The Game's Storyline

I think a lot of people didn’t “get” or like the episodic, tv-style format. IMO, just a bit more dialogue linking one mission to the next would have helped.

There was barely a story there…the missions felt completely random…and all of them are pretty repetitive…sure the Dialogue was nice but that was about it for positives in story mode…

I think you’re missing the point op is making. There was a fantastic story, but a lot of it isn’t thrown at you via the missions directly

Well what’s most obvious is most of the lore is locked behind lore challenges (especially those pvp only ones), so the average player will be discouraged long before then. While Overwatch threw it all into massively publicized comics and animated shorts.

In complete honesty though, as far as criticism online goes. It seems Gearbox is having trouble escaping the shadow of BL2’s writing. People online are more than eager to trash BB for anything that looks like a meme, social politics, “Badass”, or over the top personalities.

What I don’t understand is that Dark Souls (I know that isn’t the same type of game and it’s one of my favorites games) have all the story and lore hidden in objects descriptions and NPCs dialogues and anyone critics it, but this game do the same plus the lore challenges and all lose their mind.

Edit: I forgot to say that even Dark Souls has objects that can be obtained only doing the PvP covenants and a lot of people doesn’t like the PvP.

The problem with the story is how it’s presented, it gives me Destiny flashbacks, but without the greed. If they ever make a sequel, I expect it’ll be more like Borderlands in gameplay. I apprecieate the experiment they tried with BB’s story mode, but I personally don’t much like the Episodic stuff.

Well, everything from King’s field on just soet of has a dream like quality to it, you just become more coherent as it goes on.

Battleborn is more of a half-hour tv program.
Would anyone have waited til episode 20 of the Flintstones to learn that they were living in the stone age?

Hell if I know, what am I even talking about right now? Spreadsheets is making me loopy, yo.

The episodic stuff is only weird to me how little they actually contribute to the grand scheme of things. If you boil down the storyline stuff to bullet points, you get the entire story of Battleborn simply from the Prologue and Heliophage.

All that stuff with Bliss and Ekkunar never come into play. Background lore mostly.

I realize I’m livin’ in the Stone Age.
No fax no cellular phone age
Pick my teeth with a dinosaur bone age
Liftin’ heavy Boldur’s every day for my wage

Yabba dabba, yabba dabba dabba do now
Yabba dabba, yabba dabba dabba do now
Yabba dabba, yabba dabba dabba do now
Don’t know what it means, but I say it anyhow!

Battleborn could have AMAZING spin offs like metal gear doing revengeance (just praying for a big whiskey tango foxtrot game)

Omg a whiskey foxtrot origin mission would be AMAZING!!! I really hope it’s a thing(the pessimist/realist side of me isn’t holding my breath tho :P)

Haha yeah even an origin mission would be cool, and out right spinoff would blow my mind. I’ll call it
Whiskey
Tango
Foxtrot

How about something along the lines of “Say Mike Again: The Tango Chronicles”? Got a ring to it I thinks

That would be make more sense actually and sounds better, mine was just humor

I would like if such a game was made that it would end around an encounter with oscar mike and him surviving an attack you did solo on mike clones, bringing new meaning to “the mike that lived”

As far as the story goes, the focus of this game is on the characters. To have singular missions focused on singular characters would feel unfulfilling as your favorites are ignored. So they chose a looser storyline so it was able to feel fluid with every character. Could they have made a deeper storyline? Yes. Is that the point of this game? No. It’s to fall in love with the characters wherever they are, fighting each other are not. That’s why playing your favorites repeatedly gives you more to love about them. This game isn’t great at getting everyone’s attentions. It’s good at getting some completely obsessed.

I totally agree with the OP. The story here is pretty deep, it’s just not thrown at you as a whole, you have to dig it out by yourself piece by piece. While it’s definitely a matter of taste whether you like it or not, but many people seem to not even understand that concept…

I LIKE this game. I love the characters, their dialogue, etc. My hat’s off to the design work from soup to nuts on the characters, voice actors, etc.

BUT.

I’ve felt like you could jumble all of the PvE missions (exception of Helio of course) into a random order and still get the same sense of the “story.”

The Story: Last star, Rendain badguy, pew pew, Ghalt and Deande are your bosses, Kleese crazy, ISIC psycho.

Missions like Renegade are cool because you “meet” Caldarius, but…you know…other than being cute, who the hell is Toby?

Hopefully, as others have suggested, more PvE content will tell the story of all of the other BBs.

I have actually seen Overwatch get flak about a lack of story. I think the biggest difference is OW is all MP whereas BB actually has a campaign in the form of “story missions.” If you’re going to call them that, there should be a story. I think that’s the expectation and I think we can all agree that the story mission story is pretty weak.
