The hot new update thread

There are a lot of interesting ideas here, and they deserve to be fleshed out some for discussion I think. But, perhaps on another thread.

Agreed, this is about the update, not possible ideas for mods ^^.

I’m waiting for the right time for a ā€œwhat you would like to see in Homeworld 3ā€ thread.

I’m doing a Wing Commander mod, and Wing Commander is the Pacific War in space, period. The old games were all about brave human carrier pilots fighting against fleets of vicious aliens from an imperialistic honour-based civilization, doing tense torpedo runs in the middle of big battles, trying to keep in the right trajectory to get the torpedo lock, firing at the last moment to ensure a hit, and so on.

Homeworld 2/Remastered is a wonderful, wonderful engine for that, and since I have some working ammunition and fuel elements, it makes the whole thing feel like the old games and their novels. Sure, it would be easier for me if these functions were implemented already, but the flexibility of HWR and the existing modding community make it the ideal engine to mod on, bar none. That’s why I’m not complaining or anything here. I’ve got tools, contacts and soon enough, time, to make things work and realize a decade-old dream.

In my (imaginary) version of a HW Supply, it doesn’t have to be related to 4x, or boring management and it still is a RTS.

The secret is to mix the waiting for things to get ready (builds and research) with real action: you call it, it is coming and you have to get out of your base if you wanna get it/keep it/ save it. If you don’t have a fleet to defend your convoys, stop calling them. Supply can be about populating the map with ships and events you don’t control and you have to decide and take action. When they arrive, you get what you’ve asked and improve your fleet. For me, it’s more about targets.

About FUEL, I like the idea, but I think it will stay in the mod level.

that thread could be a long ways away. There is a mods idea thread already in existence isn’t there? Why not flesh homeworld 3 ideas out there as mods for homeworld 2? if that makes any sense.

I thought the creation of this thread was to lead away from the old one riddled with tangents. To only focus on the patch?

This isn’t going well

D-4 ! OH MY GWAAAAD ! :grinning:

D-4? Is there an actual hard date for the patch that I missed?

Update and no teasing at all

I’m soooo looking forward to that date now  really excited to read the patchlog ^^.

I’m both looking forward to it and terrified by it, because when I’ll get my hands on that, there will be a humongous amount of work to do. ^^

Very nice.

I’m also curious if the new patch is going to bring significant changes to the campaign, namely the HW1 one. Was there a need to change/rebalance some missions, does the AI use the new formations (especially ones that combine capital ships and fighters), is there still ā€œlevel scalingā€?

There will almost certainly be enemy scaling. Whether it is the same as before I cannot say

A technical question for @BitVenom:

If I remember correctly, you said a few months ago that one of the limitations for mods was the 32 bit nature of the game, which made bad things happen when the memory consumption went over 2GB due to large models, textures or whatever, thus a friendly suggestion to keep the art useable and not copy the entire Louvre on each ship with 64K textures. However, I got an intriguing comment on Steam, suggesting that it would be possible, from the client’s side, to make the executable of the game something called ā€œLarge Address Awareā€, and when I googled it, it looked like it would solve that particular issue. To be clear, I am not asking for any patching or feature or anything, nor for any official endorsement of such action, but just for an opinion from someone who actually knows what he is talking about. That said, do you think that if two players made their local excutable LAA (if that makes any sense), would it improve the stability of a multiplayer game for a mod with large-ish textures?

Thanks!

I already mentioned LAA to BitVenom in another thread and he said it would screw up the game badly if applied.

OK, thanks for the info. I supposed something like that would happen or it would have been suggested as a solution already.

No problem  it sure would have been a simple solution, works great for some other games like Mass Effect with HD texture mods but sadly not in this case  unless the patch makes it possible to use, but that would be up to BitVenom to tell us.
