The Legend of Slif_One and Benedict

@blainebrossart1

Admittedly, Slif’s skill level is higher than the average player, but I think the point he was trying to make is how (relatively) easy it is for almost anyone to pick up Benny and do well to very well with him.

EDIT: Possibly too well…

I really wished the private match we had going worked out better. I was very interested in a bene duel with him

Yeah I wish I had gotten in on that earlier!

It all just spontaneously fell apart after that first match I was in with you guys…

Wish I had realized they could stack characters. The opposing team caught me off guard lol

I’ll get in from the start next weekend and stir up some interest in advance if I know in advance when you’ll be doing them!

Very high skill cap characters that had counters and required great effort to learn how to use against a coordinated team.

Well it has to be early sfternoon west coast and just before evening east coast for me. I work the weekends

The Benedict in me likes that someone is WRECKING as Benedict…
The Breaking Character in me has mixed feelings about someone intentionally playing a character for a special event meant to draw in newcomers or keep the game interesting for those who might be getting bored with the sole intention of dominating everyone regardless of skill level, even if he was trying to make a statement/was trying to demonstrate a valid point. (Especially when the popular opinion is that the game is a failure, and the player base is frighteningly low on PC.)

@Benedict_87

That was exactly where I started to have moral quandaries about the whole situation also…

@Benedict_87

Alternately, though, what did Gearbox THINK was going to happen?

Okay I can see that. I thought you meant in damage potential and I was like “Have you seen a level 6 Dragon!?!” False alarm, sorry and thanks

Well if it makes you feel better I have been doing pretty good with bene. About a 2.5kd with him so far and I took him rarely into duck hunt.

Also I keep meaning to mention this: whenever you go breaking character… I imagine you turning from Benedict into a simple human like some sort of anime transformation :smiley:

I questioned it immediately, because while I got the logic behind what he was doing, the same can be said of criminals, and the PS4 playerbase CLEARLY does not need any discouragement

Well ok maybe I should be more clear.

We weren’t trolling, we weren’t taunting, we weren’t griefing, we werent toying with people or purposely drawing out matches.

Slif was just playing as hard as he could with a character he had barely used.

@epicender584 @Benedict_87

I played with him for a few matches and, although I like the guy, I will admit his goal was just to drive people out of the queue. He may not have realized he may have driven them out of more than the queue. And I remember a handful of matches that were drawn out, but I’m dismissing those as you had lore you needed your ult to do, so I’d prefer to defer

You’re not wrong.

I guess sometimes we did draw a few games out, even after we had finished getting my mastery of Marquis.

This ties directly in to that “cynical truth about how we play Battleborn” post I made a few weeks ago. I know I’m not a bad person, I’m a nice guy, but sometimes (especially in my weekend sessions when much alcohol is involved), I will do bad things in Pvp.

I like to think I’m never outrageous or egregious about it, though.

At least I don’t taunt, ever.

I hope you guys don’t all think im a big old hypocrite now!

Nah at least I wouldn’t as I already know you well enough by now. And I only taunt in five conditions

  • Mirror match where my opponent wants to eradicate me
  • Pendles that tries to get me when I’m nearly dead and then I turn the tables
  • When an assassin wants to chase me, a support like Miko, down and I win
  • When someone chases me back to second sentry or base and dies
  • When I have the Tea Ceremony equipped and kill Deande. It’s canonical ya know

Slif refused to play his beloved Deande because she became OP so he turned to an even darker timeline.

As Toby says when he kills another Toby:

“Darkest future! DARKEST FUTURE!”

I’m not convinced that it’s a Good Thing to avoid certain characters out of respect for new players, even though I totally respect the intention behind it. I’m not very good at playing Battleborn and don’t like being steamrolled, but I don’t necessarily want people to go easy on me or make gameplay decisions to accommodate my relative weakness. I want my performance to be real!

It’s no secret matchmaking isn’t great so I see no shame in being fairly beaten according to the full state of the game right now. I do think it’s great when players choose to be respectful to new people, and to use to opportunity to try different characters when they think the game will be easier. But balance is Gearbox’s burden - I don’t want it to be an extra one on players!
