off topic for here. :stuck_out_tongue:

Please can we make this about grammar and punctuation? I want to talk about the need for sarc marks and interrobangs on all keyboards.

(Also, out of likes. All you lovely grammar fetishists get my non existent likes right now.)

You know what iirks me? If this is such an issue here alone, in the gearbox safe space, which you are correct in saying the company has the right to moderate how they see fit, how come gearbox themselves put so little effort in to making the character seem gender neutral or ambiguous?

You all state the little symbol like its this huge thing, yet at the same time gearbox went out of there way to give fl4k a distinctly masculine sounding voice, which could have been avoided. Then, he was given a class name using the term master, which is historically a Male pronoun. That’s not up for debate, it’s a fact of the language. Beast tamer would have fit and been ambiguous, Beast trainer would have fit and been ambiguous, hell, many many terms could have been used aptly, BUT they chose to use a male pronoun.

And then there is the fact that you talk about respecting a minority. At it’s core, how respectful do you think it is to make the ONE non-bindary character a robot? Not even human? To me that could just as easily be taken as gearbox taking a stance that being non-binary isn’t even a human trait.

The whole thing is littered with offenses, if you want to take a close look, by gearbox themselves. And yet here you all try and take a very foolish moral high ground that has done nothing but lead to an increase in negative attention for the game, more boycotting, and general distaste by the vast majority of your fan base on every forum imaginable. So if what you are doing is right, how come almost everyone is speaking out against it?

When you think you are right, and almost everyone else tells you you are wrong, perhaps it’s you who needs to change their way of thinking.
